When 15-year-old Olivier Baptiste refused to hand over the video game he was playing to his 18-year-old friend William Suarez, Suarez pulled out a .32-caliber Smith and Wesson from his waistband and shot Baptiste in the head. This according to police, who have charged the alleged killer with manslaughter, illegal possession of a firearm, assault with a dangerous weapon, and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling.
Witnesses told authorities that Suarez then put the gun down on the kitchen counter and began saying, "This just didn't happen," according to court documents.Sounds like one seriously screwed-up individual right there.
This is similar to the incident back in July, where a young boy stabbed his older brother to death for not letting him have his turn at a video game, in both situation and press reaction. Some of the headlines I have seen include:
Family: Game led to teen's murder - BostonHerald.com
Video game linked to fatal shooting in Brockton - The Patriot Ledger
Just don't be surprised if the major news outlets pick this up with accompanying inflammatory anti-video gaming headline.
Video game linked to fatal shooting of 15-year-old [Wicked Local Brockton]

Comments
typo shot instead of show :)
Zap 'im.
I hate when people "show me in the head"!
The press will somehow find a way to blame the video game industry.
Oh is "show Baptiste" supposed to be "shot"?
shot, not *show*
Anyone from this area (MA) should know it has nothing to do with video games, it's just fucking Brockton.
we don't go to raven--err..brockton...
Wow, that some anger management issues right there...
God damn are the media going to have a frenzy with this one...
I actualy would like to know what game it was... I mean talk about a having a hard on.
One messed up kid for sure...
"This according to police, who have charged the alleged killer with manslaughter, illegal possession of a firearm, assault with a dangerous weapon, and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling."
So how many years is this? Seems like at least 80.
One: "Just don't be surprised if the major news outlets pick this up with accompanying inflammatory anti-video gaming headline."
I'm already waiting for it.
Two: "When 15-year-old Olivier Baptiste refused to hand over the video game he was playing to his 18-year-old friend William Suarez, Suarez pulled out a .32-caliber Smith and Wesson from his waistband and show Baptiste in the head."
Error.
Three: But damn... Did this have to happen during closing arguments of John Bruce's Case? Damn it.
@FACEMACHINE:
Very true.
Yeah Brockton SUCKS ass@FACEMACHINE:
Oh man, we sure don't need this. It's not game's fault there are some messed up people out there. By the way, what the hell is a gun doing in your waistband. That should be the the story right there.
From the article it seems the victim is just as much to blame here as the other guy. It said they had been brandishing the gun at each other for weeks.
Obviously it was only a matter of time before one of them got dumb enough to use it.
Yeah... because it's actually video games that provided a freaking gun to a 15 year old kid!
Stupid media
The cause of this murder was just one seriously mentally disturbed kid. Not video games. But that's not good enough for the media. If a violent video game is found within 10 miles of a murder, then it's always the video game's fault. No way could an already messed up kid just be attracted to violent video games. The violent video games corrupted him.
@Mokona: 18... whatever.
Well it can't have been any game from this gen, seeing as co-op shooters are the soup du jour. And if it was a last gen game, surely the dude could've afforded to buy it if he can afford a revolver like that!
Why do these people have guns?
WHY?
I seriously can't begin to comprehend the kind of thinking that would cause a person to do something like this. It's as baffling as it is horrifying.
Well, at least they didn't mention what video game the fight was over.
However, that's one messed up individual. I'm surprised to see him only being charged with manslaughter, but then again my knowledge of the legal system is pitiful at best.
that is just plain horrible. This could have been over a soda or bike seeing as the guy didn't hesitate to shoot the kid over a game but the game will obviously be blamed.
You know, by the time you shoot me in the head, i don't really care if you shot me near my house or not.
Also, here's an idea; Let's not let stupid kids (because kids are stupid as a general rule) have firearms readily available.
Remember, guns don't kill people. Video games do.
I guess I'll get this out of the way:
PWNED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Let the grieving process began.
@AnthraxJunkie:
Since it was Brockton, it's probably nothing recent. Very low income area from my understanding.
I hope they do release the game name, and I seriously hope it's something like "Mary Kate and Ashley Olson: Horse Riding Adventures"
That's terrible. I mean, what video game could honestly be worth killing over? I hope the 18 yr. old gets the maximum sentencing possible for what he's done.
Of course, it's only a matter of time until this gets spun around to entirely blame video games instead of the messed up individual, so I doubt he'll get anything near maximum punishment...
