Hello,

Two points haven't been raised on this discussion that I think are
important.
The first is to look at the parents. If they are fat, then the girl
has lots to be concerned about, whether or not she is now overweight
or not.
The second is that girls often pack on a lot of weight in preparation
of puberty. My daughter's school had a speaker who specialises in the
concerns of girls and she said that it is not unusual for a young girl
to put on up to 25 lbs in preparation. I saw that exact thing happen
in many of my daughter's classmates. None of them who were
*overweight* then are any where near fat now, and they graduated high
school almost ten years ago.
So look at what she eats, look at what the family eats, and go from
there. Exercise and activity isn't really helpful, as all its good
weight effects can be erased by the consumption of one pop afterwards.

Good luck,

bg

I'm less concerned about this kid's BMI and more concerned that the parent had to explain to the TEN YEAR-OLD that everything that she sees on the TV might not be absolute truth. If she isn't fat she's at least functionally retarded. I can't even imagine what's going to happen to this girl when she hits puberty if her self-esteem is already this shaky.

Garonyldas

Again, 4'9" and 92lbs isn't fat. Not by adult BMI. Not by children's BMI. Yes, BMI is a flawed standard, but its flawed in the OTHER direction. Even by that flawed system, she IS NOT FAT.

That right there is the problem. But we live in a culture so obsessed with hating fat people that people reflexively agree with any condemnation of someone as fat. Doesn't matter a bit if it makes no sense.

BStu

@Abriael: I tend to lump all of an electronic device's miscalculations into the catagory of "glitches". It may not be completely accurate, but I'm not too particular on semantics anyway.
@Drake Lake: I think a better question would be, how many people do you know of that take things like this so personally? If someone was taking a test like this and it gave them such a drastically incorrect result, most of them would just brush it off by saying "There's something wrong here." Unless the test was proven to give completely accurate results without fail, none of them would take it personally. What does it say about this girl's self-esteem that she allowed something so minor to shatter it?

BMI be damned, this girl isn't obese, but she's definitely chunky. Overweight I think is the technical term, which is what the program says, right?

Now, she may grow into that by the time she's 16, or she might continue to pudge up.

I didn't read all the posts, but to clarify, the BMI is not always a good yardstick to measure how healthy you are. The reson is because it was created using measurements based on Caucasians. So if you're of a different ethnic background, it may not be very accurate.
And even if you are, it also doesn't work if you're very athletic/fit (i.e. more muscle than fat). This is because muscle is denser than fat, so if you have a lot of muscle but am not very tall, the BMI will still show you as "overweight".

@Bokusatsu_Tenshi: I agree that parents should always do a little more parenting, specifically the parent featured in this article.

The problem with Wii Fit is that it isn't being presented as a game at all, but as a fitness program. If you have to explain how the fitness software for Wii is incorrect, then the program becomes useless because it's inaccurate. If you want to try and call it a game, then why would it take your weight then offer a subjective opinion about it? For fun? Guess you just use it for everything else, but don't let it weigh you!

It's not that problems like those didn't happen in Japan... it's that instead of japanese parents, after something like that happened, ran immediately on forums to complain about "the videogames offended my kid baaww", they probably educated their kids not to take games seriously.

No, seriously. If she really isn't fat (and I'm not discarding the possibility that the kid really is fat and has overprotective parents), the parents just gotta explain that the game isn't accurate, and a doctor will know best if she really is worried about her weight.

Things like that happen, either be a videogame that called her fat, either be a friend or something. This is part of education. If they can't understand that, it's now WiiFit that has a problem.. it's them.

Bokusatsu_Tenshi

No need for a game to call her fat. Although she is a bit alarmist, the mother is right to be worried, she doesn't want her daughter to get anorexia. That would be horrible.

LaughingCrow

Everyone making fun just keep it up, as you fail to realize the major health issues of poor body image and eating disorders. I read here at Kotaku how the Wii Fit (Japan version) software was making a judgment of your weight and announcing the fact. I thought that this was a translation error from Japanese to English and let it go. To have this un-intelligent piece of software pronounce you "fat" or "just right" is simply an idiotic premise for a piece of entertainment, as well as a stupid way to encourage someone to be "healthier".

I saw some of the commenters quoting BMI numbers as a guide for what is determined "fat" or not. You know what? Body Mass Index has NOTHING to do with the health or proper weight of an individual. BMI is used as a GENERAL GUIDE for ENTIRE POPULATIONS, not a measure of a single person's health. If Wii Fit is using BMI charts as a guide, then it fails as a measure of proper weight. Worse yet, it will make those who already have a poor body image feel even worse for absolutely no reason. The height/weight relationship has little to do with actual health.

