We shan't be lacking Metroid fan made games any time soon, it seems, as news of Von Richter's take on the adventures of Samus Aran looks to outdo "Project AM2R" in features and function. "SR-388," as it's known, boasts thousand of frames of animation, mini-games, new weapons, new mini-bosses and more, as it's more of a re-imagining than a graphical spit-shine. It looks just super and will hopefully give me, personally, the chance to revisit Planet SR-388 without having to compromise my strict graphics whore principles.

I don't know why, the moonwalk made me laugh.
Compared to the video for the AM2R, this does definitely look more polished. However, the models and animation look like they were ripped right out of Super Metroid, plus some additional animation frames.
I've seen this before, but it never ceases to amaze. I'm even more excited about this than I am about Sonic 2 HD.
This looks great, but I have a bad feeling that Nintendo might seek to shut it down.
That is some serious badassery right there. Even though it is highly reminsicent of Super Metroid that doesnt bother me one bit since I adore that game.
Finally, a Metroid II fan game that doesn't look awful. AM2R is either pure ripped, or very, very, VERY awful "colored" versions of the GB sprites. That don't fit in at all.
So yeah, this looks great.
shit i cannot wait for this
Meh, I think the AM2R looks more fluid and fast-paced. But, we shall see!
This looks like a total Zero Mission redo of M2.
Nintendo, buy them out and fucking make it real. NOW!
A hd wiiware remake by nintendo could be possible, and would sell a lot...
As much as I'd love to see this released as a DS homebrew, I'd MUCH rather play it on the PSP's bigger screen :)
Same with sonic2 HD, I just dont think hi-res visuals were meant to be put on a DS screen.
i worry that nintendo, who have been cashing in heavily on every property with rare exception (mother), will spit out a cease and desist. i fear this because it looks as good as much of what nintendo has put out there.
did anyone else find the fanfare for the box-pushing to be really funny?
"NEW MOVES"
Do want.
This game remake looks awesome. But then again, I still like how the original looks too.
It really makes me wonder why nintendo doesnt hire talent like this.
Then again we never know what goes on in the background after C&Ds take place so.
Looks damned good though and I do hope something positive comes out of it.
Wow.
A lot of fan-made Metroid goodness to look forward to in the future.
It does look a lot like Super Metroid... but is that a bad thing? NO.
It also reminded me of the GBA Metroid games. I think it looked great in a retro way...
*random thought warning*
I was thinking about how Bionic Commando was remade for XBLA, and was thinking they should do a remake of an old Metroid game. But, being a Nintendo property and not a third party, it would never be on the X-Box, it would have to be on the Wii. So I thought, fine, remake the original 8-bit Metroid and put it out for Wii Ware. But then, the original Metroid is already emulated on Virtual Console. So why would they essentially have the same game, twice? So, it will never happen. Bastards. Why couldn't I live in some odd parallel universe where Metroid was made by Capcom or something. But then, if it were made by Capcom, it probably would have been a 2-D fighter and there'd be games like Metroid vs. Marvel or something and since I hate 2-D fighters, I would never have played Metroid. And in that weird parallel universe I would probably be lamenting the fact that there would never be a updated remake of Bubsy or some other crap. So parallel universes suck, too. Damn you Stephen Hawking.
*random stream of consciousness thoughts end*
I would pay real dollars for this, and weep for what the franchise has become.
@Eltigro: They already remade the original Metroid - it's called Zero Mission :P
There should be a warning on this article for those of us who just can't quite handle the composite of awesome that trailer somehow manages to contain within that relative 5"x4" space.
Am I crazy, or is that some kind of alien-Bowser at the end?
I'm only a casual fan of Metroid, so someone feel free to laugh at me and identify it as some common enemy in the series.
Looks great, by the way!
That just blew my mind.
Where do i get this? *drool*
@Vorpal: Metroid II was all about hunting down Metroids on their home planet. They have different stages of evolution. That was probably one of them.
Mmm... I still have my save game at the end of the original.
I would buy this on the VC, or for the DS.
I should say, Wiiware.
@Vorpal: That's an advanced stage Metroid. Gamma if I'm not mistaken. I was disappointed that we didn't get to see a metroid until that very clip at the end :)
Do want.
