That is fucking insanity that your launch 360 still works. You either never play it or only play it with it in a mini fridge.
My launch 360 broke within the first week and my second one broke last September. (about a week before Halo 3, thank god it sucked). My third is a little over a half year old and has an extra 2 years of full insurance bought. I had to pay for the 2nd one to be fixed since the GPU crapped out and their was no red ring. The 3 year warranty is like what car makers do by advertising a ten year warrant but only covering the whole car for 3-5 years and only the transmission gets 10 years.
Bull.Shit.

mferrari

Excuse me if I missed whether you identified the model, I'm drinking, but if it's NA or Japan 60GB model I think the $150 is probably worth it. I find most mass produced electronics to be junk when they come off the assembly line. In every case of having something repaired (or even getting a refurbished one) it has resulted in increased durability with the device in question.

All the same it sucks, a lot. It also feel way too familiar to the PS2 disc read problem. Hopefully this issues doesn't expand beyond a small percentage. I'd be a lot more pissed if it was another model (except 20GB). Something about having convinced myself the high price of that model is alright.

Alright, time to shut it.

Replica23

you weren't refering to my ps3 wireless error were ya?

well i didn't write the number down, and it doesn't do it all the time.

don't understand it. but it seems to be causing issues with my laptop also, cause sometimes my laptop won't connect to the net, but everything locally works. when i turn off the ps3, the laptop will connect fine.

i've got all the following devices setup in my living room, all connect wirelessly to my router:

1 wii
1 ps3
1 360
1 alienware m9750 laptop
1 iphone
1 nintendo ds
1 psp

and the following devices are connected wirelessly to my router elsewhere in the house:

1 dell laptop (wifes)
1 acer laptop (daughters)
1 nintendo ds (daughters)
1 psp (daughters)

after turning each one off and retesting each time, it was the ps3 causing my various wireless issues. i think i'm just gonna run a gigabit cable and router to my entertainment center to connect my consoles directly to my router....

oh well, i'll write down that ps3 error next time it happens.

I had a cousin that had this issue. They told them it was the firmware that was the cause. They had told them to upgrade firemare but they didn't have internet so they brought it over. I did some googles on the issue and there were a few cases of this on systems like he had the 40 GIG model. Defitely not on the scale of the RROD but is effecting some people but the moving parts on anything are the most likely to fail.

Konchu

They were really cool about the proof of purchase thing; my mom actually bought it on a check (lost the copy and receipt) using my wife's target discount card.

I think it is funny that you ALWAYS hear about broken PS3's, but broken 360's are taken as a matter of course. It sucks when your shit breaks, no matter what console it is.

Luckily for PS3 owners, the rate is less than 2%. And luckily for 360 owners, there is a 3 year warranty.

Both companies go about doing things in different ways. While Sony released a generally reliable piece of hardware, they gave it only a 1 year warranty (for that exact reason... it is generally reliable), whereas MS released an unreliable machine and extended the warranty instead of fixing the problem. Personally, I'd just as soon never deal with MS's customer service (you'd think it would be better with all of the practice they're getting), so I prefer Sony's method.

I'm sorry to hear about your inconvenience. Hopefully you get it back in a timely fashion.

NoMoreTrolls

@string_theory:

Sony moved to 1 year warranty for the PS3 from day one, well before MS. It used to be 90 days for the 360 and every console except for Nintendo ones before it.

If the console's defect rate is within acceptable standards, why would they offer 3 years? It costs money, and lots of it.

@SAKY:

Is there such a thing as MDF, because you fit the profile. Applaud MS? It took months and months of denial, with Moore and others dismissing it as normal. Then when a huge mass media blitz hit, it took them about a month to come clean. That was at a cool cost of $1 billion.

Given the media blitz and retailer reactions in NA (some ceasing extended waranties etc.), the 360 issue seems more widespread. Or did retailers have a hidden agenda?

SG79

You made me laugh so hard that I cried. Thanks. I needed that.

As for myself, I'm rather lucky. I haven't had my XBox red ring and I've never had problems with my PS3, both of which I got at about the same time (two months prior to the PS3 launch for the 360 and 2 weeks after the launch for the PS3). So far, both have lasted longer than my original XBox, which committed suicide after 1.5 years, or (in a way) my PS2, which I've had to adjust the lens for several times.

Something like this happened to me,I have a launch PS3 60gb. the system was working fine, then the system told me I need to update to the latest firmware,I only updated because if you don't it will no longer let you into the online store, so I did, after doing so,my system stopped reading game, playing movies etc. only thing it will let you do now is cut it on,and after about five min it will just freeze.I understand that it's out of warranty but if it's working before the update, and stops after then Sony should have to fix or replace it with no charge to the consumer. and they never offered to sell us a extended warranty ,I got mine from Target the launch day,I was first in line, and they did offer one either. My Xbox 360 got one,Micros Wii oft offered it to me,we are on our second 360 and as fare as for the Nintendo Wii they fail a lot, We are on our fourth, sometime it would not eject disk or read games etc.

iphone5683

My PS3 suffered a power failure of some sort just about two months ago. I called support - I forget the guy's name but he was super awesome and very helpful - and they determined that I needed a replacement. They shipped one off and I got it about a week's time - and I didn't have to pay a penny because I was within warranty.

Oh wow, I sound like a paid ad-man or something. Seriously though, I was thoroughly relieved by how smooth everything went considering how neurotic I can get and how much money I spent on the blasted thing. Commiserations to those at the other end of the stick.

imgoingtomakeyoubald

I still don't see your point. If it's more reliable that should be MORE reason for them to match the 360s warranty.

