My only wish is that they would stop running off at the mouth already. To be precise, my comments were meant to show why it is that I am not "coming home to Sony" only, not to sound like some sort of fanboy rant.

Yes, playstation is home to GTA, but since sales favor 360, a lot of people adopted the 360 as GTA's new home. Sony shot themselves up when they refused to negotiate with Rockstar for GTA exclusivity before the launch of PS3. Unfortunately, Sony thought that they didn't need GTA.

Trying to illustrate that brand identities/relationships are complex and don't always symbiotically strengthen each other even when both are strong and 'good'. Rare and Nintendo had brand images that strengthened each other, where as MS actually needed rare to expand their demographic and image. What the acquisition seemed to do is overpower Rare's image and Rare _seems_ to have suffered as they no longer seem to have the recognition or brand recognition in MS's world, nor has MS seemed to have lured people away from Nintendo's traditional kid frendly/family oriented demographic, but then the Wii sort of changed the rules again.

Speaking as someone who always played GTA on the PS systems, I gotta say I was a bit surprised at the control layout on the new one. I've also got the first three on the original Xbox (yay garage sales!) and I have to say the controls feel as though they were layed out on an Xbox first. Even the "classic" setting isn't correct.

I'm used to it now, but I have to say it's way too hard to control the camera to look around, relative to the last three on PS2.

GTA has been just as much an XBox series since the double pack came out on the XBox. GTA3/VC/SA on the XBox are significantly more entertaining on that console, thanks in no small part to the integrated custom soundtracks.

Wish these "next gen" systems we have now could pull off something fucking simple like that. All we have now is a half-assed "Play music in any game! Oh, but it also mutes most of the game audio" on the 360.

I had two people, on seperate occasions, asking me about GTA IV and if it was good and up to all the hype etc. I told them it was and without mentioning either 360 or PS3, they both said "I might have to buy a 360 then".

Both of them game, but casually or on the PC. They want to play GTA IV and the deciding factor is not "oh but they've always been on the playstation, so I'll need to get one of those" but "oh, the 360 is cheaper, I'll get that".

It isn't rocket science :)

Confession Time: I only owned a PC for games and played console games on my roommates' PS2s before 2007. We spent many a college night playing GTA:VC and SA.

I was about to drop a couple hundred on my computer to upgrade it right around the time GTA IV was announced for the 360 alongside the recently released PS3. I ended up buying a 360 after seeing the "Pruit Igoe" GTA IV trailer.

GTA 1 and 2 = PC games.

GTA III, VC, SA = PS2 games....BUT

...that's because that's where they launched first. The Xbox versions however played just as well but were significantly better looking and well worth the wait, or in my case a replay.

GTA IV = open house. I can't comment on the PS3 version but the 360 one kicks ass and has the benefit of very slick xbox live integration and the exclusive downloadable content...as long as it doesn't turn out to be some "Horse Armour" ;-)

@enewtabie: Didn't they compare and find that percentage wise PS3 had more quality games on metacritic than the other 2? This was by ratio of games available. This is of course a silly number, ripe for abuse.
The thing is when you are fighting for your market share against worthy competition you will have to do better... the famous old old Avis slogan "We're number 2 so we try harder".
A lot of people associate GTA with Playstation because III was the first hugely successful entry. There's a lot of complexity with brand association and such.
Imagine if Nintendo's Rare was bought by MS to expand their age target and t melded Rare's brand of game style with MS XBox image/audience. You'd see their image getting overshadowed and their brand strength getting diluted, and none of the titles doing remarkably well despite decent reviews. :)

My 360 died on GTA launch day so I was going to pick up a PS3 and the game, even checked craigslist for a cheap used ps3 but then I saw that I'd be better off waiting for the 360 to come back from repairs because multiplayer might not be there in 2 weeks and dlc may never happen.

I was going to get a PS3 because of Lair, then heard about the controls. I beat Heavenly Sword in a few hours over a friends place. It just seems every time I get close to buying one they give me a reason not to... Not a 360 fan boy I got mine for free I just don't have a reason to get a ps3 yet.

I started playing with GTA III and Vice City on PS2, but eventually traded in my copies for the Xbox versions because of custom soundtracks, improved graphics, etc. Got the 360 version of GTA IV. Yeah, GTA was synonymous with the PlayStation brand but that's changed slightly.

Despite my preferences, the PS3 version of GTA IV is just as great. No matter which you get it's all good.

The NPD sales data from April and May will definitely justify this statement. When you think of Grand Theft Auto, you think Playstation. Just go to any local gamestop, gamestation, etc. and they will tell that the game is being sold about equally between the two consoles, but they are selling alot of PS3's since the games launch. That PS2 installed user base will have its bonues.