Color me excited. Metroid was always a personal favorite series and I always felt the Prime series, while good, just didn't have the lustre of the 2D games. This looks absolutely brilliant. My only complaint is that I now feel like I've been wasting time because I was unable to do something this cool.
This looks awesome, whenever I go to the store I am always nostalgic thinking back to the days when Toys R Us had the little flaps with all the SNES games and you would take the ticket to the front and they would get it for you. Games may look awesome now but there is something about games like this that still hooks me.
VON RICHTER
It doesn't look half bad, the other one looked a little less polished, can't say I'm waiting for the either one though. *shrug*
VON RICHTER
I love the sliding on the ice, the water splash, and the icewave beam. I so do want a new 2D Metroid.
This game looks sick!
So uh... when can we expect this to drop, this shit looks BANANAS!!!
don't tell us about this NOW! Nintendo will just fox them. ell us when it is done.
I am completely amazed.
I truly applaud their effort.
This is beautiful.
@Marasai: I wish to totally second that thought. I'm not saying it's to blame, but not letting the cat out of the bag until around the time the games are released does help lower the possibility of "shut downs"
It still pains me whenever I see the video for "Chrono Resurrection"...*sniffles*
@Marasai: Agreed. Publicizing this, at this stage, is essentially saying, "I want to try to get these guys shut down."
Sigh.
@BugJar: You mean a series of beautiful action adventures that feel like the perfect evelution of the 2D metroids (a little light on the jumping, though), or the two amazing GBA games?
@Marasai: @Fortyseven: I like the new title (Not A Metroid II Remake Fan Project).
Now this is what homebrew is all about!
I'm rather worried they might get a C&D soon.
Looks very slick. Can't wait to play this for my SNES. I mean, VC! I mean, PC, right?
If you have to do insane bomb jumping like that to beat the game I'm going to fail hard, I'm horrible at timing those bomb jumps.
Looks awesome though, I hope they don't get shut down... but I don't recall Nintendo having done that before with homebrewed games using their IPs. Now Square... we're all mad at them of course.
Im a graphics whore too.
Nice but I still can't understand why people put so much effort into fangames. With their talent and resources they could make their own IP. That way they risk a shut down by Nintendo :/
A cease and desist, really? Are you people unaware of the masses of fan games that exist out there? There are sites that cater to making Mario and Metroid fan games, and also dont forget that crazy ass Star Fox game remake that Nintendo has claimed to be "fan art" and will not shut it down.
Now, if this were a Final Fantasy fan game, you could expect Square Enix to go "No Country for Old Men" on the developer.
@xerus`: You MUST tell me the name of this remake.
I'd really like for this to get finished and be awesome. They cut a fantastic looking trailer, but with fan projects I'm always skeptical til I'm playing the end result.
Game design and pacing are everything in a Metroid title. Does look good, though.
I squealed like a little girl.
Boost ball, Boost grapple, X-ray visor, push, super missles, lovely animations. Cannot wait.
The new content does not impress, outside of the graphics. NEW MOVES: Crate pushing. Crate. Pushing. Woo. Now we can have shitty block puzzles in metroid. Finally.
@Ghede: You're just scared of someone pushing a crate over on you, you negative jackass.
I still don't understand the rationale for releasing any sort of information about a remake that's not ready to be released yet. All it's going to do is attract Nintendo's attention and cause the project to be canceled.
What these people making remakes/homages/whatever should do is work on the game in private, then just release the completed project on the internet out of the blue.
The graphics are beautiful! Samus looks good, and so do the environments of SR-388! Bravo!
Metroid II re-imagined to look like Super Metroid with extra features, and Metroid II remade to look like Metroid Fusion.
Double your pleasure, double your fun!
That's oretty danm nice. Good wirk.
Nintendo should really pay attention to this, it looks like a prequel to the excellent metroid 3
AM2R uses the game engine from Zero Mission while this one uses the Superior (but still not my favorite) Super Metroid engine.
Some Fusion love, anyone?
Man. I hope this gets out. Damn Nintendo for cancelling the 2d metroid for DS.
Sweet Mother Brain! I knew I bought that USB SNES controller for a reason!
Wow... kudos for the people doing this.
I just can't understand the fandom level you gotta have to dedicate this much time for it. Even if it is Metroid and all.
Makes me regain some faith in humanity...
