PlayStation owners around the world were treated to a Blu-ray Disc Profile 2.0 update in firmware 2.20, which enabled the special features of BD-Live titles on the PlayStation 3, but outside of the U.S. that really didn't mean much...until now. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment have found a way to make you buy Men in Black again as they announce the Will Smith / Tommy Lee Jones sci-fi classic (is it too early?) as the first BD-Live release for the international market.
"SPHE is delighted to bring BD-Live to International markets for the first time," stated Matt Brown, EVP, International, SPHE, "This follows a successful launch in the US in March and is just the start of the exciting possibilities that will soon be available on high definition Blu-ray Disc."Interactive features include a BD-Live multiplayer interactive trivia game and exclusive downloadable theatrical previews. Finally, interactive trivia on Blu-ray. Hopefully they'll be kicking things up a notch with future interactive releases. Men in Black the You Might As Well Buy It Again On Blu-ray version will be out June 17th.
PlayStation Day '08 Men In Black To Be First Blu-ray Title With BD-Live For International MarketLondon, (06/05/08) - Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (SPHE) announced today that it will launch its first BD-Live enabled Blu-ray title outside the US market, with the release of Men In Black in selected international territories* beginning 16th June 2008.
This release follows the recent Blu-ray Disc Profile 2.0 software update for PLAYSTATION®3 (Version 2.20), which made the PS3™ the first Profile 2.0 Blu-ray player available on the market.
Blockbuster hit Men In Black will bring network connected features to international territories for the first time. These features include a BD-Live multi-player Interactive Trivia Game, as well as exclusive downloadable theatrical and home entertainment previews and a FAQ about BD-Live functionality.
Men in Black follows the exploits of agents Kay (Tommy Lee Jones) and Jay (Will Smith), members of a top-secret organization established to monitor alien activity on Earth. The two MiB find themselves in the middle of the deadly plot by an intergalactic terrorist (Vincent D'Onofrio) who has arrived on Earth to assassinate two ambassadors from opposing galaxies."SPHE is delighted to bring BD-Live to International markets for the first time," stated Matt Brown, EVP, International, SPHE, "This follows a successful launch in the US in March and is just the start of the exciting possibilities that will soon be available on high definition Blu-ray Disc."
BD-Live allows consumers to experience a variety of network connected options. In addition to exclusive content, BD-Live titles can enable an exciting slate of next generation possibilities, such as ring tones/wallpaper downloads, peer to peer interactions, live events and gaming activities.
BD-Live titles are compatible with the latest Profile 2.0 BD players. These models also support Blu-ray's "Bonus View" picture-in-picture feature that was available on previous Profile 1.1 BD players.