Just because person "X" knows people who played GTA on PS2 and have now got it on XBox doesn't mean that's the case for EVERYONE.
Because, conversely, I know loads of people who bought PS2s JUST for GTA III; and now I know many people who have bought PS3s JUST for GTA IV. And would never buy a 360 because they don't trust the brand, the stability of the 360, the noises they make, and aren't blinded by things like crazed patriotism. Oh, and they want Blu-Ray. Their words, not mine. Personally I couldn't give a monkey's about Blu-Ray movies.

he's got a point, kind of. the "hardcore" gamer to the casual gamers know that sony had GTA first for a number of years and usually when the news would cover GTA for whatever "it's teaching your kids to kill people" bullshit story, it's the PS2 in the shot, not the xbox.

now, that's not to say the 360 isn't going to outsell the PS3 version. it's a no brainer. but, i don't doubt that the PS3 is moving hardware and selling alot more then people think it will. i really think that people are underestimating the PS3 numbers, like because of the 360's DLC, the PS3 version would somehow magically sit on the shelf.

I don't own a PS3 - I don't have the cash right now, but does anybody here care? - and to be blunt, I don't care why you don't own a PS3 either. None of us do. 360 has a great line-up of games, an excellent library, but guess what, so does Sony's behemoth. Guys like you and I chose one way, for the moment, but that in no way makes us superior.

Anyway, I just love how the sales of one game seems to be the solid proof all fanboys need to claim victory in the console war. I hate Sony, but I also hate Microsoft. I'm a Nintendo fanboy, but I had no problem selling my Wii when the games stopped coming. I just go where the software is, and last fall, starting with BioShock, that was the poorly designed 360. (Note: I'm not a PC gamer)

I have a PS3 and a 360, my PS3 is for exclusives such as Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted, MGS4, Final Fantasy, etc and Blu Ray movies. I picked up GTA4 for the 360 because of the DLC, I can play all of my friends online (none of them have a PS3), and I enjoy what the pursuit of achievements adds to the experience and longevity of a game.

i dont like how the DS3 feels with this game. the triggers for driving and shooting are a little too stiff, my fingers slip off a lot. It just gets annoying after a while.

Ive gotten way more playtime in with the 360 version, its really just a controller preference although I think the 360 version looks slightly better.

I had GTA3/VC/SA all for the PS2, then when I got rid of the PS2 I got GTA3/VC for the Xbox. I didn't like SA at all.

Now, I can only speak for my gaming friends, but all 20 or so of them all played the GTA series on the PS2 but all own GTAIV for the 360 today. Mainly because none of them want or own a PS3.

The sales are very close considering that there is no marketing for PS3 and very aggressive advertising for the 360 version.

Along with larger install base and higher attach rate for 360 i dont think the numbers work in favour of the 360.

- It wont have the DLC.
- The 360 has more great games.
- The 360 has more RPGs (my favorite genre).

Well, Grand Theft Auto has never really seemed too tied to one platform to me. I played III on the PS2, Vice City on the PC, and San Andreas on the Xbox.

I ended up buying IV for the Xbox 360, mainly because of extra DLC and Achievements, although I also prefer the Xbox 360 controller to that of the PS3.

I bought a 360 specifically for this game, and sold my Wii.

All the games I'm looking forward to are on both (Fallout 3 & Force Unleashed primarily), so it was the multiplayer, achievements & DLC that put it over the top for me.

To me, gta has always ended up leaving a bad taste in my mouth with playstation.
The first one had rampant slow down on psx. and gta iii i think was responsible for my first ps2 dying(overworked i think). I've gotten all of them since III on xbox systems and have been more than satisfied.

All that matters right now is GTA4 and which system the game is 1. better on(even though slightly),which is the 360 version and 2. which syatem the game will have a longer life on which will ultimately move more new systems in the long run, which again is the 360.

I don't understand all the talk about the prior versions of GTA which for all important reasons don't really matter all that much in the here and now except for reasons to do with gaming nostalgia.The PS2 was and is the PS2.The PS3 is Sony's current system and if comparison's absolutely HAVE to be made then let them be made with 360 versions of games vs. PS3 and none other.

Don't forget the PSP as well. While it is technically part of the "Sony platform" it is peripheral at best. As you rightly pointed out "home" is the PC and the PS2 only became associated with the franchise through its gargantuan last-gen hardware lead.

I have all three next-gen consoles and picked it up for the 360. In fact, I picked up another 360 when I bought it, as I took advantage of Best Buy's "buy GTA and any 360 and get a $50 gift card" deal to upgrade to an elite and toss the old one upstairs to my kids.

I don't think of what the first one started as but as what the rest went. From GTA2 to San Andreas it was all Playstation first then it got to other systems. More people are just used to Playstation more than anything else.

As For Me: I really don't care for this. I have it for the only system I have. A 360.

I'm sick of hearing this. GTA was on PC, then Dreamcast, then PS1, then gameboy color, then GBA, then PS2, then Xbox.

It's not a PS franchise and shouldn't be associated with it. I'm sure more copies sold on PS1 and PS2 than the other systems, but that's because of the higher install base. If there is any platform this game should be "coming home" to it should be the PC because that's where it started.

Personally I associate GTA with GTA not with playstation, and never mind which is better or which sold more when are they going to fix the damn multiplayer. Its fine if you want to play on your own but for big groups its a nightmare trying to get everyone into one game.

Probably because he didn't say it did outsell the 360.It's moving sales of hardware and games...and he's right.Sony is still not in bad shape for sales of GTA4 compared to 360(and MS has a much larger install base)
