I think a lot of people looked at the cover of Beyond Good and Evil and thought 'tomb raider rip-off' due to Jade wearing a sort of similar outfit.

I also think that the way it was advertised a lot of people thought it was just some photo taking game a la Pokemon Snap.

Loved the first one to death. I remember I got it at the same time I got Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, and that's what pushed my love for games over the edge and brought me into this industry.

My girlfriend and I saw this less than a month after it had launched for $20 new. I had not seen any advertising and only heard little about it. We figured for $20 it be worth it and after playing it I knew I would have payed $50 for it and would buy ANY BG&E sequel on release. Ubisoft really dropped the ball on supporting the launch of this title as I have gamer friends that never even heard of this game until I told them.
If they were to release a decent remake of the original for Wii I would certainly buy it in addition to the sequel and could use it to promote the new game.
My point is that Ubisoft wants to redeem itself in my eyes, they better release the sequel.

I bought BG&E used after practically the entire internet ranted about how great and underappreciated it is, but I was really disappointed. It had its moments, but I think it was one of those overrated, but still good games, like Secret of Mana or Rez, that everyone demands a sequel to. I didn't give a crap enough to try and kill the end boss again after I died once on it. Maybe this one will be better.

@russtophiles: You're saying "Zelda clone" as if we had a dozen of these each day. We don't. Apart from Zelda itself, Okami, and, uhm... well... Star Fox Adventures? I guess there are a few other almost-Zelda-like games... But apart from these few games, Zelda clones are rare.

And BG&E was an extremely well-done Zelda clone, and it was released on a few non-Nintendo consoles. So naturally, people loved it. If you owned an Xbox, getting a game like BG&E is an even rarer occurence than it was on other consoles.

Even if there were a ton of Zelda clones, complaining about BG&E being one would be a bit like complaining that Halo 3 was a Doom clone. Sure, the gameplay is similar, but there are enough differences to make each of these game unique, and they're good enough to deserve a top spot even if their gameplay isn't totally unique. And, again, there are very few Zelda clones to begin with, unlike "Doom clones."

So proclaiming that BG&E wasn't that great because it was a Zelda clone is kind of a weird thing to do. It's a great game, it has fantastic character design, interesting puzzles, awesome gameplay, very pretty graphics, a solid storyline, and it's in a genre which gets very little love nowadays. This is why it's such a cult classic. Really, what's not to like?

and those of you criticizing the story because it's been done before seem to be missing the point. Just because it's been done before doesn't necessarily detract from the value of the story...besides, the characters, the world, and just the general atmosphere made this game better than a lot of the crap out there. Sure you can take the easy way out and point to Jak or R & C as similar games but B G & E was different. It didn't use the adolescent humor of Jak, and the mindless level grinding of R & C to force you through the game...the story and *mainly* the characters compelled you through it. Yeah the story's been done before...but I challenge any of you to find better developed characters.

This is, simply put, the BEST/WORST story that I've ever read on Kotaku.

Not only does it let us know that the unannounced sequel that I want more than any other (Shenmue 3 and Panzer Dragoon Saga II are behind it) actually exist, but then it kills it by saying its been in PRE-production for a year with only 10-12 people AND it hasn't officially been green-lit or put into full production. So that means that IF it does get full production, we are still likely YEARS from seeing it. The recently blog-deceased Surfergirl pretty much said the same thing, but I didn't want to believe her. Now I hurt inside.

Maybe its up to us as gamers, now, to truly let Ubisoft know how committed we are as gamers to this happening. Heck, I'd plunk down my $60 RIGHT NOW if they were taking pre-orders. This really needs to happen.

Although I enjoyed BG&E a good deal, I hardly feel like it was this 'so amazing great pinnacle of gaming' that many people make it out to be. It's a Zelda clone with a few extra things like picture taking and hovercraft driving thrown in and a very likable main character. Enough to be be a good game that sold way less than it should have, but certainly not the second coming of the action adventure genre. The story was the same lame 'evil empire' premise that 'epic' platformer games of last gen used to death, especially the Jak series, which I think was it's greatest weakness.

It is neat to see it potentially continuing though, in a gaming landscape where there's less room for risk on new or failed IP it's pretty surprising when some franchises get resurrected like this might.

It'd be a sin not to make BGE 2 after that cliff-hanger on the last one.

For me, BGE was like a zelda game, but with a much better story and slightly worse gameplay.

Michel Ancel and Hideo Kojima have got to be the only geniuses in the gaming world not to sell out. And good on Michel, he could have made 20 ubi sequels in the past 4 years but he stuck ot his guns! Good man!

And as we have seen time and time and time again just because lots of people on the internet are clamouring for it doesn't mean it will sell. E.g. Snakes on a plane, Okami, Nights Sequel etc etc

Would be a very strange move to make it. Only way I can see them doing it is if they basically ignore the first game (which seeing as how almost no one played it wouldn't be hard). Then just market it as a new game. Make it for Wii, lower costs, not a huge amount of epic games to compete with. Or if they want to keep it attached to the old game they could even include the original game on the same disc. But please no advertisements with the line ''Like zelda for grown ups'' again -_- quite a few people I know didn't buy the game because they felt insulted by that.

Dude, timing. I finally tracked down a Gamecube copy for my Wii last week so I could replay it and have my wife (a photographer) get into it. I've been singing it's praise to her for years.

My PC discs were scratched so every time I beat the last boss the ending skipped.

I was a late comer to PS2 games, so I just got my hands on this gem a few weeks back, and so far, it is easily my 3rd favorite game of all time. This is indeed a sequel that needs to be made. It would easily be a day 1 purchase assuming the core team from the 1st Beyond Good and Evil is there.

