The Banner Saga 2 is an excellent strategy game, but the one thing fans (or even casual observers) tend to associate most with the series its its absolutely gorgeous 2D art.
From epic backgrounds to hand-drawn animation, it’s one of the most beautiful video game series on the planet, so it’s an absolute pleasure today to be able to showcase a range of art from The Banner Saga 2.
Everything you’re seeing here is the work of two artists, Stoic co-founder Arnie Jorgensen and Igor Artyomenko (whose work we’ve featured here previously).

I pointed this out before, but the artwork in both games is heavily influenced by the art of Eyvind Earle, an artist who did background work on early Disney movies and later branched into a very successful painting career in California. I have yet to play these games, but now I think have to, if only for the art alone. I’ve been a huge Earle fan since I was a teenager, and apparently the game even has a character named Eyvind as a nod to the artist.
Sadly, he passed away in 2000, but he left a staggering volume of amazing paintings that I will likely never be able to afford. Some of his work, below, so you can see how closely the game mirrors his paintings.
On a related note, I’ve been posting to Kotaku since 2008, and was starred when you could be- can I please get out of the Greys?
