i think you're confused about the differences between the vita/ps4 'direct connection,' and the 'over wifi' connection. the direct connection will only work when the devices are near each other, but the wifi version shouldn't matter.

there's two different ways to connect a vita to a ps4 - a direct connection, which is like an ad-hoc wifi connection between your phone and laptop, for example. the other way, which it seems they haven't actually tried, is connecting via standard wifi. Read more
