When it comes to hardware, WoW is a strange beast.

It runs no higher than 30-35fps on my system, whereas I get 40ish with Crysis maxed and cap AoC beta at 65.

That was ten years ago, and although it was a success it was still relegated to the niche of relatively tech savvy PC gamers. Things are much different now. Larger budget games require larger audiences, and anything even closely resembling a mainstream audience isn't going to go out of their way to figure out their GeForces from their Radeons. At the very best they're going to ask a Best Buy employee and still buy the cheapest on the shelves.

Hell, even I don't want to deal with the hassle of researching and upgrading and I tend to know more than the average Joe when it comes to this stuff.

I actually have Red Nails and Hour of the Dragon (very good reads btw, for those who like S&S). As for the illustrations, if you are talking about the comics, Barry Windsor-Smith was the original comic artist, followed for a long time by John Buscema (though Hour of the Dragon was was drawn by Gil Kane). Of course, this was for the regular comic. Savage Sword of Conan had a number of artists work on it during it's time.

Games drive the hardware sales, if the game has a compelling story and brilliant visuals, people will upgrade.

I'm not supporting AoC in any way, shape or form. I've seen the beta gameplay, I've seen the screen shots, I've seen the videos. It's broken for a lot of current computer configurations, from what I've read on forums.

WoW is just one stepping stone in the pond of MMO history, not all conclusions should be drawn from that pool.

I was hoping this might be the MMO that got me interested in MMO's with a decent combat system - hell even just something I would call a combat system. But I don't find anything revolutionary about something that looks like it plays like Hexen II from years back. The whole defence focus thing with associated crappy special effect just seemed desperate.

Wake me up when they make something really worth looking at.

After leaving WoW two years, I haven't touched any MMO.

Seeing how I was randomly chosen from a affiliated website back in the day in a beta spot. I took it for a whirl.

The release is in two weeks, the state of the game now is the same when Vanguard gave everyone a flying mount a week before release.

Full of bugs and they still can't get rid of their Funcomitis launcher working.

Yes I know its beta, but I don't see how they can turn it around in 4 days.

I would suggest you avoid it.

I was expecting it to be real time combat, where one mistake could mean a beheading or getting your arm chopped off. That's the impression I've been getting from the devs this whole time. Real-Time, cutthroat combat.

Instead, it looks like we'll be getting a battle system the same as all the others with HP and all, but with a tacky/annoying attack system (no targeting in a MMO?) and fancy finishing moves (if that!).

I was really hoping I'd be able to chop through minions, to behead players on the first blow due to them not knowing how to block well enough, etc...

Imo, this game now looks "meh".

That, more than anything, is key to WoW's success. They set the hardware bar very low and haven't moved it. That has been key in keeping subscriptions over time and getting subscriptions in less affluent markets that can't upgrade every other year (or more often).

But, in order to make it work, they had to have brilliant art direction to pull off the low poly count in style -- Warcraft's cartoony style and great (if not high on originality) art staff pulled it off.

I was in the PVP beta and I thought AOC lives up to the hype, is way more interesting than WOW, and has no more technical issues than LOTRO.

Alot of the people who were having technical issues had older PCs and they were trying to force the game to run on hardware that can't handle it.

in all honesty it's like that with all PC games not just MMO's. Because games have to include the lower ends of the technology in mind when making their game, pc games will never reach their full potential and still be commercial successes.

This game seems pretty cool. I'm currently playing the beta. It's not running very well on my computer though (only an amd 3500 single core, 2 gig ram and a 7800 GTX =(). It's been quite a while since I've upgraded my pc but honestly I have so little time for games that I don't even really play them much on my pc anymore.

I haven't really figured out the whole attacking from different directions and if it really makes a difference (for me so far I've just been hitting them someone randomly but I'm also a ranger so I'm generally using my bow) but I'm curious how things would play out if I was playing a melee class.

Either way I'm holding off for warhammer.
