Teen Killed By Brother Over Video Game

actionnews6.jpgA Sunday afternoon of video game goodness turned deadly this past Sunday as a thirteen year-old boy fatally stabbed his sixteen year-old brother in the chest during an alleged dispute over who got next. The younger brother stabbed his sibling in the chest twice, puncturing his heart and a lung. A tragic situation like this could quickly turn into an anti-gaming media circus if handled incorrectly. Luckily Lansdowne has one of the more sensible Police Chiefs.

"I don't believe the actual game itself was the cause of it. I don't believe they were acting out in any way or mimicking anything in a video game. I believe it was actual use of the game and whose turn it was," said Lansdowne Police Chief Daniel Kortan.

It sounds like he phrased that response specifically to ward off a potential wave of violent video game outcry, doesn't it? It's nice to see that situations like this can be resolved without immediately tossing the blame on our favorite hobby.

Thirteen year-old Jahmir Ricks was arrested at the scene, tearfully confessing to police upon their arrival. He is being charged as an adult with murder in the first degree. Something failed in this situation that had absolutely nothing to do with video games. Normal people don't go from arguing over who gets to play a video game to murderous rage in the blink of an eye.

  • Christ man, I remember fighting over who got to play next but damn...

  • I had a situation like this once. Just nobody died. I just lost two of my teeth.

  • The 13 year old killed the 16 year old? By stabbing him in the chest? Twice?!?

Yeah, this probably involved more than "I call next"

  • Jack Thompson in three, two, one...

  • And who said Nintendog's doesn't promote violence.

  • Again, WHERE THE FUCK ARE THE PARENTS!?!

  • I love the fact they used a PS2 (or PS1 or PS3, who knows?) controller in their news bar. I blame Sony for making fun games (though not as fun as Ninty's)!!!

  • ugh!
    i hate stupid people.

  • More tragedy ready to become just another clip of ammo in Thompson's bag.

It's sad that people are like this.

  • i remeber fighting over whose turn it was but it would just be "MOM!!! Tom wont let me play!"

"Tom, give your brother a turn to play"

    and that was it.

stabbing? must be a violent family enviorment.

  • Who is this police chief? Doesn't he know that the game is *always* to blame?! He obviously needs to go back to PR school.

  • @ZenGaijin: Parents shouldn't have to watch 13 year old kids 24 hours a day, especially when he's with his 16 year old brother.

  • philadelphia is trying its best to be the murder capital now a days =/

  • @RJG: WE DON'T SPEAK OF HE-WHO-MUST-NOT-BE-NAMED!

    *breathes*

  • Damn, that kid killed his brother and now his life is ruined for nothing...how sad.

  • But its not watching them 24/7 I know the parents probably heard the arguement and the kid probably didn't just pull a knife outta thin air.

  • This just in, people kill other people over shoes. I demand shoes be taken off shelves effective immediatly.

  • That is horrible. The poor mother basically lost both her children. I'm inclined to give her the benefit of the doubt and not assume bad parenting right off the bat. I would think there is something deeply wrong with the 13 year old that goes far beyond anything bad parenting could cause. Horrible.

  • JT's car comes screeching in in 3..2..1..

..and then proceeds to be fired upon by the guilty party

  • Also, gamepolitics.com reports:
The Delaware County Daily Times has more, including word that the dispute was over a house rule:

It was a house rule whenever the kids were playing a video game: Lose the match, lose the joystick, according to authorities.

  • @Kuraudo:
No but they should have raised him not to think of stabbing someone over the next turn...

  • This is horrorable, added so cause you know JT will use it as more ignoramus ammo...

Think of it as evolution in action.

  • @SanjiX:
Yeah, I just got hit in the head with a bat (ok, a wiffle ball bat.... but a bat nonetheless).

  • i'm sure someone has died over "next" for the hoola hoop.

  • Murderous rage? The kid's 13, and cried his confession, apparently without prodding. There are waaay too many unknown variables in this story to point to anything (except the parents, which is a safe bet when it's involving children).

  • @Hills: Unless we know more about the parents, their methods and what they did or didn't teach their kids, that's debatable. I think there are people who are beyond any kind of help, no matter their upbringing.

  • hah this happened to a friend of mine back when Excite Bike was released. I threw the Nintendo controller at him and it gave him a couple stitched to the forehead..

  • Image of Candlejack Candlejack at 10:47 AM on 07/17/07 *

Jesus what's going on lately? People going insane over the excitement of PS3, 360 and Wii?

  • Image of dv8godd dv8godd at 10:48 AM on 07/17/07 *

They should have been out doing drugs and having sex like other kids their age.

    Videogames are for adults.

  • Wow I will never use my "its my house, my system, I get first player!" argument again...

  • Murder in the first degree? This sounds more like a crime of passion to me. They got pissed at each other like brothers often can, but things took an unusual turn for the worse.

  • man i remember when i was a kid some bad fights broke out over video games.

  • This is why you always buy two controllers and multi-player games... Preferably sports and party games. RPGs are for geeks and, apparently, psycho murderers.

  • Parents get just as much undeserved blame as the video games do.

  • This is pretty harsh. And, the kid must have just been very violant.

So, what exactly did he use to stab him?

  • @Digitalguardian: haha are you referring to Jack Thompson? Or literally Lord Voldemort? =P

  • It could have been over the last ice cream sandwich just as easily. Maybe Reggie and the Nintendo boys need to make a Wii steakknife accessory to help avoid these things in the future. I mean, Nintendo is already helping with IQ and fitness, why not domestic violence (accidental and intentional)? They could make a game where people cut steak with a Wiiknife and learn the proper use of the tool through videogames!

  • @Kuraudo:Well said; unfortunately people love a scapegoat. Whether it was or wasn't the fault of the parents (or anything else really) we may not ever know, but blame will most likely end up placed on something other than the kid. Especially since he is so young.

