The only multiplayer type of Sonic I enjoyed was in Sonic 2... you know, racing through the levels, collecting the power ups, competing to win the levels through various factors (Score, Time, Rings, TVs, etc).

If they could do that with this, I would believe that would be acceptable. Then again, it just might be better to let it be.

Xeneizes

@slomo788: Oh, PLEASE. Yakuza is nothing like GTA! It's much more like Shenmue than anything else! It has a complex fighting system, and it's more story-based than GTA. You don't take missions, you progress the story on stuff you do for yourself, not for others.

Condemned is not a survival horror like Resident Evil, Silent Hill, or Siren! It's a first-person game on its own league! The Club is a game meant to feature high scores, and for fast runs.

This Hedgehog engine is funny. Funny in the sense that you have an engine worked on for 3 years and they can only get it to run at 30 FPS. This isn't just random complaining here. It's like playing F-Zero GX at 30. Only hurts it. Maybe they shouldn't have said how long that engine took to develop because they still can't get it at where it should be.

This one initially looked like it would be great. But I still have huge doubts about what potential it will ultimately fullfill. Honestly, it still doesn't sound like it's what fans really wanted. Whatever fans are left. They invest so much money into these games, take a chance on us and put out something like the DS version. You can't get any worse. Maybe they are trying to start on the right way.

Sega really doesn't get it do they? Everything they do is just not done the right way.

Godzilla-Sushi

Good is not good enough anymore. Yakuza? I'll buy GTA4. Condemned? Silent Hill, Resident Evil and maybe Siren. The Club? No thanks (so many better 3rd person shooters out there. It lacks... oomph) Virtua Tennis? Buy Top Spin this June and try to play Virtua Tennis on anything else than PSP. Virtua Fighter? Maybe, if you can't wait for Street Fighter. I never played Universe at War (don't have a 360 yet) but like any good Sega game, it doesn't entice me with its 6.4/10 overall rating. I'd rather wait for World in Conflict, Endwar or even Halo Wars.
Sega is a very atypical Japanese company: they think that all we're waiting for in a sequel is updated graphics.

I'M VERY ANGRY!

Heres why. Sonic unleashed is based on Sonic and the secret rings, gameplay wise. That part is fine, the best part about Secret Rings was the way the game played on regular stages. It was fast, furious, fun... all the stuff you would want in a sonic game. Where Secret Rings failed was it would force you to do the same stage several times over with various conditions to unlock the next one, making anything outside of the main stages a tedious chore.

So what do they do with the sequil? They take out the entire control scheme that made the damn game fun in the goddamn first place.

LuppyLuptonium

@zetopazio: I believe I played those, but I surely don't remember buying those. I was surprised that they were actually released post sonic CD when I checked out the chronology on wikipedia in conjunction with reading this post, I guess I have a fuzzy memory. Sonic 2 rocked, as did the sega CD game, but the others just seemed a little re-hashed-- back then I had a limited budget, so I probably only bought a couple titles a year and played them til they were dead, and was very particular about what game would be worthy of a purchase. Even though I consider them a bit re-hashed, I would agree they are much better than the recent incarnations and would say even taking those and sonic adventure into account, it has been about 9 years since a decent sonic game, which is an awfully long time in video game history.

munchausen

Stuff like not being able to see turns coming up has always been in Sonic games really. It doesn't detract much from the game though. More recent 3D Sonic games like Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 required you to memorize levels as if they were a racetrack in order to get the best ratings on them. As you play more, the better you get, and the cooler you get to feel as you breeze through levels.

Real world environments though? You don't need those to flex graphical muscle. Take any of the elaborate stages from the old 2D games and you will have plenty to flex. The first thing that comes to my mind is the opening jungle levels of Sonic 3. Create awesome looking fictions worlds like that and combine them with this gameplay, then you should have a fantastic formula.

Mit

This is going to be a great game. It's set in the real world, which I know might be scary to some of you considering its a rare occurance for you to venture there, but it will work wonderfully bringing sonic into a real world and not just his own convoluted, angry robot filled fantasy land where water is the highest evil. The addition of boosts and faster speed sounds great as I feel like sonic has never truly reached the potential of how fast he can go in other games. The closest I ever felt was in Sonic Adventure. Sonic and the secret rings was an alright game because of the control scheme and the fact that it somewhat returned to the track sonic usually stays on, unfortunately it was so short they added in a huge amount of what they deemed to be "replay-value" which just made the game a lot harder and a lot less appealing to play. Also, everyone is up in arms about Sonic being able to supposedly transform into a werewolf of sorts, but what about when he transformers in to supersonic? That's even more ridiculous. Have any of you played games like Prince of Persia or Jak and Daxter? Those games included transformations and they worked just fine, in fact they recieved some very high scores for what they were.

What I'm saying is this, this new sonic looks to include an abundance of the true essence of sonic the hedgehog, along with some great new features and hopefully an entertaining story. This game could be a failure is it's anything like the Sonic for the 360/PS3, but lets hope they took a hint from that game.

Desmondia

you most certainly are not... give me a vibrant cartoon fantasy world over... Greece... anyday, but Sega just don't care anymore

I really hope that this plays well as a platformer too, and not just a supersonic rollercoaster, something that the Sonic Rush games weren't up to

people seem to forget that what made the classics great was that they were great platformers, speed was used intermittantly as a reward for dextrous platforming

new Sonic games have ignored this and focussed on speed and bland samey level design...

FenderMaster

If they can top the experience that was Sonic Adventure, then I'm sold. Though I do wonder if the Sega that made the original Sonic Adventure is simply gone forever. They have released a few gems since then, but it seems like the moment they pretty much ditched development on any sort of quirky, arcadey titles is about the same time Sega as a whole went straight down hill.

Nightshift Nurse: Mile High Colonic
