the fact of the matter is, that no matter what we as gamers, young and old do or say there will always be asshats that say what they want. Another fact is if they say it with force and sound like they know what their talking about then people will believe. but it is evadent in sales records alone that people are still smart and realize that glenn beck is an idiot.

A common statment on this site is that its not video games fault and thats true, i have yet to witness/heard from a fellow gamer that he/SHE (yes girls play games to glenn) commited an act of stupidity because of what they saw in games.

i write short stories for fun and alot of times they involve situations in games that i had just played but all stories, games, movies, books, radio and t.v. is based on imigaination maybe some fact but mostly imigaination.

GTA4 is a game based on real life to an extent, not the other way around.

To ALL parents be informed check in on your kids KNOW what they are watching and doing, guide from afar tho, sheltered kids turn out to be the worst sometimes.

To ALL gamers play games and make decisions based on what you know is wrong and right. Its been the way of the world for thousands of years. Heres a little factoid: most criminal offenders admit they knew what there were doing was wrong. and most people make decisions based on experience's that they lived through not what they watched or played.

another thing about calling gamers who post/read blogs and fourms losers? i don't see any losers in here i see offended intelligent aware people who have an opinion based on what they know in contestment to slander by a man of the media of a network that was once based on truth and now eaten by T.V. always fishing for rateings.

A politician would be wise to read these comments and know what we as the population think because we all know they "want" to know and reach out to us so they can win our vote well prove it to us stop saying this and that stop campaigning lies and put forward what you really can do not what people want to hear you can do.

Wow, really? I know the world has a lot of situations and locations going to pot right now, but can they really be THAT focused on a video game?
I know some games (cough grand theft auto cough) can be extremely violent, with questionable content, but are these really at fault for our society and the behavior of our children?
There's just as much a threat to society from a book (didn't that Golden Compass one get petitions to be banned for something about the children killing God?) as there is a threat from a movie (Jackass, anyone?) as there is from a game.
Let's take a step back from the carnage that is Earth and her inhabitants, take a breath, and look at everything in a new light, shall we?

I told her that if you ranked all nations by their permissiveness to porn, then ranked them by the quality of life for women, those lists would look the same. With liberal nations like the Netherlands on one end of the spectrum, and repressive cultures like Saudi Arabia on the other.

Same thing for games.

Surely rockstar can sue CNN for stuff like this. They are spreading misinformation which reflects badly on their product and company. Maybe if game companies were more aggresive in defending their products from lies like these there would be less of it spread by the media.

I always lol at political arguments. Listen to yourselves. You have Beck saying something that's off the wall, and then some of you up above are starting the whole 'conservative empire' theory and shit.

I admit, I like Beck. If any of you have ever WATCHED his show, he hits a lot of points that today's media strays out of and refuses to talk about, such as rape near the borders, success in Iraq, etc. Basically, anything that supports the Bush administration, liberal media won't talk about. He also isn't afraid to talk about the Bible and practically anything you can't normally talk about without getting a shotgun to your face. He's not a bad guy.

However, he failed here. Hard. Honestly, this is just another politician/someone in law inferring a game the wrong way. Liberman did it. Thompson did it. Half of Congress does it. Just lol and move on. I don't want to be fair to James Dobson... but... to be fair: I'm pretty sure he says this exact same kind of bullshit about movies and music on a weekly -- if not daily -- basis. I mean, he's Dr. James Dobson.

That said, I'm sick and tired of people like him making Christians look ignorant. He gives atheists too many reasons to point fingers and make fun of Christians for being stupid, and that, in turn, makes me, as an atheist, look bad.

But he is being totally ignorant. He's ignoring the fact that the game is marketed to adults. He's ignoring the stats which clearly show that fewer M-rated games are landing in the hands of children. He's ignoring the actual content of the game.

Honestly, I'm jealous of the man. I wish I could get paid to go on national television, say things that are bat-shit insane, and have millions of people love me for it. No, seriously, I'm unemployed right now. That would be great. Hey, speaking of: why not investigate the link between unemployment, underemployment, overworking, insufficient salaries, and all of this "violent behavior" in children that come from "dysfunctional families?" Why doesn't Dobson speak out against executives and managers who mis-manage companies into the ground, with their only consequence being that they get to ship their diligent workers off to the unemployment line and reap a bigger year-end bonus due to reduced operating costs? Because things like that are a lot more relevant to the social ills Dobson decries. Wake up and catch the point.

