Activision CEO Sees Call of Duty as a Form of Social Media

Speaking to CNN earlier this week, Activision's CEO noted that more people play Black Ops, daily, than watch the late night hosts Leno, Letterman and Fallon, combined. No offense, but that would seem to be an easy goal to beat.

No, network television isn't the yardstick Bobby Kotick uses to measure Call of Duty as a social phenomenon. He likens the shooter to Facebook and text messaging, in terms of cultural relevance.

"The audience of 'Call of Duty' is probably greater in terms of size than in any other interactive form of entertainment," Kotick told CNN. "If you look at the 500 million people who are on Facebook and the way that people text each other and instant message and use video chat, there is now an evolution of media. Those are the characteristics and attributes that a generation and audiences feel are very important to their media and entertainment experiences."

CNN said Kotick believes the Call of Duty franchise delivers on that trend through its online multiplayer, which currently drives a majority of the Xbox Live traffic.

Kotick couldn't do the interview without getting in a shot at Infinity Ward which, though its founders were fired and are now embroiled in a lawsuit against Activision, is a studio the publisher still owns. "Multiplayer has been largely developed by Treyarch," Kotick asserted. "I don't think Treyarch got their due for how much they contributed in the production and polish to the multiplayer."

I know I posted this already in today's TAY, but this post seems more suited for it.

Other thread is here:[kotaku.com]

"Ok. This is going to be a very negative TAY post for me today.

The game I'm talking about is Black Ops. Specifically, the PS3 version.

To be brutally honest, it's a mess. It's shit coated with icing.

At first I thought the petition thing going on over the 'net was a joke. For the uninformed, petition is for a refund for the PS3 buyers.

Yesterday it was at 7,000. Now? 10,000 and counting.

And I can't blame 'em.

A list of problems/bugs plaguing it:

- Game crashing on loading screen or hanging and you need a hard reset to set things right.

- Shitty matchmaking. Almost always me and my friends end up in 2 bar ping games. Unless we're the host.

- Frame-rate stutters whenever a Napalm is deployed.

- Weird disconnects that happen for some unknown reason.

- Glitch where you can't see the score, radar, scoreboard, etc.

Glitch where your Killstreak reward will not show. Somebody posted this and I thought it was a joke. Until it happened to me. Attack Chopper, Attack Dogs not registering. (IE: I got 10 straight kills but the Chopper didn't trigger). I checked my KS rewards and they were set.

- Graphics and audio being inferior to MW2. Yes. The gun sounds are laughably bad. Tin-cans rattling off or something.

- Global/Friends Scoreboard not working properly.

- Spawn points are a mess! Easily the worst spawning system I've seen so far. Whenever I get the Chopper Gunner or whatnot, the enemies get spawn-raped. I get a ton of kills but I'm not exactly proud of how I got it.

And a bunch of other stuff that I won't even type. As this will be even longer than necessary.

Don't get me wrong. The core gunplay is a bit better in Blops than in MW2. At least constant noob-tubing and whatnot are kept to a minimum but the game isn't about skill. It's about who has the better connection.

Think you're good? Play against someone who has a 4 bar ping and you're at 1 bar. No matter how good you are, chances are you'll lose in a head to head battle.

And please don't tell me to work around this problem. As this problem shouldn't even exist in the first place.

I tried Locale Only, etc. Nothing works. People I've talked to did the same. Logged in my R3 account to see if it'll match me up with nearer opponents and still no good.

Most of the people I know are aware of the problems. They do play it as CoD is the only game they actually know how to play.

The patches they've released has done nothing so far.

The game is still fun...When it works properly. Which is like 3 games out of 10. I played for more than 10 games the other night joining different lobbies and my ping didn't go any higher than 2 bars.

My solution to this? Not play the friggin' game I bought with my hard-earned money. Last time I give in to friends and their pressuring.

I find it funny when people think their buying and spending habits don't factor or influence these things. When people are willing to buy shitty ports and are happy with it, guess what? Publishers will be more than happy to serve us shitty stuff! This is the sort of thing I'm talking about.

So I guess Activision accomplished their mission somewhat. Turn people into CoD zealots and they'll lap up everything they serve up. Even if it's a crappy port.

So thanks Treyarch! For making the decision that this will be my last CoD purchase an easy one. I shudder to think that Treyarch is considered the "premier" CoD developers.

Treyarch added in customization to guns, logos, etc. but didn't focus on the damn game itself. Way to show where your priorities lie. I honestly do not give a crap if my gun has "PWN" or "NoobZ" engraved it on. I'd rather have a less flashy but working game.

Sorry if I had to post this just after the holidays. But my annoyance and whatnot can't be contained.

I also apologize in advance for the eye-strain to the people that read this.

Only consolation for me is that Vietnam is out. KZ3 is right around the corner as well as Brink, Crysis 2, etc.

One last thing, before people flame me because they think I'm a "noob" or whatnot, my K/D ratio is 1.46 or 1.64. Not that high but respectable. My W/L ratio is 2.58 or something. And I've played the game close to 24 hours now. So that's ample time to see what's what.

Flame away, people! Flame away! But please let's keep it civilized. :)"

Oh, and can't help but add this:

"Multiplayer has been largely developed by Treyarch," Kotick asserted. "I don't think Treyarch got their due for how much they contributed in the production and polish to the multiplayer."

Seriously, Kotick? Haha! Not sure if he was joking or he's that deluded that polish=amount of copies sold.

Then again, he might be referring to how he's using the wads of money as toilet paper. And polish means polishing his ass, or cleaning his golden urinal with diamonds for urinal cakes.
