@homernoy: Small fee? Comcast houston charges $7.95 and $5.95 for a HD on demand movie. I get a few free from my premium channels on demand, but the other day I wanted to watch two new releases I didn't have time to go pick up and realized renting both on demand cost me half of what one on Blu-Ray cost....in fact, the other day they had recent releases [and good ones...Simpsons..ID4..I Robot..Live Free/Die Hard] for $14 at Fry's..much cheaper than the renting.

$8.99 a month, a fair alternative versus cable and satellite TV.

Microsoft has made a lot of mistakes with Vista, but myself being an Ubuntu/OS X lover, even I can admit they've done a great job with digital entertainment convergence on Media Center.

I run a dedicated Vista Media Center server feeding extenders and 360s throughout the house and this software is something I've been waiting on for a while. Quality isn't so bad that it takes away from the experience that much. Nicely done. Once it gets more stable, it should be downright fantastic.

I had Vista. I wiped it out and installed XP instead, because Vista is a load of crap. A lot of my old PC games, and drivers don't work on it. I am very happy with XP the way it is, even if that means I can't play Halo 2 on the PC.

Nice feature :D Luckily my new Inspirion 1525 (REALLY REALLLY GREEEAAAT COMPUTER) came with Vista Premium. I used vista basic before hand, it was meh, but the Media Center on this vista is AWESOME! I may also put Linux on, but not much fun with media with linux. I have a 360 and netflix account also, just have to fix my xbox live. And fanboys, shut up. I hate fanboy arguments, just like everyone else.

Cool, definitely going to give this a whirl when I get back home. While I could just plug the PC into the HDTV, floor space and outlets in that area are both scarce and precious, nice having the PC in another room along with its various peripherals.

Random vista question: Is there a decent, cheap/free, cross-platform VNC option for it? I'd really like to be able to VNC from my iBook to the PC, for stuff like setting up individual encoding tasks on videos and such from my couch.

Further, if I upgrade to Vista Ultimate can I use that VNC service on the Mac?

Basic

Premium and Ultimate have Media Center built-in which is required for this. Yes they are the Home editions.

The instant movie collection is in addition to the discs, so you always have something to watch. Instead of requesting TV shows for instance you can just play them instantly online. This way your queue can be saved for movies that are not available instantly.

My God, bluray, BR discs provide a superior cinematic experience than a beta plug-in for streaming movies? We had no idea! How very astute of you to point that out. I just don't understand why, as long as you're providing us all with such a useful education, you didn't go further. I'm sure many of us need to be told that, say, driving cars can often get you places faster than walking can.

I'm glad to hear you prefer discs, xkotaku. Be comforted by the fact that everybody here almost certainly feels the same as you. You are, however, kinda missing the point. If you have a DVD, it will beat a streaming movie hands-down. If. Say, for example, you wish to marathon-watch the first season of Dexter with a friend right now, but you don't want to wait to download the files off a torrent, and you can't get all the necessary discs right away from Netflix. Two days aren't much, but that doesn't help you for tonight, know what I mean?

This is not an arena to argue your respective preferences, you fools; this not some incendiary post. The only thing this article is noting is that a service like this, gimpy as she is, is really kinda handy. Maybe it's not really all that nice, and maybe it's got a few too many requirements for the common user to be anything but a nifty little utility, it's still pretty cool to have a full-fledged streaming movie service that doesn't force us to actively (other than the hardware) suckle at the MS teat. Whoopee-Doo and stuff.

No person in their right mind would buy blu-ray movies at current prices, when they can stream the same movies from Comcast (what I do) for a small fee. Also many high-def channels are free now. And just like the transition from B&W to color, this will someday be a long forgotten memory.

My wife works for MS, and is kind of hinting that she wants to get a 360. I already have a PS3 and a good gaming PC. I don't know why she wants to buy one; she hates me gaming on the PC and hogs the tv, so very little gaming on the PS3(when she's home;)). I won't stop her if she wants one of course.

@Mr.DuckSauce:Get with the times and get a grip. Don't listen to me. Go to the tech sites and get involved. You might see the your repeating other peoples bullshit when you talk about Vista. That OS is the best I have ever used. OSX a close seconed.

Yay, no more precariously balancing the laptop to only have the toddler take it out while spinning in circles(happened last weekend while watching Dexter).

Side note, Toshiba wanted $800 three months out of warranty, not covered by extended warranty, busted LCD, assholes. Gateway 6860 it is then and its 8800m gts owns the 7900m gtx of the Toshiba, so I can finally game on my laptop. Although, why anyone would game on a laptop I can't figure out, oh my balls are burning!

Pretty cool. I just signed up for Netflix last week and their streaming movie collection is pretty good, and the quality is nice as well. My TV is my Computer monitor (I have a samsung LCD tv/monitor) so I don't have any need for this plugin
