@BigChiefSmokem: Floor intake was not very good. Those fans come from an Antec 900. Instead I now have 3 intake fans in the front of the case, using the two fan boxes from the antec 900. My Temp inside the case is the same as the air going in. If you mean CPU CORE TEMPS idle about 14c above room temp. AT 100% load on all 4 cores about 65c ish. While playing games its around 50c so I'm all good. And Klipsch FTW! I had them for 4 years now so these things are well broken in and sound awesome. I got a X-fi Fatality for about 50 bucks at frys so in running off that now. I dont hear a difference outside of EAX HD games so I would still recommend the AC-1 if you can find it for less than the X-fi

sovietspartan

There really is no excuse not to get the 2160 and overclock it to 3.0ghz. Duel Core 3.0ghz for $60? Heck yeah! Those waiting for duel cores to come down are clearly uninformed (note, reaching 3.0ghz may require decent cooling from your computer case).

I've been a fullscreen display user, but I ordered a widescreen display that's coming in Wednesday. The widescreen shift is going to be a slow one because the past screens were made to last so long, and frankly there's little to complain about with good CRTs (besides energy use and retina burning).

CyberGlitch

One thing looking at the age of the video cards and processors I would think that most of these systems were built pre-vista. I have never known too many gamers to purchase a new OS with out refreshing there hardware at the same time. Vistas market share will increase as it is tied to new hardware sales (or so i think).

creet

Aside from that, a lot of their polls seem limited. As serotoninzero said above, they only went to 250GB on HDDs and only 2GB on RAM.

Blah8

I just got a widescreen monitor. I played a little TF2 on it in 1024x768 windowed mode, because I still had a sad 7300 in there, which got about 1.5 fps in 1680x1050.

So maybe that sort of thing is a factor in those widescreen folks running weird resolutions?

About 2 hours later I picked up a 9600GT, joining the ranks of gamers who can crank all video settings up to max. Whoo!

Crashproof

@Plakband:

1280x960 IS a 4:3 resolution.

640/480 = 1.3
1280/960 = 1.3

I'm running widescreen. On a PC, that's 16:10. My screen's native resolution is 1920x1200.

1920/1200 = 1.6

[4:3]
800 x 600	29,542	1.71%
1024 x 768	553,497	32.02%
1152 x 864	89,339	5.17%
1280 x 960	677,282	39.18%
1600 x 1200	28,026	1.62%

Total = 79.7%

[16:10]
1440 x 900	129,912	7.52%
1680 x 1050	157,450	9.11%
1920 x 1200	39,543	2.29%

Total = 18.92

Total for both = 98.62

Now combine that with the other statisics for screen aspect ratio:

4:3 = 73.87% of Total
16:10 = 25.70% of Total

And we can see that a little over 6% of widescreen users are running their screens at 4:3 resolutions.

Elliuotatar

I'm not surprised to see over 60% of people using single core processors and less than 2 gigs of ram, with 40% using video cards incompatible with Shader Model 3.0.

@foxhound009: Yeah, just a few more upgrades, such as motherboard, processor, ram, power supply, as well as the video card.

@jp182: I'm in about the same situation as your friend. Until a game comes out that interests me, which would be something other than a ridiculous FPS, I have no need to upgrade. The only thing that upsets me is my X800's lack of ability to display Shader Model 3.0+, meaning many new games are simply impossible to render. Fortunately, many new games are uninteresting to me.

In fact, I think my newest games are from Steam! Aside from the Orange Box, my games are pretty aged...
Starcraft, Warcraft 3, Max Payne 2, Star Wars - JKII: Jedi Academy, Battlefield 1942, Thief 3, and I would have the original Call of Duty, but I don't have the CDs with me in this apartment.

As for reliability, I've seen no difference. Vista BSOD's when it feels like it, just like XP. IF Vista didn't come with the laptop I'd skip it and wait for the next windows version.

noboard

@Ouzak: People running 16:9 resolution rates on a 4:3 monitor is possible, and it wouldn't be the most stupid thing I've ever seen done (but it's pretty high up there).

That is actually wrong, you can display any resolution on your monitor below the max resolution your monitor supports as long as its a CRT monitor. All you have to do is squish the image until it matches the specific resolution you want to use. If you can tolerate having a smaller wide-screen resolution squishing it in the monitors setup menu, you have no need to upgrade to a monitor built specifically as a wide-screen monitor. In fact, I'm actually using my 19" 4:3 CRT to play GTA 4 at 1280x720 and it works just fine. There is only one exception to this. If the game you are playing doesn't support wide-screen resolutions natively (Battlefield 2 on PC is an example) the game will look like you are looking through a fish bowl sort of.

Jabberslops

I don't recognise the cooler on the graphics card but presumably the red PCB means it's an ATI of some sort. Given that it's a dual slot card has it had an aftermarket cooler added? With a 6-pin power cable is it something from the x1900 range?

Are people just using strange resolutions not suited to their displays?

xRiOT

You may lose a few FPS (5 at most), but with a healthy gaming rig you shouldn't even notice.

The low amount of wide screen isn't odd as well. I'm using a perfectly good 19" 4:3 display. Sure, widescreen displays are available everywhere nowadays but where does this idea come from that I should just dump my current screen for a wide version? I rather wait till this one breaks. Then I'll upgrade.

StormdragonBlue
