With regards to their portable strategy it has always seemed to focus on the functionality as a portable over actual performance. However even off the shelf parts are now offering capable CPU and GPU performance with a focus on low power overheads.

I think Sony has shown that bleeding edge, ground up chip designs, take too long and cost too much for little actual gain. I doubt any new console will to do that perhaps tweak existing chips.

Huh? My point is entirely that Nintendo have consistently introduced and focused on new ways to interact with games over MS and Sony who have improved the capabilities to play more intricate and detailed games.

I guess you could say Nintendo innovate from the outside-in and MS/Sony the inside-out.

However, given the fact that they have proven the naysayers wrong by innovating is this manner. It would be nice to reap some of those inside-out improvements in a new handheld or console.

The reason why I said a DS re-design is a given is because Nitnendo traditionally launches new revisions when sales slow down. There's no time better than this year since the PSP is actually a competition now unlike previous years.

Basically everything is a world of difference from the PS2. Even the controller (aside from button layout which I'm glad they didn't screw around with) is completely different: motion controls, wireless, rechargeable, lighter... I see your point, but the Wii is much closer to the GC overall than the PS3 is to the PS2. Nintendo did change a lot, but the comparison is still not fair.

Given the PSPs rise to the top following the redesign I do wonder if they'll not follow suit with the PS3 once they have some AAA titles lines up to back up such a push.

Nice to see those Wii sales keep ploughing on. Every big week of Wii sales I see as a swift kick in the nuts for those who'd leave gaming to stagnate in hardware rehases and vacuous hype.

The DS isn't slowing down in case you didn't know that 52000 is a large number. The PSP is simply selling very well, better than it has ever before. Which has more to do with a new model and games than too many DS's being sold.

Not just Monster Hunter, but Crisis Core a while back, too. In fact, with the launch of that and the new PSP model, that's when PSP sales really picked up. And it's been going pretty steady since then.
However, the PSP currently stands at about 8.5 million units sold in Japan. Even at the current rate, it'd take a long, long time for the Japanese PSP install base to match that of the DS.

Crazy how we use to feel so sorry for the "also ran" PSP. The PS3 should be getting a huge spike next month, so no worries there. Nintendo won this war and there's no way PSP will catch up, unless this handheld gen lasts another good 5 years, and even then... It was still very successful for Sony though and they fully penetrated the 14-30 market they aimed at. Next gen should be very interesting... Wonder if MS or Apple will join the party.
