E3 as it was is never coming back. We all loved it, but it was an overdone event that grew completely out of proportion. Nowadays, all info like that can be disseminated over the internet, and private functions are fairly common with the big boys.

Next year the companies are gonna say this year felt a little cramped, so they'll add on another hall. Then the next year after the ESA fees settle down from this switcheroo nonsense some of the companies that jumped ship will climb back on and they'll need to use another hall. Then the NEXT year Sony is going to want to install some nifty indoor fireworks and smoke machines for atmosphere, which will require at LEAST another hall for fire safety reasons. Pretty soon after that the proper discipline will be instilled in the ESA and media alike. EVERYONE WILL KNOW DISCIPLINE.

Long story short, the return of E3 as you knew it is inevitable. We just have to wait through the ESA taking its time so as to distill the amount of backlash it will get for being FUCKING STUPID.

The locations were probably auctioned off with Sony and Nintendo securing the prime real estate in the building. Sony's other booth is also conveniently placed so that you can't miss a Sony logo whereever you may be in the building and maybe, just maybe, Sony told Konami to pitch tent next to Microsoft so as to draw Xbox fans away from MS's booth and over to MGS4, or at least have them drooling in jealousy. Yeah that's it, Sony's devine master plan. :p

It has always been a bit difficult to lie and cheat your way in. The first year I should have been able to legitimately get in, I forgot to register and simply snuck in (albeit with friends who had badges). Last year I was there as a part of Microsoft Events as one of the on-hand techs, otherwise I would have had no chance. I do miss the 'old' E3, it was ridiculous and spectacular and a complete money pit for the big companies. They banded together and decided to bring the costs down, make it more intimate. I spent 98% of my time at the Viceroy Hotel last year and felt like Microsoft was really able to get out information and hype things better than the 'old' glitz and glamor. I don't know fully how Sony and Nintendo handled this, but if it was anything like Microsoft's plan of renting out an entire hotel and throwing tons of parties, I think it really made meeting people in the industry and doing business a lot easier. Like I said, it was more intimate, personal. Do I wish it was more of a free-for-all? Maybe. I think the best choice is to make it easier to get in as a member of independent media/blogs/etc., even the lesser known ones.