  • I bet his lawyer will go with "Video game made him do it" strategy in the court.

  • Thank God that Jack T. has been disbarred, and is being psychoanalyzed. (Even if it is temporary it is still awesome.)

  • Clearly it wasn't the games fault, since the kid used a knife. Gamers (like mafiosos) only use guns.

  • Image of Candlejack Candlejack at 11:00 AM on 07/17/07 *

    @liarliar17: Deeply disturbing.

Where do I sign up? Heh

  • wonder if they were playing mortal kombat on the wii, talk about creating your own fatality.

  • I once beaned my older sister in the back of the head with an NES controller.. I still feel bad about it almost 20 years later. And I've seen friends get into near fistfights over next. Does anyone not remember SF2 on SNES? I'm not talking about especially violent people, or even folks with natural violent tendencies. These were kids from good homes, good families, who ordinarily wouldn't hurt a fly.

... maybe video games really do make people violent?

  • btw 6 action news (philly) has the best theme song ever

  • Finally, an intelligent person speaks. If there is anything to blame it's bad parenting.

Just imagine, "Honey, have you noticed little Jahmir's Jack the Ripper like rage recently?"
"It's a phase. He'll grow out of it. You got anymore PCP?"

Instead of Censors we need some mandatory sterilization programs.

  • omg.. i got into fights with my bro bc who turn was next.. but never like this...
    poor family...

was it a mature/violence game??? hope they don`t take the fight that way, and they listen to the comments (e.g. by police) made so far.

Because like you said here.."something failed here" again poor family...

  • Man...that's sad. A life is gone just like that. And likely enough, people will overlook the younger kid's problem (whatever it was that triggered it) and look at video games.

Geez, he hasn't even shown up yet, but I'll already say it: GO AWAY JT. Now's not a good time.

It's NEVER a good time for JT.

  • When I was younger, common sense and a bit of parents involvement used to be all that was needed to know who should be playng next. Today, only common sense. Anyway, I can't put myself on blaming parents or anyone else without knowing more details.

About the picture, do they put a small car on the news bar when a similar case happens in traffic? Or a little Scrooge McDuck-like money bin when it happens in a bank? *sigh*

  • I'd love to hear which game they were playing. It's gotta be pretty damn good to kill your brother over it. In fact that should be the new saying when a game is really awesome. It's not just good, its "stab your brother" good... not to be mean or anything.

  • @kuromankuro: I just realized... We went straight from discussion of a tragedy of brothers killing each other of whose turn it was, to how Jack Thompson will just use this against us. That is very selfish of us... Someone has died at his brothers hand and we only think of our own well being and how our favorite hobby will be affected. We are all guilty of this, myself included. Or maybe I'm being dramatic.

  • @thaichaiguy: I'd put money on it being madden :D

  • I feel for the poor kid, I used to have problems managing my anger. If I had a knife nearby, I probably would have stabbed my brother many a time. Instead, mostly I yelled my lungs out and threw things at him. Keep all deadly objects away from games and siblings. Why was there a steak knife near them in the first place? Did they just leave various knives lying around the house?

  • kuromankuro: I was just going to say that too. Basically the summary of this post is: Oh someone just got killed, but thank god it's not our fault since the police chief said so!

  • first off where were the parents? Like mentioned above, I always used my parents to force my brother to give me my turn.

But second, I feel really bad for these parents. They are going to lose 2 of their children over this.

And what shocks me the most is how a 13 yr old can ONLY be considered an adult if he/she kills someone. I find that fucking incredible to be honest. They are going to put this kid in court over killing his brother, sentencing him as an adult. At what point did he become an adult? I dont know many sober adults that go on fits of rage with a knife over a turn on a gaming system. It is obvious enough to me that this kid was acting immature, and did a stupid act. So, I ask why do we try him as an adult? Because it was murder, and not assault? Because someone was killed, therefor he was thinking with an adult mindset?

This is just silly. I know it is still murder. But, murder for an adult puts them away for a long time. This kid most likely wont get out of prison til his 30s or 40s. I am sorry, I just dont think that a 13 yr old should be convicted as an adult, just wont ever make sense to me.

  • @ghede:

That would be my question as well. Did the kid run into the kitchen to grab a knife, or was there a knife just sitting there?

I don't know what to make of this, personally. When I was in high school I remember my older brother chucking a steak knife at me (it hit the wall, not me). I can blame his behavior on alcohol, but really, I blame my brother for being an a-hole.

  • Thats what you get for leaving knives around.
    This is crazy.

  • Image of Pezdispenser Pezdispenser at 11:26 AM on 07/17/07 *

There are too many unknown unknowns to say exactly what caused this. As far as we know, it's wholly possible that they had good parents, and the younger brother was a boyscout (explaining the access to a knife).

Heck, the exact same thing happened not too long ago over a piece of fried chicken. It wasn't the chicken's fault, it and wasn't the parents either, since the brothers were full grown adults. Some things we just can't figure out without knowing more about the situation.

  • As nerdy as this may sound, after reading the article I reminded of the movie scene when Gollum killed his brother for the One Ring.

As tempting as a game is, it´s his own fault. You can´t blame a beer brand when someone gets drunk, same thing for this case.

  • That is fucking sad but at the same time, how fucked up can you be to kill your own bother over something sooooooooooooooooooooooo stupid. Fuck, poor kid, his life is ruined now :o(

  • It's good the sheriff downplayed the involvement of the video game itself, otherwise we'd be hearing reports that he actually stabbed his brother WITH the controller. It's bad enough the news anchor lady started out with the usual spin, "A video game has take taken the life of...," yeah, Master Chief just busted out of the TV and went wild.