My sister suffered from Bulimia for a period of 15 years. I lived in the same house with her for ten of those (and our Mom, and our brother) and none of us knew what she was going through. She was (is) short at 5'1", but extremely active during the time (dancing, gymnastics, swim) and muscular, not overweight. Judging by the link Wii Fit would have found my sister "fat" as well, and I guarantee with no reason. I thought Wii Fit was a bad idea when first announced. Now I know it is a bad idea.

crashlanding

I think I know what this girl is going through, I'm considered "class 3 obese" based on my height/weight but I mountain bike, canoe and hike a lot. I also do weights. To look at me, you would laugh and say the system is screwed up.

But my doctor made a very good point. Even if I'm 30 lbs over my "optimal" weight and it's attributed to muscle, your body still has to carry that weight and your heart still has to compensate for it. It's still a stress on your body. You may not have all the bad cholesterol and other things that go along with "fat" people but being overweight regardless of it being muscle or fat does have an effect on your body.

hyperhyper2099

oh my god are there any doctors or medical students in this thread??? im not from USA so i have broken english but apparently no one has given the profesional oppinion so...

it amazes me how much ignorant shit peope had said in this thread:

1)"im muscled but BMI tells me im fat" SO WHAT???? THAT DOES NOT MEAN BMI IS FLAWED, its one of its restrictions but overall it is still pretty accurated in telling people they are OVERWEIGHT (extra fat wich stress their cardiovascular system)

2) te girl 19.9 shes normal, SHES NOT!!! you need the poblational data, apparently wii fit has it...this has been clarified by some posts but many convinced themself because they think BMI is applicable with no age consideration

3) "By being big and strong, you may not notice the effects of it as much in your daily life, but it's still putting a strain on your body that can have long-term effects." WHAAAT?????? FAT IS BAD NOT BEACUSE ITS "HEAVY" IS BECAUSE OF THE EFFECTS IT PRODUCES IN YOUR ENDOTHELIUM (ARTERIES) do you know what diabetes is , or high blood pressure??? YOU SHOULD GO GOGOGOGOG WIKIPEDIAAAAAAAA

4)I wouldn't worry about the kid being 10 or even 20 pounds overweight until she reaches maybe age 15 or 16 or so....WHAT THE HELL?????? EVERYONE SHOULD STICK TO THE RECOMMENDED WEIGHT, THERE ARE MILLION REASON FOR THIS, EVEN IF YOU ARE A KID YOU HAVE TO STOP EATING SHIT AND START EATING HEALTY, THAT IS THE MOST PRINCIPAL MEASURE TO LOSE WEIGHT, BECAUSE EXERCISE IS IMPORTANT ALSO BECAUSE WILL HELP IMPROVE YOUR MUSCLES AND OTHER STUFF BUT EATING HABITS ARE THE PRINCIPAL CAUSE OF OBESITY

computor

Oh, and I agree that BMI, when calculated based on height and weight alone, is a poor indicator of being "fat".

She's overweight via the BMI.

But the BMI is acknowledged to be a very flawed system. It was developed by a 19th century Belgian mathematician.

BMI doesn't really work when you're 10. It applies mainly to 18-35 year olds. There's a lot more leeway in being overweight at age 10 simply because it may be the way you develop. When I was ten, I was most definitely overweight, but it wasn't because I didn't eat right or didn't exercise. I grew three feet in two years and everything evened out.

And even then, yes, there are different body types that mess with BMI. Big-boned is a horribly overused excuse, but it is real. Then there's just plain different builds: Muscle mass is heavier than fat-- hence the average NFL Running Back being 5'10" and 280 lbs: MORBIDLY OBESE according to the BMI.

I wouldn't worry about the kid being 10 or even 20 pounds overweight until she reaches maybe age 15 or 16 or so. At that point, she's at her peak in growth, and should have evened out.

Though then again, calling her fat just to watch her cry might be entertaining.

tzaketh

Just wanted to point out that leanness of the body isn't a great indicator of health either. For argument's sake, let's say you're the leanest person alive and built like a tank. You have 0% body fat, are 6'0" tall, and are a hulk weighing in at 240 lbs. So, you've got no fat and are one lean-mean ass-stomping machine. But you know what? Your heart doesn't care and neither does your skeleton. You're still carrying around 240 lbs of weight. It doesn't matter to your heart and bones what comprises the weight that you're carrying. A pound of flab weighs the same as a pound of muscle. By being big and strong, you may not notice the effects of it as much in your daily life, but it's still putting a strain on your body that can have long-term effects.