Being a conservative myself and owning GTA IV does that make me a sinner? Eh, the group of hard righters who try to enforce their life habits onto others violate the very foundation of conserativism by trying to change something that doesn't impact their private life... So what if I'm flying down a vitural speedway in a Dodge Viper, so what if I'm getting in a heated gunfight in a vitural arena, so what if I'm getting into someone else's car and driving off with it in a vitural city. I don't do any of this in real life mostly due to the fact that if I tried to do so I'd be dead in a few seconds in most cases, especialy if I try to mimic Unreal Tournament and tried to jump off a building and try to land on a "jump pad" made out of a VW van...

As for "rape" in the game, the poor sod must be confused with the radio stations about the current Liberty City Mayor who supports underaged sex and how he needs to be voted out on WEASEL news... Therefore, if it is pop culture that is the cause for "all of society's problems," then it would seem that Time Warner is causing and profiting from society's problems, wouldn't it? Second, crimes such as murder, auto theft, and assault are the effects of causes, which are called motives. Johnny killed Suzie because she screwed his brother, and was filled with rage when he found out. This type of crime, a crime of passion, has happened since written history was recorded and will continue to happen long after our children's children are dead. However, if Johnny happened to be playing GTA IV when he found out, and then killed Suzie, well these are the types of situations people like John Bruce "Jack" Thompson just LOVE to draw attention to. However, what Thompson and Beck seem to be mistaken about is that GTA IV isn't the motive, or the cause, of any crime, and to say so "would be stupid to do."

seeing most responses to my comments; it sounds like they may have removed the gun-in-arse scene.

(But a google trying to find actual substatiated comment about this only finds people complaining about it getting cut from the Australian release)

I don't know the full details about the scene (there's no more information other than people complaining about its supposed cut).

I can't tell you if it is in the game or not. (only that it was widely reported - included here at kotaku that it would be in all versions other than the Australian release).

I guess the game-players are the only people that know. So maybe I retract my comments :)

When that thing came out prior to the game's release claiming this was in the game, Take-2 denied it and so far it seems rightly so.

Couldn't Rockstar do anything about any of this? Isn't it literally defamation? In that other Glenn Beck video that's linked here, Beck claims at one point that you can chainsaw policemen in half. Not only is there not a chainsaw at all in the game, but bodies always stay intact as far as actual deformation or removal of body parts.

Isn't there some legal ground here for Rockstar to go on as far as defamation/slander? It's some pretty egregious shit.

They fear too much but I did agree that a stronger family breeds a better child. That is if both parents are involved in their child's life. If you really just let your child run amok with no boundaries or don't talk to them about the tough stuff. Explain to them why something is wrong rather than assume they understand. We might have less of those shout-y kids that we have on xblive granted kids are generally more competitive than someone older thus are more aggressive but even when I was in my aggressive competitive stage I never cursed someone out and told them to eff themselves when I lost.

Despite the fact these two are erroneous specifically regarding GTA IV's content (though much of what they speak of is in fact in it), give them some credit. When was attempting to stick up for the sanctity of the family unit, even if being GTA ignormauses, considered a bad thing? A lot of kids would most definitely give up their copy of GTA IV for a loving and present mother and father. Anyone who has actually played the game (and paid attention), would have noticed that there really isn't much killing at all. Only specific characters can be killed. The rest writhe on the ground saying something like, "I broke my knee." You CAN'T kill them. No matter how many head shots you take. They CAN'T die. So much for the murder and killing theory. @Ess: @Ess: So Dobson is an idiot and stupid for believing what, exactly? That rape is bad? That stylized depictions of rape are bad? That interactive stylized depictions of rape are bad? That there is no rape in GTA? That people are affected (whether positively or negatively) by the games they play?

Oh, wait, this is the internet. It's totally cool to hate on conservative Christians no matter their stance on anything, while everyone else gets a free pass.

If people can be emotionally moved by games (like when Aeris dies and nothing you can do can stop Cloud from killing her), then is it hard to believe that they can be negatively affected by games as well?

I'm not saying that GTA causes people to go out and steal, murder, rape, or anything else, but I find it naive to think that people will be unaffected by playing it.

