While I'm hopping some game developers hear our silent plead, you know, nowadays noone can trust the "holds so much potential" and "imagine what proper devs can do" argument anymore.

I don't own an iPhone but I was expecting maybe put my hands on the next generation... 3G and all.

But you know, several stuff like DS, Wii and other consoles have gimmicks that promised the same thing... they have something new with great potential for developers to create amazing different things, but most of them failed to deliver... at least to some degree.

Still yeah, that car game looks really nice...

Bokusatsu_Tenshi

@karmaghost: Yeah, those ABC keyboards drive me absolutely crazy. And since the iPhone has a built-in standard on-screen keyboard, there's really no excuse for creating a broken in-game keyboard.

L_K_M

Apple has sold about 6 million iPhones so far, plans to sell 10 million by the end of '08 (looks like they'll easily sell more than that), and is projected to sell 24 mio by the end of '09.

@karmaghost: Someone actually bothered to compare 12 key keyboard typing speeds against 39 key keyboard ones? You don't need to be genius to understand that if you have to hit one key up to 4 times to get the letter you want it's going to take eternity to type a message.

But yeah, iPhone. It has great potential for games where you either use the accelerometer or touching to manage one simple task at a time. Like steering in a racing game, or poking something. You just have to realise the interaction limitations and design the game for the device and there should be no problems.

@emuc64: From the looks of it the required tilt is really small, shouldn't be problem at all.

ara

Two things here:
1.) I don't understand why people continue to use ABC keyboards for text input. Studies have shown that even people unfamiliar with QWERTY keyboards (read: grandma/grandpa, toddlers) type faster or equally fast on a QWERTY, and those familiar with QWERTY type faster.

2.) If you must use tilting as a control method when a screen is connected to the controller, the image should stay stable, i.e. parallel (or perpendicular, depending on your point of reference) to the ground. It shouldn't move with the screen.

karmaghost

Hmm, with a little work I think early PS2 quality is not out of reach. That looked quite good for an indie game on a beta SDK. As for controls, landscape would've been much, much better. I can't see the controls being any worse than mario kart's tilt, what with them using the same technology. They should have a gas pedal icon and a brake icon, one under each finger.

labrats5

You speak truths. I'm in total agreement with you in regards to consolidating the amount of electronics I lug around with me daily.

Hm. I'm going to have to disagree with incredibilistic. Apple and Sony's business plans are so far beyond opposite, that something like that could NEVER happen. Now, Apple and Nintendo teaming up is a possibility. Now, me being a hardcore Apple fanboy, I'd love to see Sony taken over in the handheld market by something as trivial as a phone. Now before you think i'm crazy let me explain.
For a long, long time (well, since early 1996 when I got a playstation) I have been a Sony fanboy. I mean, FAN BOY. Sony tvs, vcrs, minidisc players, walk mans, stereos, car stereos, camcorders, digicams and consoles. Nothing Sony did was wrong, in my ignorant eyes.
Then they released this thing called the 'psp'- the biggest waste of $250 ever spent by anyone ever. Granted, i now LOVE my psp. But for no reasons sony has anything to do with. The homebrew society out there is the only reason that machine sold more than 1000 units. Then, when they have the nerve to charge me $600 for a ps3 that does no more than play fancy dvds, i've just about had enough from them.
Let Apple show them up at their own game with cheap, fun cell phone games and encourage outside and homebrew development.

End fanboy rant. I'm sorry

Ryan_Long

It is kind of stupid that they didn't go with a landscape display so that it feels a little more natural when controlling the game but then you can't see as far into the distance.

Then again, they could've just made the car smaller and zoomed back a bit so yeah, landscape would've been better.

I still say Apple and Sony should hook up and just take out both Nintendo and MS. Imagine an Apple powered PS4 and PSP2 that combines the best of the iPhone and the PSP.

Why is this game in portrait orientation? Shouldn't it be oriented in landscape/widescreen?

This also looks like an awesome way to drop your iPhone. The accelerometer use in a handheld game is cool, but it would work best with slow, fluid movements. Needing to turn on a dime is likely to cause countless iPhones to fly out of people's hands.

The real feature that needs to be perfected for iPhone games is its ability to recognize multiple contact points simultaneously. If Apple is smart (and I'm told they are), they need to make sure to offer tons of games which use this feature. You can be damn sure Nintendo will utilize multiple touch-point recognition in the next version of the DS.

Instant_Awesome

Media Convergence is a fantastic thing. I understand where you are coming from however, a master of 1 trade is always beter than a jack of all. But what if we could have a master of all trades? What if we could have a phone that can do what phones do now (Call, Camera) and yet, also play games really well?

Don't you want to have one less device that you have to chug around? It'd be great if we could, and opportunities like this, though mediocre at best, is just another hurdle for future iterations to improve on.

I've just never been a fan of phone games, regardless of what "platform" they're on. The idea of having to take into consideration whether or not something can play games, when it's not it's primary function, is just another hassle I would rather not deal with. Of course, it's great for people who already own something like this.

For me, If I want to play games, I'll buy a handheld; if I want to talk on the phone, I'll buy a phone.

This is obviously archaic thinking, with gadgets now boasting a multitude of new features that were generally not associated with the product in the past. So I'm definitely in the minority here. But, I would rather just have a gadget perform one function incredibly well, than have it attempt to perform 10 different ones subpar.

I guess my view on cell-phone gaming is: do we really want to play games on a system that is ill-equipped to accommodate them?

Digital-Moth

Yeah, this sounds like a great idea, however the Iphone wasn't made as a gaming devise. I modded mine and had the NES emulator and it played terrible. It looked great and it impressed a lot of people, but not fun to play on, so I never played it. For handheld gaming, I play my PSP or DS, it just feels right.

The fundamental problem with accelerometer controls on a device that also holds your screen is that it's attached. I think it's too hard to steer your car when the screen is rocking back and forth. I mean you can steer, but not see where your car is going unless you also move your head with the screen - and that's just silly. Graphics wise, it looks quite nice. I would have expected a horizontal layout to make it easier to hold and view the road, but that's just me.

Not to be a total pessimist, I must say that in certain applications (that marble game) the control works well.

emuc64

What does this mean for other traditional game genres on the Iphone? FPS games where the sylus blocks the players view? Doable, but "meh". If you want something like the technical fighting games you find on consoles, someone at Apple would have to make a definative controller attachment IMO and the same would probably be true for other genres. RTS and "casual" games could find a great home here though.

Still, the damn thing is $400. Yeah you get all the other great functionality plus games consolidated into one product but I have no interest in such an item. That is just my opinion. Now, if you give me a must have game title maybe I'd trade up phones.