Vipre77

I played sports, worked out and ran every day when I was in school and I was "solidly built". It didn't mean I wasn't overweight.

This is the problem with BMI's, I very much dislike the general grouping people tend to do with a BMI, just because the score is higher than that of inactive non-overweight people.

Example, I am 6"2, 210lbs, this makes my BMI 27.0, which is apparently "Overweight".

My issue with this, is I work out once or twice a day, have very little fat, and am a very competitive athlete. My muscle mass is being assumed to be Fat.

So yea, the system is very flawed, they need to take into account the fact that I am active and in good shape somehow.

Not an average joe who sits on a couch with stick arms and all my weight in my beer belly(not that theres anything wrong with that :D).

Fert

I guess it doesn't use the standard BMI index that most people are using to get a value of 19.xx on here.

The problem with this story is that we can't judge the girl without pictures.
Actually no. The wii fit goes by a set of predefined standards, too bad that not all human bodies fit those standards.

I actually agree with these concerns. As someone who has dealt with an eating disorder, I think young people being told that they overweight by something that is unable to measure a proper muscle vs fat ratio is quite scary, since they are so sensitive and frankly, find it easy to believe anything negative told to them. I think WiiFit could have been equally successful at tracking goals without commenting on someone's body. Simply by showing how many calories were burned by each activity or explaining the health benefits each one provides, they could have encouraged the activities to be performed and they wouldn't have to make anyone feel bad about themselves! I was honestly shocked when I saw that WiiFit did this and knew that it wouldn't give accurate reads. Come on Nintendo, you guys are going for girl gamers and kids, is this really the right thing to do?

grantly

So...from my reading of comments, I take it most of you are perfect weight and everything. You work out at gyms 4-5 times a week for 2-3 hours a day. You hold an executive position for some company. You're married with two children, and a third on the way, and of course, all three are in perfect health.

Oh, and you like to get raped by bums.

Anyway, there seems to be some exaggeration going on, like, how the little girl is "overweight" and yet people act as though morbid obesity has struck and made an imprint into her mind, so ten years from now she'll be getting gastric bypass. Which isn't the case, because she's freaking ACTIVE!

And why is no one on the issue of Nintendo having a product that could cause psychological damage? You think people love hearing they're overweight, even when they eat right, workout, and more? Oh, wait, I guess half of you would think it would be all right, from the looks of it.

Master Saji

Has anyone been to a playground recently or a elementary school? If you're a parent you'll notice kids these days are FAT!!! There is no way to sugar-coat this; it's an epidemic. Maybe they did move the BMI numbers which skews it even more, but that doesn't take away from the fact that we're walking around with 10 year old timebombs which will absolutely flood our medical system in 20 years if we don't do something about it now. I have a 12 year old daughter of average build who is about 4' 9" and she weighs about 75 pounds which sounds about right. She runs, rows, and is just as active as any other kid. Now imagine her with another 17 pounds. What is that 17 pounds? You can't tell me this 10 year old is throwing down some heavy iron so at least some of it has to be fat. Imagine carrying around 17 pound bags of fat. I'd be embarrassed if I were this mother to let it get to the point where a game console is chiding me on my parenting. As much as you we want to pawn the responsibility off on others, it is a parenting issue. We're a nation of fat-asses and the sooner we own up to it, we can address it and not further exacerbate the impending medical crisis already plaguing our nation.

Citizen Kang

I can fit 29s but 30s but I like them a tad loose. It kinda depressed me when two people eyeballed me and told me I definitely couldn't wear size 30 (like I don't know how to buy my own pants). One girl even even gave me the whole "You're gonna be sorry when you try on those size 30s and find out they don't fit you."

I think, with all due respect, people who say that she is not fat because she has a BMI of 19.9, are deeply ignorant of how BMI's work. BMI only works on ADULT people who have stopped growing, that is for girls atb around 15 and for males at around 17. BMI also overtstates the weight of the tall and understates the weight of the small. Since children are much shorter than adults, you can't use the BMI formula for children, so doctors use tables or formulas adjusted for each age range.
If you use a normal BMI formula, at a BMI of 20 an adult would be normal, a 10 year old obsese and a 5 year old morbidly obese.
The standard BMI formula can't be used on children, it completely understates their weight, BMI for people under 14 is pretty useless.

Gannon

I think a lot of people are in denial of being fat, chubby, overweight, obese, whatever.

For me, I was told I was fat since I was in kindergarten. I was almost 12 lbs at birth and have had issues my entire life about my weight.

