Last year, World of Warcraft developers Blizzard asked university students to "submit an original 3D environment piece fit for World of Warcraft". Basically, a digital diorama of a new WoW setting.

After compiling entries for a few months, Blizzard has now revealed the Grand Prize winners, who each receive one hell of a prize package. Alongside some Blizzard swag and a 12-month WoW subscription, the top three artists you'll see below also scores "a three month mentorship by a member of the World of Warcraft art team, via email or phone critique of portfolio work".

For a kid trying to break into the business, learning from some of the best can be priceless.

DISCUSSION

As much as gamers and developers constantly chase outstanding graphics, and also how graphics has almost become the generation marker, it's still one of the least appreciated fields in gaming.

There are a few standouts here and there, mostly concept guys. But the names people know, and the praise from the community often goes to the designers and the programmers. Artist sometimes go unsung.