I enjoyed the first game, but I thought it ended way too abruptly. Once the story really got started, it seemed like it was over just like that. Here's hoping the sequal gets green-lighted AND has a great story like the first AND is a bit longer than the first. It doesn't have to be like 100 hours long, just make sure it's "long enough".

A new Beyond Good and Evil would do more than just sell well in a perfect world.It would make game designers wake up and realise that every games doesn't have to be yet ANOTHER FPS or cheapo Wii game, it could be the start of some REAL innovative and interesting titles for all systems! Beyond Good and Evil is a great game that simply sold like ass. The week after release I bought it for $10 from Best Buy; and that wasn't an anomaly. If a game sheds $40 in 7 days something is wrong. A great game that sadly wasn't appreciated when the numbers would count, if in fact interest has even changed enough to warrant a sequel. A follow-up is well overdue.

If I were a rich man, I would single handedly finance this production. Beyond Good and Evil is the true gem of last generation, and the trilogy deserved to get made. If Ubisoft can't find the coppers to fund this game out of the profits they presumably make, then there is little hope for truly unique and intelligent gaming on a decent budget scale.

Make this happen. While other games undeservedly get endless sequels, this has yet to recieve that honour.

@spiderweb1986: I think the bigger fault was with the distribution at the time. The original release coincided with two other established franchises releasing new titles (I don't remember both, but one was PoP Sands of Time). On a budget, people had to pick which one they were interested in--and in such a situation, franchises generally win out.

I can't really blame Ubi. I give them credit for indulging Ancel by giving him a staff and a year to put a sequel into pre-production.

The first game bombed, so greenlighting a sequel to a game no one played would be a huge risk.

Hopefully what Ancel has put together so far is enough to convince Ubi to put it into full production.

@Antiterra: Building off of your comment, one of the main problems the game had is that it dropped in price ridiculously quickly. Within two or three months, it wasn't too hard to find a copy for $20 or $30, and it wasn't too long after that before it dropped further. $15...$10...$5...

Good timing, too--I'm trying to get my girlfriend into gaming, so I showed her BG&E on the PS2. She was floored (of course) and wanted a copy, but she only has a Gamecube--and NOBODY has the GC version in stock anymore. I managed to come across a copy in a local used game place yesterday, I'm gonna surprise her with it later today :)

Any word on what system this'll be on? I'd bet on Wii, but I'd love to see how this visual style works in Hi-Def.

@karasu is my homeboy: The problem with the "Awesome game no one played" badge is that it mostly moves used copies - months and even years after release -, instead of new copies that would increase total sales. And those word-of-mouth sales occur too long after release.

Like cordsie said, if you don't "sell 300,000,000 copies in the first 4 seconds"...

I have no idea how much the first BG+E ended up selling to date, after the initial disappointing sales and then the hype that created what I'd imagine to be a sales spike once it earned it's "Awesome game no one played" badge.

However, if it wasn't enough copies, then it's obvious why they aren't green lighting it.

I thought BG+E was a nice game, and it incporated elements of plenty of great titles together into a fun blend of conspiracy action. I wouldn't rush to buy the game day 1, though. I'd probably wait a couple months.

I too picked up the game after the amazing initial reviews and believe me, they were warranted. The world, the voice acting, the story...EVERYTHING was top notch.

It was a damn shame that it did not get the sales that it deserved but I'm glad that the creators of the game aren't going to let anyone stop them from seeing their baby all the way through. For that alone, gamers should pick up their next game. These aren't devs that are working on some sort of tired concept or a quick movie cash-in. These guys are passionate about their work and it showed in the first title and I'm sure it'll show in the sequel.

@Nemesis_2015: No-one said the game was perfect. Yes the stealth aspect felt kinda tacked on and tiresome, and the camera was awkward, but damn I know I'm not alone when I say I want to go back to Hylis again.

That world was the most well-realized, charming and downright fun sci-fi worlds I've had the pleasure to play in in recent years.

in europe ubisoft killed the game by releasing the xbox and gamecube versions 6 months after the ps2 version's release (thanks to a time-exclusive-deal with sony) with no PR (thanks to the ubidorks). weeks later they cried because nobody bought the game...

ps: the game is rather overrated. the camerawas ok at best and the stealth felt forced.

I still cannot for the life of me understand why the first game didn't sell.
It had everything: story, characters, gameplay, good justified mini-games, variety, an interesting gameworld, graphics.
And it wasn't a particularly conceptual or inaccessible game... Why the hell didn't people buy it?!
(Calm down, calm down...)

I played it at the same time as PoP: The Sands Of Time (finished in a day, never looked back).
There is no doubt in my mind as to which is the (vastly) superior game, yet PoP is the one getting sequels and remakes.

...Great, now I want to play BG&E again.

Because BG+E didn't exactly smash any sales records when it was released, despite the critical acclaim. They didn't exactly push it all that hard marketing wise, and since it didn't sell 300,000,000 copies in the first 4 seconds, it was labelled a FAILURE.

I think the critical acclaim came well after the fact, slowly building up over time via word of intermouth. I'd never heard of it until a good couple of years after its release, and only after reading some crowing about how good it was on a few adventure game-specific sites. Fallout kind of followed the same path, and well, you might have heard about a follow up to that being developed :P

BGE has had a strong and steady following, and the second would probably sell better than the first on the back of that, so hopefully there will be a viable case for ubisoft to pump money into it.

The first game was fantastic, the game world was extremely immersive. It definitely does deserve a sequel.