Part of my problem was that my parents and grandmother would tell me, "Oh you're a big guy so it's ok to eat two hamburgers." or in some cases really demand I finish my plate. Of course, once I realized they were fat it became clearer.

What really took me back was at the end of my last year at college I was 250 lbs! After that I decided I had to do something - ANYTHING!

First thing I did was cut out regular soda and switched to diet. I know people will complain that's not much better but when you were downing the equivalent of 5-6 Pepsis a day, the switch to 3 diet Pepsis is worlds better. I also gave up on going to fast food places on a regular basis and when I do, I get a kids meal.

I really never gave anything up, I just made food less important for me. 1 year later my scale tells me I'm below 230 and with my height that makes me now overweight again (instead of obese)

Wii Fit probably will tell me I'm fat but oh well. I don't really care. I know I'm losing slow and steady so it will be nice to track that. Now if I just can convince my work to pay for it if they can be made to believe it's exercise equipment.

battra92

This is definitely a point on which to reserve judgement as there could be a lot of errors here. Numbers could have been entered incorrectly, for instance. Several commenters have correctly pointed out that the BMI is not a perfect measurement, and this also should not be underestimated. Because the BMI does not take % body fat into account people with very low fat and a great deal of muscle (Tom Cruise, for instance) can be misidentified as obese. As with any surrogate measure, you should take the limitations of the measurement into account. The BMI is just another piece of data and should not be used as the sole basis of judgment.

However, I would encourage you not to shrug off a BMI warning just because the measurement gives false positives: after all, very few people have a movie star's physique (unless we're talking Chris Farley here). If BMI indicates you are overweight, and if you don't have a tight, muscled bod, then chances are that you are, in fact, a fatty. If you are not certain whether you should be concerned or what actions you should take, then consult with your doctor or other expert about what additional tests are available and what changes in diet and exercise habits would be most appropriate for you.

mwclarkson

I turned on my Wii today (to get that Nintendo update), and the first thing it said to me was, "Kid.. you're fat."

I was astonished. "Wait.. what?"

In a bright white and light blue bubble, the pale grey text kept flashing at me, "Seriously, you're fat."

"Wait, how can you even know that? I'm not even a kid.. okay, the shortness and all, but hey! I don't even have a Wii Fit! How can you even know I'm fat?!"

It dawned on me how insane I truly was talking back at an inanimate box meant to entertain me, but was instead somehow verbally abusing me at my lack of proper food nutrition.

"Look, you haven't played with me all of yesterday, and yeah, you haven't bought Wii Fit yet, which has to prove you've gotten fatter. Not even Wii Boxing. Are you proud of yourself?"

"Hey wait, give me a break here.. I just wanted to give you a system update."

"Don't think you can sneak that KFC meal past me again. You're fat. I know you... all that attention to Cooking Mama adds on the pounds lingering at those international foods you cook..."

I walk away.. cause when you start letting the Wii tell you things and you take it too seriously, chances are you're going to be eating mushrooms, playing operation on some random stranger, or possibly harrassing the local cat about getting into this tiny round ball you bought off a gashapon machine.

Besides.. at least the DS says I'm pretty...

MelodyKitn

WiiFit calculates Body Mass Index and according to a BMI calculator I just used online a 10 year old girl who weighs 92 pounds and is 4'9" is at the 26th percentile which is WAY below overweight.

Since no one else has reported a problem like this with WiiFit it sounds like this little girl's info got entered wrong into the game. BMI is a pretty simple calculation so I highly doubt that they entered everything in correctly and it told her she was fat.

The only thing the game can detect is weight, everything else has to be manually entered. If you put in the wrong info, you're going to get an erroneous result. Garbage in, garbage out.

skullivan

Honestly, though, after all the griping here is said and done we have to keep in mind that this is a piece of circuitry. It's doing a relatively simple task of taking a scale measurement and placing it somewhere on a preset spectrum. As stated above, "overweight" does not mean "fat" it simply means that - for whatever reason you choose to believe (true or false) - that person weighs more than the program has been told falls within the "average" end of the spectrum. Nothing more, nothing less.

Here's the thing. I'm not sure that certain portions of Wii Fit are intended for children. For a child that age and height 92 pounds might be fine, but for an adult it may be too much (probably not though). One also has to consider if the proper calibration was used. Was she wearing heavy clothes but selected the light clothing option in the game? Did she stand squarely on the balance board without shifting around? This is the reason Wii Fit is still labeled as a game; it can help you get into shape but it's not a replacement for a professional opinion.

agies

First of all that board has some of the most insane people on the planet posting there. Most of them are Darwin award candidates.

