That said, we ALL know that Sony will be on top again within the year, so there no need to blow smoke up any ass's by saying the the numbers for MS system are higher. For the moment they are and the installed base is the reason. The system was out like 2 years before the other, and was cheaper to purchase. I personally bought the PS3 Special Edition. Who cares about the DLC on the 360? If thats the only reason you bought the game, i have some moon rocks for sale! Besides, i wouldnt put it past R* to come up with DLC for the PS3 eventually. Compare the numbers at the end of the year. Then we can see who's on top.

They had the episodic content thing and imo practically had the game exclusive to themselves. Thats why they could easily push more copies, its all about advertisements now, Gaming has gone global and companies now sell beyond the hardcore dermographic as before where sales were determined by the ratings on sites, reviews in mags and the word of mouth.

The more somthing is advertised the more it captures the casual gamers eye and thats where all the sales are, the hardcore gamers are still there they are just a minority these days.

That point is also worrying because now companies main aim is to sell to the larger market games arent what they used to be.

I hammered GTA4 in less than 2 days im almost on 100% completion after a weekish and i've been playing online, the game just feels far to easy and the same has to be said for DMC4

If MGS goes the same way im gonna just give up gaming i hate being walked around games by the hand like a little fairy.

Regardless, they shouldn't be pushing one system over another as a store. If you ask a cashier specifically what his opinion is, or if there's a marked difference between versions (e.g. F.E.A.R. for PS3), that's fine, but not otherwise.

I'm not sure about the Gamestop locations you guys go to, but the couple I frequent push 360 HARD. They gave me shit for buying a PS3, gave me shit for buying DMC 4 on PS3 instead of 360... and wouldn't even sell me a copy of GTA IV for PS3 when I went in. Yes, they had copies on the shelf saying "New $59.99" but when I brought one up to buy it they said 'all the copies are on hold for preorders', told me they had 8 copies left, but that they would only sell it to me if I came back after 8:30pm (this is the day after launch) because that's when they could sell the preorders that hadn't been picked up.

I bought it for PS3 at Best Buy on the way home. I would be very interested to see the split at stores like BB, Target, and WalMart-- stores with employees that don't actively rip on PS3 whenever they get the chance.

For what it's worth, I own 2 360s-- a launch day premium (that has been repaired for RROD twice now) and a falcon Elite.

GTA is known (by casuals and hardcores alike) as a Playstation game. For Xbox to steal a 2:1 share, regardless of install base, is good for them and bad for Sony.

Don't forget, GTAIII might as well have been a 1:0 ratio for PS2 vs Xbox. It sold a bucket load of systems for them. Now Sony have to share that momentum (as a 60/40 split against) with Xbox.

Given it's history, I'm honestly surprised it wasn't more in Sony's favor.

Yeah the 360 failure rate is inexcusably high, but just because something happened in the past and is hard for you to remember doesn't mean it wasn't as prevalent as something in the here and now. The percentage of PS2s that were manufactured within the first year or two that stopped working properly is much much higher. There are many more that stopped working that actually continued to work. Just from the few game store locations I worked at it would seem to be much more than 50% of the PS2s in that period.
The info's really doesn't pertain to this article, but it's annoying when people try to use the passage of time to fudge the facts.

besides, you should think about the number of people willing to spend a lot of money on a console. And that the more consoles there are in people's homes, the less consoles will be sold. Unless there is a major price cut.
So yeah, the PS3 is outselling the XBOX360. But how can you tell which one will have the bigger install base in like 2 years from now?

And even more: It's not ALL about how many consoles you sell. It's also about how much you profit PER console.

No point in selling a lot if your profit is ridiculously small. And yes, i know it's not all abou that either.

I think it's a very complicated calculation, and everything besides REAL numbers is speculation. So lets stick with the real numbers.
And according to those numbers, MS is first and Sony is second. (not talking about the wii, of course)

At first, I did not believe the stories about so many 360s dying, but when all my friends' 360s starts dying one after another, it became clear that it is a wide spread problem.

The probability of DRE on the PS2 is nowhere near the failure rate on the 360. In fact, I don't recall ANY consumer electronic from a brand-name that is as prone to defect as the 360.

if M$ has a bigger install base... Well, that means that (at least so far) they are winning the fight against sony. Period. These percentage excuses don't work because it really doesn't matter.

People are talking that "if the install base advantage is 3:1 and the GTA IV sales are less than that, that is bad fot M$" -- NOT AT ALL. Let's just think:

1: you should consider the number of "casual gamers" (if you can say that) who own an xbox360. It's fact that its a lot bigger than the number of them who have a PS3. And would that people buy GTA IV? I'd say not many of them would.
So... I'm not being a fanboy here... i'm just trying to deal with the facts.
I believe that if the numbers are actually those, than M$ is still winning the game. And no point making excuses. If your installed base is smaller, that only means that you sold less consoles. So......... you are losing.

The reason for high sales of GH on 360 can be put down to downloadable content, next gen graphics, online play.

To be real, yeah, Microsoft isn't beating Sony in sales by an ideal, perfect ratio, but the fact is, they are, and that's all there is.

The install base for the 360 is much higher than that of the PS3 so more sales for Microsoft is pretty inevitable. Not to mention the advertisment campaign didnt even mention the fact that it was also released for the PS3.

I think the fact that the PS3 has managed to sell 40% of the overall sales is a big achievement especially since the bundle deal with the system and the game there will most likely be alot more systems in peoples homes now thanks to this.

That number will also increase thanks to the launch of MGS4 soon.

I expect to see big things from Sony in the near future but im not going to shoot them down for selling 20% less GTA4 copies than the Xbox tbh.

When you take that into account, you can easily see that the PS3 had the overall better attach rate and this has nothing to do with people "switching over".

Some people already owned a 360 and simply bought the game for that system.