This is really, really sad.
The death just seems so pointless.
Hope the family is holding up well.
We're gonna pay for the rare, but stupid events like this.
Damn anti-video game people. Damn messed up dudes that happen to be near games too.
...began saying, "This just didn't happen,"
That seems to indicate remorse, so either the kid is gaming the system or he has truly learned a lesson in finality. I would wager seeing your friends brains all over your hands and the wall can have a profound effect on you, though not as proufound as that of the victim. Very sad.
I wonder, how many more generations will go by and how many more kids will die before gun control is taken seriously in the United States?
Queue Jack Thompson in 3..2..
WTF, what kind of person does that :o/ Such stupidity with the kids today.
who gives a shi*t bout the game why was that kid able to walk around with a gun in the first place yet again another situation that could have been avoided if their f*cking parents had been more active in their child's life they game pushed him over the edge but what was he doing on the edge in the first place with a loaded firearm?!
@doubtful: Many many many many many more generations.
God dammit! Alright, new rule. If you have to kill somebody, please refrain from playing any video games for at least 48 hours before hand, and from mentioning video games for at least a weak before hand. Seriously, why does this have to happen? At this point, I know that if I had to commit a crime of any sort, one of the things on my mind would be "will anybody be able to link this to video games in any way?"
But this doesn't even make sense. He pulled the trigger twice? And then his friend begged him to stop. So he was definitely set on killing him, and it wasn't some impulse thing. Then he says "this didn't just happen"? You know, I usually feel sorry for the killers in crimes like this. I always consider the fact that they've probably had a harder life than I can imagine, but fuck this guy. What does he mean by "this didn't just happen"? He had his chance. The gun didn't go off the first time; he could have stopped there, but no.
@Doomstink: thats why guns period should be outlawed, gun don't kill people, stupid people with guns kill people, and you can't stop stupid people from getting guns in the u.s., so then get the gun away from people period.
...no witty puns for this. Nothing clever to say.
This is a sad story.
Stupid idiot had to do this when he was 18, right after he can be charged as an adult. Which means that he should be old enough to think for himself and no longer in the impressionable age that makes him easily influenced by outside forces. So either change the laws and make it video games fault every time one is involved or just stfu and charge the bastard like the murdering punk he is.
Geez, another classy bunch of Kotaku comments either making more fuss over a spelling error than a kid getting killed, or making lousy, insensitive jibes in an attempt to come of sounding humourous.
What a sad event. Of all the misery in the world, at least this could have been prevented with tighter gun control...
@Channing: any retard can get a gun in the states
People shoot each other for every conceivable (and not so conceivable) reasons. Over sports feuds, over parking spaces, over loud music. The list goes on. I'm not surprised and I'm not concerned. It's sad. That's all I can honestly say.
I really think the 18 year old is mentally sick. Especially since he was saying "That did not just happen" It is like he has some kind of disconnect, like he didn't know it would happen.
I hope the kid gets treatment and then jail time if he is sick. If not hopefully they will throw him under the jail.
Some fucked up people in the world today.
this really sucks.
my sympathies go out to the victims family.
It's not the guns, it's not the people.. its VIDEOGAMES!!! that kill people! seriously... even if the game was Manhunt 2 or something, it's not the game that killed the kid (unless it grew a pair of arms and legs and went after him with the gun...), its the twat that held the gun... why can't mass media realize that? is common sense something people don't have nowadays?
"Suarez pulled out a .32-caliber Smith and Wesson from his waistband and show Baptiste in the head."
well as long as he showed him the gun first...
I hate people who have IQ's below average... not actual handicapped people, just really dumb people... They make the world a shitty place.
Mad world indeed
Well how funny would it be if they were playing something like Pokemon Snap for N64... I would like to see how the media would react to that! On a more serious note my condolences to the family and I hope that idiot goes to jail for life. No doubt this will be another target at video games, but what do you expect? Sit like this always happens, @Stimpy: "Remember, guns don't kill people. Video games do."
Yeah... such a touchy subject.
WAAAALT
Does anyone wonder why the hell he has a gun in his waistband? And why he's bringing it to a house?
Personally, I think that this might have been premeditated.
Wait... if the guy is 100% sure that did not happen... did it happen? Like, if a tree falls in the woods and noone heard it did it make a sound? hell, if a tree fell in the woods and everyone, but you, heard it... did it make a sound?