As far as the Wii Fit it measures the kids BMI and weight. I would trust the Wii fit over the parent as solidly built is parent code for fat. There is an obesity epidemic even among kids that are active because their parents probably still feed them crap . It's a combination of diet and excercise so if one or the other is not correct then you will still be unhealthy.

tawni

It's really weird trying to wrap one's head around this. When I was most active (i.e. going to the gym five times a week), I weighed about 155, and I'm about 5'11". My BMI was higher than that girl's, but not by much. It was very much within the "healthy" range. And I felt healthy.

These days? I'm not 155. I'm over 200. Do I look fat? Not really. I look about average for guys my age. I'm just overweight. But "overweight" is not the same thing as "fat," and a lot of people don't seem to recognize the difference. "Overweight" seems to mean, "you might want to consider a more active lifestyle."

"Obese," on the other hand, is a step above and beyond overweight. "Obese" means, "You are fat."

So, for someone to have a game tell them they're overweight and then call themselves fat means they don't understand the terminology.

That said, if Wii Fit told her she was overweight, I can't help but wonder if it read her weight incorrectly. Like maybe they posted the weight measurement they obtained from a traditional scale or something.

Still blows my mind that 155 for a 5'11" male is healthy, and so is 92 for a 4'9" female. The numbers are just staggering to me.

BtownDesignGuy

First off, BMI does suck as a means of measuring anything. Beyond that, even by BMI, this child is WELL within a normal range. Its very alarming that the WiiFit software (and SO many of the tremendously mature commentators here) are stigmatizing a healthy girl. I don't agree with stigmatizing fat children in the first place, but this is part of a continuing effort to push that stigmatization further so the "pre-obese" (otherwise known as NOT FAT) are harassed as well.

BStu

They should have phrased it differently. Brain Training doesn't tell you "you're dumb" when you do one of the tasks for the first time and naturally take some more time as you do once you know what to do.
Second: As other posters pointed out, BMI (height to weight ratio) is indeed a poor measure of healthy weight, since muscle weighs more than fat. And even if BMI were a good measure, the given ratio is indeed quite "normal."

Yes, being overweight is a real health problem, and common in America. But anorexia and bulimia are real health problems too, physically and emotionally; instead of worrying about weighing too much we need to worry about getting more physical activity.

Then I started working midnights, dropped to 160, and then climed back to about 170. I don't work out as much, but I have a slight layer of flab on my gut.. BMI still lists me as overweight, but you'd never think so if you saw me.

ThatGuyOverThere

If these parents went through health class and paid attention then their teachers should have told them about certain things such as how muscle > fat. I remember a long time ago in my 7th grade health class I was told how BMI is pretty innacurate for measuring "fat" for the most part just because of other factors. Still I can't imagine some 10 year old being really muscular and i'd assume that 92 at 10 is pretty fat since I was 80ish and used to play outside every day.

So all I feel like doing is putting in a sarcastic comment of "ZOMG NINTENDO CALLED SOMEONE FAT! IN A NATION WHERE 30-40% OF THE POPULATION IS OBESE! =O =O"

PrincessAyu

@WizarDru: With a BMI of 19.9, she's not fat.
From what I understand, childrens BMI is calculated from percentage of population rather than pure height/weight as with adults - maybe they're using a data set from a 'thinner' nation (possibly Japan, or a european nation)?

aldo_14

That said, there are two things at fault: several people openly question if the Wii Fit took her weight correctly, as a couple of posters claim that their copy in the UK was off by nearly 20 pounds.

Second: I HAVE a 10 year old daughter...and I'm pretty sure if Wii Fit tells her she's fat, she'd laugh and say "WhatEVER". This sounds like the kid has other issues, possibly confidence and body image issues, which aren't Wii Fit's fault. Did anyone notice she referred to her as her DSD? That's DEAR STEP DAUGHTER. I think you have your emotional issues and step-mom drama accounted for RIGHT THERE.

WizarDru

BMI is not a good indicator of healthiness and being overweight. Muscle weighs more than fat. Someone could have 8% body fat because they are so muscular that they are technically "overweight" on the BMI charts. The only true measure of whether or not someone is overweight to calculate your fat-lean ratio, which cannot be done on scales.

That said, too many people in the US and around the world have a distorted version of what is healthy and what is not. Many people who are overweight are loathe to admit it, especially when it comes to their children. However, it is a bit much for a game to tell a 10 year old child she is overweight. Children are different shapes and sizes growing up, and sometimes they don't lose that extra fat until after puberty. If the child is participating in healthy activities, and does not eat a lot of junk food, then she is more than likely not overweight, and just needs to grow up some.

sj4iy