If it will never fail, what does Sony lose by matching the 3 year warranty?

Would you buy a toyota over a chevy if the toyota came with a 1 month warranty?

The fact is, Sony had a history of only offering 30 day warranties until the industry moved to 1 year warranties then eventually they did as well when consumers began expecting it. (though they still have some kinks like only a 90 day labor warranty for cameras & things like batteries for notebooks still have 30 day warranties even though the laptop itself is a year)

Again, if the product is reliable there should be no problem with them matching the warranty length. They should do it; parts, labor & shipping.

string_theory

Just connect an external USB drive (make sure it's FAT32) and go to Settings->System Settings->Backup Utility->Back Up. This will copy everything on your machine, including users, DLC, virtual Memory Cards, etc.

When you get your refurb back from Sony, simply reconnect the external drive and go to Settings->System Settings->Backup Utility->Restore. You'll have your "old" PS3 before you know it.

You're the 2nd person I know who thinks that the BC is poor, and it is. The image may be fine for the most part (crushed blacks and better scaling at the cost of detail), but the audio is quite poor. Even via the Toslink, it's muted and even legacy PL or PLII doesn't sound good.

This type of problem is all over the internet...PS3 blu ray drives crapping out do not seem to be a rare incident.

It's basically the PS3's version of RRoD--it does not affect as many consoles as with the 360 but it's common enough for you to easily find it while browsing online forums such as NeoGaf. I was looking up info about the new GTA IV patch and there were a few users on that thread who had their blu ray drives crap out on them around the time GTA IV launched.

It seems though you can send your PS3 to Sony to get it fixed(much like the 360 and MS) so you wont need to buy a new console or anything like that.

fenderfuel08

Using that 30% figure often I see; regardless of what product it's for, it's a bogus figure. If a product reaches that disastrous level, it would be required to be pulled off shelves. Industry standard for consumer electronics is 2-3% maximum. Do the math given the user base, and if 3%, that's still quite a number of PS3's and Wii's defective.

It's still debatable that the PS2 DRE issue was nowhere as widespread as the PROD issue. Sony did end up offering free repairs for those models until 2004, so we know that it was above industry standard. Of course, the threat of suits is what prompted that much like MS.

SG79

Microsoft fixed my brothers 360, which was out of warranty and not red ringed for $15...Why is Sony charging $150 for repairs that could be as simple as cleaning dust off a lense and take like 5 minutes to fix? Shouldn't it be a "we could fix it, but so and so is broke and will cost $x, do you want to pay it?" and have variable costs for what's broke and amax of $150?

Also, someone claimed the Wii and PS3 have a 1% failure rate above. I can only laugh at that with how many DRE's Sony's consoles (all of them) get and the Wii's inability to read dual layer DVDs due to "dust and smoke". PS2 had a 30% or more failure rate on launch models, but Sony denied it and blamed users for the DREs and thus, the failure rate does not go up due to their "tests" proving otherwise. Same for the Wii and PS3s this gen. They're not 30% or anythign drastic, but they're higher than they should be.

KirbyMorph

I am on my third 360 (only one hardware failure, gave the replacement to a friend when I got an elite for extra blackness), and out of everyone at my work (a games retailer with ~30 employees, most of whom have 360's) only one other person has had a hardware problem compared to my friends 4 ps3's and 2 other guys at works ps3's dying.

Kotaku, I want a survey of some kind! Though I suppose it will just end up with people from all sides of the fanboyism quadrilateral (Sega still counts, damn you) lying. So...never mind.

DarrenIndeed

I had a problem with my PS3 60GB(UK ver.) about a week and some days ago, the entire thing just stopped working, giving me the flashing red light error. I had a heart attack, as this was the day before my GTA4 copy was scheduled to arrive.

The thing is though, I loved the Sony customer support, I had expected to be tossed around and transferred for hours, as my 60GB version has been discontinued in the UK. Except, when I called them, they told me that the problem had been noticed before in some systems (rarely occurs) and that they would send out a rebuilt brand new 60GB PS3 to my house within 2 days.

That's exactly what happened, 2 days later a guy knocks on my door, hands me a brand new PS3, and takes my old one away. No questions asked, no checking for what the fault is, no hassle, and absolutely no cost. I loved them for it.

Compare that to when my X360 had to be shipped back (4 times) to M$ each time lasting 2-3 weeks for the Red Ring of Death.

Acklan

My buddy has had the worst luck with next-gen consoles. His 360 was DOA because it was rendering random red and green lights in games. His Wii was turned into a brick by a system update, messing up his 30-hour Zelda file. And his PS3 had a strange love of eating his PS2 saves. He lost a 40-hour FF12 save and another not-as-lengthy save of another game I can't remember.

Bishmon

I'm on my second 60GB PS3 but it was do to a faulty HDMI/graphics issue yes this was a wiered support call as well. Luckly for me it was only after one week from purchase so it was replaced for free under warranty. Once I got it back it has been problem free. I am glad I got mine while the 60GB systems were in full swing. I dread the day my 60GB dies since there aren't anymore to replace it and if fixed I would have to prey that my system wouldn't be switched for a less capable system (40GB/80GB)...!

JorgieX

Hmmm, that doesn't make too much sense... Maybe the blue laser died. That's very sad, and slightly worrying. I hope my PS3 doesn't die... then again I've been relatively lucky with hardware problems, as I tend to be in the group of people without them.

The Red Comet

Of course I broke the eject mechanism in the process, but it still functions!

Mike Fahey

PS3, 360, we're all gamers, and its tragic when they die. It's like cats and dogs. I just hope this doesn't turn into one of those 'your dog died! hahahaha' comment sections.

ca$h
