Samba De Amigo To Get Paid DLC?

Monkey Armour So the Wii can't do DLC, Harmonix & Neversoft? Maybe it can. It just needs to involve monkeys, and a couple of maracas. Pictured at left is the box art for the upcoming Wii version of classic Dreamcast rhythm title Samba De Amigo. If you squint real hard, and look in the top-left corner, you'll see a little red logo. That's the Wii's new "Pay To Play" logo, meaning that (if this isn't some strange Photoshopping mistake) at some stage, you'll be given the opportunity to pay more to play a little more. This being a music title probably means you'll be able to download new tracks/levels/monkeys/sombreros, but die-hards, don't let me stop you from dreaming it'll be a patch to allow Dreamcast maraca use.

  • This is just a total guess here, but it may be a system where you pay for the DLC, and you own it, but you have to download it every time you want to use it, to save space.

Then again, it could just be really, really small DLC, like the Dreamcast and PS2 had in some games.

  • The Wii has shown examples of where content on an SD card can be loaded and played (Brawl custom stages).

I'd like to think that a single song could be loaded from the SD card and played.

I think it would be a mistake only because I'm sure Rockband would have done it if they could. If they can't do it, I wonder how Sega would be successful?

@TRT-X: They're tiny for one thing and the content itself isn't a protected (DRMed) download. I wonder if Nintendo would allow protected DLCs to be downloaded to non-protected media?

  • I hope this means that the Wii will get a Hard Drive soon. With the talk not that long ago from Nintendo saying they know people want one and are looking at ways to make people happy.

So DLC would be great for this game.

  • I'm looking forward to the game myself since I missed it on the Dreamcast. That being said, my fridge is pretty empty, so bring on the DLC.

  • Remember back in Nintendo power the Wii is speculated to have a 20-40GB hard drive?... but what I'm more concerned of if Sega will give us quality tracks and more for the money, and nothing horrible like covers from some pop group.

  • when will this get released? I want.

  • $50 bucks says the content is already on the disc and you pay to unlock it.

  • @okenny :): I don't know. I would supose that samba will have smaller files, as it doesnt have to have data for many instruments and probably not even the quality of the rockband DLC.

Having said that, i put part of the blame on Harmonix for the rockband game on wii being so lackluster. Not much for the DLC, that is certanly a wii limitation with 100mb songs, but the fact that the game as a whole is just a PS2 port, with no online play and apparently not many of the stuff that the "big" versions have.

  • This proves that all the Harmonix nagging about DLC for the Wii was not possible, was just bollocks. After all, they are selling an expansion dvd for $30 a few weeks after the game is released. And the Ps2 get that same dvd.

They blame Nintendo when they are making extra money on expansions they already had ready to go?

  • excite truck loads mp3s directly off of SD cards for in game use. Harmonix's excuse is complete bullshit. As Falsoman notes, the real reason for the 'problems' are harmonix just doing a quick no-change port of the PS2 version. I mean, whats their excuse for no tour, no customization, etc?

  • If I remember correctly the Dreamcast version had Downloadable tracks as well. The problem is that they were probably already on the disc. Just needed a code to unlock. The songs were 2 Blocks on the Dreamcast VMU so thats why i think that way. But they were worth it. Burning Rangers and Nights Theme! WOOT!

Anyways... I just hope the damn controllers work well. Big expectations from this guy *thumbs to the chest*.

  • I really am having high hopes that there will be SOME kind of storage solution unveiled at E3. Iwata hinted at it, I do believe it's coming at some point...but when?

  • The picture has the words "Monkey Armour?"

Oh, I see what you did there.

  • As happy as I am to see this coming out, I have this feeling that it will not capture any of the original appeal. Needing two wiimotes to play kinda sucks already as to play two players I need two more wiimotes and at 40 a pop and no real need for them, I'm hesitant.

  • @gamedismantler: Bingo.

  • Microtransactions.

  • Uh, I'm guessing the data for a Samba track is nowhere near the size of a Rock Band track, for anyone interested in that angle of complaint

@otakujpop: why would you need two Wii Remotes?

  • @otakujpop: two wiimote?

    you certain?

I'm sure you can use the nunchuks as well.

Give people options if you got more them a pair of them.

  • Why would you want to use those maracas, anyway? They were a pain to use with that sensor you had to stand over just so in order for them to register, and I could never get the hang of the posing. Sure, they looked cool, but that doesn't say much for their effectiveness as game controllers.

  • Hmm, DLC for Samba di Amigo..? Why not I guess. I wasn't expecting it with this game, but as long as Sega keeps providing updates then I'll be happy.

  • Well if you have the extra controller it "feels" more like two marachas plus I find the controller to be more sentive to movement then the numbchuck which can also be used. (Plus you get the sound out of both speakers.)

  • @otakujpop: you could get more friends to come to your house... one only friend isn't socially acceptable... try a couple more and then you can buy a couple more controllers!

  • @ThisCharmingMan: Hey, we've got a solution. It's called the SD card slot. NINTENDO: LET US USE IT. Thanks!

Really, this could have all been avoided if all the VC games we purchased, etc. would be tied to some sort of intelligent account system rather than to our consoles from the beginning. Oh well. Maybe next time around.

    @Onizuka-GTO:
Yes, both styles are options. You can either play with two Wii Remotes, or a Wii Remote + Nunchuk.

  • i just got this game yesterday for dreamcast and its incredible. it wont be as fun with the wii-mote though, you NEED maracas for it!

  • I sold my Dreamcast copy knowing it was coming out for the Wii, great game though it is, the maraca controllers for the DC, while great feeling, had terrible accuracy and literally RESETS THE GAME completely if it loses track of the maraca positions, which it does very easily if you move even slightly astray from the sensor strip.

Totally infuriating to suddenly be kicked back to the main menu in the middle of a song because you shook one maraca too far. That being said, this would probably be the only game I would consider buying some controller attachment for....maybe.

  • @russtophiles: I never had a problem with the maraca controllers resetting the system.
navigating the menus was frustrating, because I would find myself going back and forth through the menus accidentally, but never had it reset.
I had the generic "samba fan" controllers, and they worked just fine.

@russtophiles: Second that. I used to hose my friend at Samba until we went to a friend's house (who had maracas) and got destroyed.

I'm gonna go ahead and blame the maracas. Yeah.

  • Almost bought a wii again just for this game.

Ended up getting the Eyetoy version and a pair of Maracas.

I am now living la viva loca.

  • Is it actually called "Pay to Play"? That's a horrible name, If I didn't know anything about games I would probably avoid buying any game that said that on the box.

  • I wonder how much the extra songs(assuming it's that) will cost.

  • hmm... :(