Finally, I can be annoyed by trivia prompts in high definition.
Excellent! Now even films will come with bloatware!
...Why?
It's like a movie game, except it'll actually be good. :D
"Blu is the new black"
Oooh, that's going to raise some eyebrows I'm sure...
But the question now is...will anyone even care for the extra features? I am a hd-dvd fanboy turned blu owner and I just watch the movies. I never cared for hd-dvds supposed "unique" extras and nor will I care about blu-rays.
Also, who even cares about Men in Black trivia?
I'd pay extra for movie editions that included no special features, no commentary, and no menus. Put in the disc, the movie starts. That's what I want.
@elementary:
Buy the film and then download it :p
Those naughty uploaders don't bother with all the menus.
@elementary: I remember when I got my first DVD long ago, that's just how it was. I popped in the disc and it started right up - not even a preview! I thought it was absolutely glorious, but as time passed, the DVDs became more and more like VHS tapes, packed with previews and nonsense at the beginning. Some DVDs nowadays you can't even skip this crap! Granted, the one thing I always watch on the special features section is the gag reel. Good stuff. Most of the time.
Disney is by far the worst for previews... they bombard you over and over with trailers for upcoming films, or films on dvd going into the "vault" soon etc...
I just want a movie you pop in and are done with... The only extras ive ever cared for are deleted scenes/bloopers. I cant even stand the piracy warnings anymore.
Quoting Tracy Morgan from SNL:
Blu may be the new black...but black is the new president B***H
You know what the difference between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD is? Blu-Ray makes this look GOOD.
I'd say it's too early to call it a "classic", but it was a pretty good popcorn-type flick. I still haven't seen the second one yet :\ .
I agree though, all we need is bloatware in our movies now too. After seeing the articles about the possibilities of putting commercials mid-disc (I would assume similiar to how TV stations do when you watch shows online), i'm beginning to think the world is getting interactive and online enough. And i'm as tech geek/IT guy as anyone.
@will:
I've ripped DVDs to be playable on my ipod, and I've found that when I want to rewatch those movies I prefer to just hook up the ipod to the TV and watch in poor resolution rather than deal with the hassle of bloated DVDs.
When can I have multi-terrabyte AppleTV-like set top box? I'm ready to rip my entire movie collection to a hard drive and ditch the discs.
Wow...now I'm impressed........
Gee..hope they do the same thing with other "classics" like Epic Movie or Meet The Spartans.
Is it me or does this seem really stupid and pointless? Who really wants to play a MiB trivia game rather than just watch the movie? All this extra crap on these discs is just that, crap.
@Madness: Trivia: Did you know the aliens in MIB weren't actually CG characters, but were animatronic puppets made by stapling together thousands of Q-Tips? And Tommy Lee Jones wasn't even human! The producers of the movie took a really, really old, sallow catcher's mitt and put it over the end of a broom stick, and had a marionette artist move him around the soundstage!
It's gems like this you'll be missing out on.
the crap wont sell, they need to do something.

but not sure if this is it guys
Okay, for the first time I've finally found some useful feature in this whole Blu-Ray internet connected stuff. They can now actually see how many people use these features! So, when they see that less than 0.0001% of all buyers use this crap then maybe we can go back to just a movie on a god damn disc! At least in the 80's and 90's we could press a button and shit would fast-forward to the movie. So much for technological improvement.
What the hell. What a waste of time and money, I honestly see no point in this, I would of had enough of the film after watching let alone download "New Content" and play online trivia games? Like 1 in every 1,000 people who buy this would try this stuff.
From what I recall of the first MIB DVD, its commentary mode was actually pretty dang neat, done with football play-style drawings directly on the screen and Mystery Science Theater-style silhouettes on the bottom rather than purely audio. I don't know of any other movie that has something like that.
...and can anyone imagine how much fun it will be to try to play one of these exciting online trivia games only to find out that there is nobody online to play against? That's it, I'm going out to buy a blu-ray player right now.
And to think, we killed HD-DVD for this!
(Okay, so HD-DVD had the goofy extras, too. I'm looking at you, Tokyo Drift...)
I know HD is the new fad and all, but here's what I want to know: would people consider the benefits of using higher-capacity media like BR with standard-definition video? Say packing an entire season's worth of a standard-def television show onto one disc, rather than spread across 4-5? Or would they cry and insist everything has to be HD (even if the source material was never presented as such?)
@Zamzoph: Ghostbusters did the MST-style silhouettes...Harold Ramis and Ivan Reitman making fun of Bill Murray the whole way through...
Look, we finally have half of what HD DVD had last year!!! For twice the price!
@cybereality:
I wonder if Sony was saying the same thing during the Betamax days..lol
Isn't "SPHE" an incredibly awful acronym? I can barely say it without spitting.
I agree with some other comments in that, while it's cool, these features are useless to me. I own about 200 DVDs, and 10 Blu Rays, and don't even have time to watch all the movies I want, let alone spend more time on special features.
I like the movie, but those features are very lameass...
Finally, Bluray is about to catch up with HD DVD feature for feature. It might be two years later, but BD did win without those features, hence it's a good bonus.

"A recent study by the NPD Group has shown that Blu-ray sales only increased by 2 percent from February to March and that Blu-ray sales dropped 40 percent from January to February."
I haven't bought Men In Black before, Mike. What makes you think I have? I've never felt the need, really. But after watching I Am Legend and No Country For Old Men, I guess I should think about adding this gem to the library then.
