That makes no sense to me. If I took Halo 3 and replaced Master Chief with, I don't know, a blue frog with rabbit ears, would that make the game fresh? In my opinion, it wouldn't make the game fresh; it would make it the same old game, except with you playing a blue frog with rabbit ears.

Okami (which, by the way, I own for the PS2) is a great game. It's one of the best games on the PS2. I do like it, and always have. I just don't think it's particularly fresh. It's basically Ocarina of Time (and yes, the same applies to Twilight Princess). Bioshock? A dumbed-down version of System Shock 2.

These games are neither original nor fresh. They're good games with solid, refined gameplay, great graphics and interesting stories, and that is ok. It's more than most games can claim. But they're not innovative or fresh.

While I like those games I realize that save for a few minor tweaks they are essentially the same game, just like any other sequel. My point is that Nintendo does THE SAME THING.

Halo 2: Halo 1 with dual wielding and vehicle jacking
Halo 3: Halo 2 with equipment drops and hand independent reload.

GTA VC: GTA III with motorcycles
GTA SA: GTV VC with character progression and turf wars

I can easily recognize and accept that.

Mario Sunshine: 64 with a water hose
Galaxy: 64 in space.
(going to space is usually the sign of someone being out of ideas. ask Jason Voohees, The Leprechaun, and Critters. )

Zelda again pretty much orcarina over and over with minor tweaks. (also like mario, they don't even bother to change the story. Zelda/Peach is always in need of saving)

Mario Kart 64: mario kart in 3D
MK DD: mario kart with "co-op"
MK Wii: mario kart with waggle and bikes

Smash Bros:

every console generation, add more characters.

This is obviously a simplification on every one of these, but the point is the same. Nintendo is guilty of the same sequelitis that everyone else is (sometimes more so), but when they do it's "nostalgia" or "classic", but let Bungie, or Rockstar, or Neversoft, or anyone else under the sun try that and it's "derivative" or "lazy"

It's a double standard.

Mario, in case you haven't checked, recently changed substantially with Galaxy. Playing with gravity, small worlds, adding a secondary goal of collecting star bits with the pointer as you play the complex platformer; these things are initially subtle changes, but as the game progresses become much more obviously advancements of the "open world" style game.

While it's true that Zelda keeps returning to the OoT style and formula, these forays are punctuated with games that are both original and expansive; Majora's Mask introduced shape-shifting and scripted, scheduled world events, Wind Waker changed the visual style of the game and altered the layout of the world and plot substantially, Phantom Hourglass involved a brand new control scheme for the DS, and demonstrated it with a new arsenal of tools and a timed "hub" dungeon.

Even the core games in the arsenal have substantially changed, but those games are hardly all Nintendo has released. Nintendogs, Brain Age, Pikmin, Wii Fit, Wario Ware, Endless Ocean, CrossWorDS, Professor Layton, etc. Nintendo has been releasing a plethora of games unlike anything else out there.

Funniest thing ever on this site. If I could nominate part of a comment for comment of the week, this would be it.

I mean, everyone MUST realize that, while Halo is a pretty decent representation of its genre, there's not an original thing in it. The FPS genre in general is pretty stagnant, and hasn't changed much at all since Wolfenstein. The biggest changes were early on on the PC; now most of the differences are thematic and graphical upgrades, and Halo's choice of a space marine didn't exactly win any prizes for originality.

Halo is an extremely stereotypical FPS with a high level of polish put on it. That's not slamming it, it really is one of the best at what it is. But what it is is by no stretch of the imagination "original".

The graphics are no better, it reuses a lot of tracks from 64, Double dash, and DS Mario Kart. Pair that with the new items like the squid and cloud, I see nothing new worth mentioning. I suppose the choice for the control scheme is nice, but the Wii-wheel is by far the worst.

I was not specifically commenting on Mario Kart. Were I I'd give a nice detailed list of my problems. Not too terribly tough.

Honestly, I know it's the cool "in thing" these days for Kotaku to hate on Mario Kart but the simple fact is that A. the game isn't boring, B. the game controls flawlessly with EVERY control scheme, despite Kotaku's extremely lame moanings about how much they suck with the wheel, and C. more than likely you've never even played the game and are just floating along with the current cool trend to hate on Nintendo for no real reason.
