Maybe the problem is just that EA Sports games come with shitty manuals and shitty tutorials. That's why I bought Madden 2007 and gave up on figuring it out. If Squenix can build a convoluted JRPG that I can figure out in ten minutes without even knowing the language, why the hell can't EA?

James in Dupont

@LaughingCrow: You're focusing too much on yourself, I think. I hate sports titles now too, and it's fairly obvious that regular gamers are getting bored of the same old shtick every year and have simply stopped purchasing games. EA sees this coming, so now they're shifting their demographic over a gaming generation, younger kids with Wiis (It's a fairly large demographic nowadays, y'know?) It's not about the realistic gameplay. That matter to US. Not to those who are next in line. Did Blitz 2000 appeal due to realism when I was 12 years old? No. It appealed to me cause I could bash the crap outta guys while mashing the A button. I didn't give to cartridges about realism.

They're not doing downloadable content because most parents and their 10 year olds don't know how to set up a modem.

We're becoming a suckier demographic for EA Sports by the month, and now they're doing something about it.

Krackatoa

@Krackatoa: We're talking about EA Sports here. They're real sports simulators, which already have millions and millions of fans worldwide. It's a 3D world they are already used to see. They only need to get used to the controller. That is it. Although I do own a NES, I started my gaming mostly with the first PlayStation. Heck, even my uncle picked that up quite quickly (untill he discovered weels and racing games). EA is just desperate to appeal to more possible customers. Which is kind of weird, since I don't spect the production costs to be too high, and my brother used to buy every FIFA game every year. He admited to me that the games did not differ that much version to version, and he ended up sticking to one of the previous versions cos he said in his opinion they screwed up in the gameplay somewhere along the line. I should ask him for details.

IMO EA is just moving to the Wii because, like sports, it is already exposed to a big enough audience. Plus, it's less production costs, it's a win-win. Well, I suposse buying licenss to use player names is EXPENSIVE and all that, so more sells and less production costs is the best for them. I always wonder why EA doesn't go with something like updates or downloadable content, that seems even more like a win for me.

I think EA Sports made a great pool when they started, with deep and shallow parts, but little by little they removed all the water, the people that were already in stayed, but people are afraid to enter because there is no water. To an "insider" the pool is great (maybe starting to become not so great), to an outsider like me (who doesn't like sports) or an outsider that likes sports but not video games, there is nothing appealing about it.

LaughingCrow

I don't see why people are getting so fussy about this. I had a few kids to entertain one night so I thought I'd set them up with an easy game since they didn't play much. So I handed them Smash Bros for the Wii, toted as a casual-party-beat'em'up that critics complained couldn't hold water to other fighters complexity wise.

They were completely befuddled by it.

They didn't understand the controls in the slightest. Remember when you were young and you had to pause before each action to check where the buttons were? Well, kids today still do that.

In swimming, you gotta give them some waterwings before they can tread water, let alone do laps of the pool. Some people just want to dip their feet in. Same goes for videogames. Hence the shallow end analogy. You're just being a douche because you think the pool should be reserved for "real swimmers". Well, the real pool's are over that way. *points to the PS3, 360 and PC*

I figure we got lucky when it came to learning curves in videogames. When I was young, I started out on the original Nintendo. Two buttons and a D-pad. TWO BUTTONS AND A D-PAD! So when EA tries to give the same experience but in a full-3D environment, you get angry over wasted resources and "shovelware".

Well screw you guys. I want to share my games with other people, kids and adults alike who haven't played games much before, there's no other console on the market that caters to that audience. That's why I got a Wii. If you want to go solo, do laps or play seriously, you have a mound of alternatives in front of you.

Like Onizuka-GTO said earlier, the only real crime here is overcharging for lower-budget games. Prices these days are out of control, with the price of games today, it's no wonder that the average game-library never extends outside of Wii-Sports and Wii-Play. Until that fixes itself, or until older titles get cheaper, these casual games aren't going to do as well as they could be doing.

your saying we should throw inexperienced peopel who can't swim into the deep end? sheesh. have fun fishing out the drowned bodies!

But, just because it's "shallow" doesn't mean it's boring, games don't have to be "deep" they can be "wide" and be just as fun.

best bit, you don't have to hold your breath or risk drowning when your too tired to tread water.

That is EXACTLY what casual games are, the shallow end, but the thing is everyone who is in the shallow end paid just as much money as the people in the full fledged pool which is why I HATE casual games.

The developers admit over and over again how casual these games are and hoe easy and fast and "shallow" they are but they still price them at $49.99 which is the price of a real fucking game.

ShareYourTreats

this casual bullshit is going too far. publishers are buying into it, and soon they will find that the market isnt as big as they think it is.

so your ea sports titles didnt do well on wii...that means you have to create a casual label? all i know is maybe if the ea sports games on wii were decent, they would have sold more. how about actually trying instead of porting ps2 games and callign them wii games? how about some IR, is that asking too much?

seriously, did ea actually think these ps2 ports would sell well? as it stands, franchises like madden and nba live need some effort put into them. i can safely say that nba live wii is one of the worst games ive ever played, certainly the worst basketball game of all time.

sitsalot
