To be honest, I don't like random fanservice but the chun-li shower scene didn't actually bother me too much. It didn't drag on and kinda made some sense as if you're going to kill someone the two best times to get them is when they're doing bathroom activities or sleeping. It also leads on to the best fight scene in the whole anime =D

Both the Bashcraft and this entry link to the same interview but by the context of what's written in them it really dictates the type of comments people write. How many people who left comments even bothered to read the interview?

I'll repeat what I wrote in last night's article. If this movie can portray Chun-Li as a strong female character comparable to Ripley from Aliens then I'd consider this movie a success. Justin Marks said it best, no movie starring a sexualized leather wearing female lead has ever been taken seriously or have been good. Someone mentioned Tomb Raider and how it had a strong and sexual lead. I've only seen parts of the first movie so I can't pass judgement on whether that franchise is any good.

Tomb Raider movies did pretty well financially, and had lots of sexuality. Angelina Jolie is a convincing tough girl, she has that naturally dangerous look, strong womanly voice, killer body, and oh yeah- she can act. Angie was the PERFECT cast choice for Lara Croft, and is the only reason I still watch the poorly written TR movies. GOOD CASTING is very important for movies such as these.

Why this movie is going to fail- Kristin Kreuk is a terrible choice for chun li. She's a cute little lady, but there's nothing womanly or intimidating about her appearance or stage presence whatsoever. To see her try to act tough is hilarious.

This is the exact reason Catwoman did terribly- BAD CASTING. Aside from the race thing- Halle is NOT a strong, powerful actress. She's good with acting cute, ladylike, and fragile, not being a dangerous seductress. It's why she failed as Storm, too. Storm was a POWERFUL, COMMANDING, African queen. She was fucking royalty. She didn't ask the wind nicely to do as she pleased, she raised her powerful ass voice up and COMMANDED the wind to obey her orders. If it weren't for some other, very good casting choices (like Hugh Jackman for wolverine), it would've been really bad.

Well, there goes my rant. Get a good enough cast, even if they're all unknown actors, (like 300) and the movie will probably do well, even if the direction sucks.

Oh, and kickass action sequences, of course.

Seriously, people can't run around and whine about wanting a serious film adaptation, but in the same breath complain that a character - whom was never really exploited sexually in the games - to be seen as simple eye-candy, while still expecting her to be taken as a tough, ass-kicking Interpol agent. I've got no problem with fan-service, but as long as it isn't overt and detracting from the image your trying to establish for your character and story. I've seen far too many films that try to give a female protagonist the same depth and respect as a male protagonist, but inevitably has her become fodder for nocturnal emissions.

Pick and choose your battles people, this isn't a bad thing. Hell, if anything, could it mean that a writer is *gasp* actually trying to add characterization without using the T&A card to garner attention for a change? I can't say what this means for the overall quality of the film, but at least it's a good start.

It just looks really stupid when the enemy is waiting around for the heroine to deliver a punch, because she's so slow. Or he has to make hugely over-exaggerated movements because she's obviously not hitting with any force. That was the biggest problem with the movies he lists as bad.

Furthermore, this mistake has already been made on this movie. It's not like there aren't a good number of female Chinese action stars.

The story _needs_ them to be objects. Why they work is that they are never really sexually objectified. They are both attractive and yeah, as kids we might've found the scene with Marion in a dress as kind of hot, but that's not "shower scene" objectified by any stretch.

Ripley is an interesting point. I think part of the point there was her still being sexual. A woman in all possible ways. Thats something the whole trilogy plays with, though not all that well. That said, I never found that scene exciting in any way as I was already way too vested in her as tough and almost un-womanly. For me, that scene probably _didn't_ work like it was meant to. I don't think I bought her as a woman until Resurrection.

I was just wondering because I was certainly aroused somewhat by the scene when I first saw the movie (as a young lad) and many parodies exist such as Mad Magazine and SNL which make fun of how exploitative that particular part was. Sigourney was the SNL host and re-did that scene personally in the show. I mean, she really had no real reason to take off her clothes. I know what the guy is saying about those characters being strong and stuff, but bad example unless you want to forget about that scene. A better example would be Marion in the first Indy movie or Lois Lane in the Chris Reeve Superman movies although they are hardly fap-fodder actresses are they? Tomb Raider was popular as heck and Angelina was sure shown in that black bikini a lot. Although a soapy breasted shower scene certainly wouldnt have hurt box in my opinion. Look at Beowulf, shes pretty much nekkid in that. (I realize she isnt the main character of that movie however.) The most important aspect is whether there is a good script. If it isnt you can add naked chicks who cant act but who are popular to boost the movies sales. Like Barb Wire with Pam Anderson, that movie sucked, but did well financially because of them sexualizing Pam. Tank Girl which was better written and had a stronger lead female who wasnt shown naked in the flick did poorly. Kristen Kreuk is a born again Christian so she would be against a lot of sexy scenes being in the script. I doubt that this movie will contain less suck than either Catwoman or Elektra.