As a side note, why are people shocked that the head/founder of a huge Christian non-profit organization is critical of GTA? That's like being shocked at the founder of PETA's opinion of a Deer Hunter game.

I could look at an exclusive coverage or a excerpt report on a topic that I have no knowledge about and be totally baited. I know if I was a parent and had no clue about the reality of gaming, I would have been keen to these "spokesperson".

Let's face it. Video games are newborns in the world of mainstream media and culture. 10 years ago you wouldn't see jokes about games in SNL or Conan O'Brien. Maybe not even 5 years ago. The thing is, porn, movies, music, television and books have all been around a lot longer than video games. They are an easy target and politicians know that silly voters will listen to these claims and back them. Games are still babies and don't have the backing to deflect the attacks.

It took other forms of media a long time to be "accepted" and attacked less. Soon, video games will feature as much alien side-boob and car theft as they want. Maybe it'll even be viewed as artistic.

Oh, and also, whenever Grand Theft Auto IV is mentioned ANYWHERE on television, they ONLY mention the violence because they don't know a fucking thing about the game itself. The violence itself isn't what makes the game so good. But it's a staple of the GTA series. You can have a GTA game with the same basic gameplay but less violence, and it could still be a good game... but it wouldn't be the same without the violence. It's like having Glenn Beck's show... without Glenn Beck. Just footage of his empty studio. It can still potentially be a good show, but it wouldn't be the same without Glenn Beck spouting out made up crap for an hour (or for however long his show is).

I gotta be honest as 22year old Canadian college student who's played video games all my life, never have I thought "hmmmm I think I'll go kill somebody after playing GTA." You know what the problem is in America everybody wants to blame somebody or something, how about blaming yourself. If you play a game or watch a movie and repeat what you see you are simply a fool, you are weak minded and you are to blame, if you're a minor then you and your parents are the one to blame not just your parents. Stop blaming the media blame yourself and another thing I can have sex with a prostitute kill her and chainsaw a cop in real life I choose not to because I know right from wrong; there is no such thing as desensitizing proper judgment, and lets be honest 99% of the super violent crimes in America are committed by people who probably have never played video games in there lives, if you don't believe me ask those on death role in your penitentiaries. I choose to do violent things in games not in life, isn't that good enough? Laser tag or real guns? GTA or real life Crips & Bloods? And one last thing Glenn! Where can I find that chainsaw in GTA I've been looking for it for a while now and just can't seem to find it.

God, I just absolutely hate it when the media lashes out on a game that they know NOTHING about. I remember Glenn Beck saying something about "gamers building replicas of the Starship Enterprise in their mother's garage" or some crap like that. He has yet to have an ACTUAL GAMER defend GTA4 and the gaming community on his show. He did have an author of "Grand Theft Childhood" on his show, but he acted like a total ASS to her.

And in the end, it's not games, TV, movies etc. that are making people more violent or whatever the hell they're saying. It's the PERSON. The media's giving the wrong idea about GTA4 and video games and gamers in general to millions of people (See: Fox News/Mass Effect), and they won't even give gamers a chance to defend themselves. I mean, Glenn Beck had JACK FREAKING THOMPSON as a guest to discuss GTA4. That's like having Uwe Boll on someone's show to discuss the new Indiana Jones movie. Glenn Beck must have been like, "Oh, this guy hates Grand Theft Auto! I know nothing about his reputation, but I'll invite him to the show anyway!"

And it's not games, TV or movies that are destroying society: it's 24 hour news channels that are.

It is "There is no rape in GTA IV, and even if there was, so what? As long as a game didn't condone rape (same goes for books, music, and movies) what's the problem? Why can't mature rated games deal with mature themes?"

They did this with Mass Effect. They said Mass Effect has nudity and explicit sex. Everyone came to ME's defense and said, no nudity, tastefully done, just a cut scene.

That is wrong. It implies that the objection would be OK if there was nudity or interactivity.

The response has to be that idiots like Dobson are both stupid AND wrong.

The reason videogames are such magnets for cultural fear-mongers is that it's entrenched in the idea that it's part of "youth culture", and because of that will never try one. They have no problem with movies because they can appreciate a good movie and see the value in the medium. These guys are on the outside looking in, so of course they don't see the depth of narrative or the way games can act as art. As the industry opens up and begins drawing in a larger audience, this kind of shenanigans should start to fall off; until the next medium comes along and gets them pissed.
