Grand Theft Auto IV broke records in its debut week in the UK, with sales watchers Chart Track calling the "biggest All Formats" number one title ever, with 926,000 units solid in just five days on sale. On day one, Chart Track estimates over 630,000 copies sold. It replaces Wii Fit as the best-selling title in the UK.
According to further details from GamesIndustry.biz, 514,000 of those copies were of the Xbox 360 variety, 413,000 copies for the PlayStation 3, with hardware sales up for both consoles at about the same ratio. We should have Canadian and U.S. GTA IV sales data soon, courtesy of the NPD group, for maximum press release boasting material. We can't wait!

Wow, despite more PS3s in Europe, atleast in the UK GTA sold 100,000 more on the 360? What's the deal?
I'm going to stop reading these sales numbers posts, I just don't care
@CreamSodaSlurpee:
Either because the X360 version has DLC or more people bought a PS3 for MGS4/other games.
@CreamSodaSlurpee:
It's 2:1 in the UK for the 360 over the PS3. Sony has about a million or so and MS has 2 million plus.
@CreamSodaSlurpee:The PS3 only outsold the 360 in Europe as a whole; 360 still leads in the UK.
I'm still seriously doubting the 2:1 GTA IV sales ratio MS are claiming for N.America.
These UK numbers (55% vs 45%) fall pretty damn close to those shown by Amazon.com sales. NPD is going to be an interesting time.
I honestly felt the DLC would push the 360 to a much higher percentage but I'm guessing the PS3 just has a higher attach rate for GTA IV.
I also think the question of which version would you pick actually affects a tiny percentage of the userbase.
@CreamSodaSlurpee: Maybe they had more 360 copies than ps3? I dont know, only thing i know is that all ps3 pre orders were taken well before day 1 everywhere .So i went to a retail store which doesnt do pre orders 20 minutes after it opened and the guy said they had sold out in those 20 minutes.The guy got on his pc and said that another store in their chain nearby had a few left.So i ran over and bought it.
Funny enough as i went on shopping for the rest of the morning and i passed other people now and then on their phones over hearing them say "yeah its sold out, there`s none left etc". I figured GTA IV is what they were talking about.
@CreamSodaSlurpee: 360 owners live for FPS and GTA
You know why I like this report? The numbers are fantastic overall but neither dominated or underperformed enough for fanboys of either console to claim victory or belittle the other.

... oh, who am I kidding. A meteor the size of Australia heading to the Earth wouldn't stop fanboys from arguing anything. *sigh*
@DARTH_TIGRIS: Is the "Call of Fanboyism" the new "First"?
It's not like you need to search hard to find them, but hitting up an 8 comment post with none in it is a little desperate.
@Knight-Zero:
Who doesn't like FPS and GTA? I think that's what these numbers are showing. :)
@Jelster:
It's called a pre-emptive strike. Calling them out before they speak may save this page from their taint.
@DARTH_TIGRIS:
Don't you need to be bombing Iran or something? LOL, premptive strike, yeah because that works, fanboys being the voice of logic and all.
As I said. This is the new "First". Meme be gone!
@CreamSodaSlurpee:
UK =/= Europe, Xbox360's install base is much larger in UK.
@DARTH_TIGRIS:
that was funny! very very funny! but yeah...fanboys are hard to stopped!!
Anyway you shake this it's a major win for Microsoft. It's like HALO 4 going multi-platform and selling more on the PS3.
Look at that, a joint Europe/US release with some pretty damn healthy UK sales! Well with a population of six times the UK's I'd expect GTA4 to sell six times more in the US. If it sells any less than that then I hope companies look at this and reconsider Europe as a market, because Britain alone seems to buy more that it's fair share of games when compared to the rest of Europe. (I'm still pissed about Brawl).
