I don't really care what the plot is, I'm just happy that there is a game based on Parkour.

Very few of them too, and this looks more exciting than AC (in terms of moving around). AC got a little too repetitive after 20+ mins of running.

Plus this gives you the perspective of what it's like to be that character, who cares about showing off your moves (that's not even what parkour's about). Weight is even portrayed well!

maJorlaTte

Dear EA: Keep the breathing SFX, but please don't rely on three different samples; it *would* get repetitious. Mix it up. Get like 100-200 different samples.

The shaky cam is GOOD. Ignore the naysayers. Or let 'em switch it off somehow.

This looks incredible. The story is corny but other than that it's got that buttery polish to the movement and perspective that really looks 'this gen'.

This is one of those cases where I hope the devs don't take to heart many gamers' first impressions of it. People complaining about how 'it won't work in 1st person' or 'the view looks weird'.

Really? Like how fist fighting and stealth 'didn't work' in Riddick: Butcher Bay? The perspective looks weird? It's a game about running, do you want to glide robotically along the ground like in Halo?

God forbid anyone experiment with ways of playing a first person game. The third person perspective complaint is weak, every single game like this (Tomb Raider, Crackdown, Free Running -The Game- ) does it in third person. While I certainly think the OPTION of a third person view would be nice, I'd far rather tackle the climbing/running/etc from a fresh perspective that's polished.

So long as they don't make the predictable mistake of taking the gunplay too far and make the latter half of the game into a typical FPS battlefest where the game forgets it's greatest unique strengths and tries to create the illusion of climax by making you kill an army (Assassins Creed, Crysis sort of).

One of the very few original properties that actually feels (story excluded) original. In my top 5 watch list.

russtophiles

Two suggestions for the devs:

1. After you complete the singleplayer, please open up the world so that you can just run around and do cool shit. STALKER required a patch in order to do this. Please don't make the same mistake.

2. Perhaps you might consider a series of multiple rooms where the object is to go from the entranceto the exit, much like PORTAL, with increasing difficulty, but using the Faith parkour mechanic.

Otherwise, your game looks wonderful.

Sullyville

The first First Person game since TF2/portal to pique my interest. I was really surprised to see DICE was developing it. I guess I just think of them as the Battlefield house.

Anyways this thread is brimming with stupid. The "not 3rd person = no thanks" people are jackasses. I know from playing plenty of First person games that jumping from platform to platform isn't the perspective's strong point. But I thought it worked great in Metroid Prime. So yeah, I believe such a talented studio whose entire game seems built around traversing an environment in first person will be able to make it work. And from what I'm seeing it looks much more engrossing than an Assassins Creed.

The character design people are even more moronic. I'm not a fan of the under-eye tattoo but everything else is pleasing, believable, and unique. She has a sporty figure, tottally believable breast size (!! in a video game? What?) and isn't in some impractical outfit.

People keep referring to this as a PS3 game. It was just SHOWN on PS3.

EA is the PUBLISHER. DICE is the DEVELOPER. It's worked out great so far. EA has been redeeming them selves in quite a few ways lately from their developer dismantling past.

Oh and I can't believe a few people thought the music was lame. Seriously, broaden your shitty musical tastes please.

skewt

Hmmm...

1. Dice have a great track record for Multiplayer PVP games, but not for a story-driven single player game
2. The story sounds absolutely dreadful
3. As soon as there was Stranglehold type shooting I lost lots of interest
4. Would love this in 3D with goggles on and head tracking
5. First person jumps and arms - reminds me of that Trespasser Jurassic Park Game, which wasn't exactly a major success

In summary: Nice tech demo - am really doubtful about Dice being able to tell a good storyline that sets this apart from the mass
reminds me of that Jurassic Park 1st person game.

thinlebowski

I wonder if it would be possible to mimic proper depth perception through depth of field effects, with the game automatically focusing on whatever's in the center of the screen.

...

Anyway, the major problem with first person platforming is it's too easy to misjudge something and fall to one's death -- you could fix that by adding a level of auto-aim to the jumps, like in Assassin's Creed. This potentially introduces other problems, such as situations where you're aiming one place and the game thinks you're aiming another, but /that/ can be solved through careful level design.

The downside to that is levels have to be sort of simple, with not a lot of meaningful objects close to each other. I think a really good level designer could make this not a problem, so let's hope DICE has some really good level designers.

On another topic entirely, it felt weird when you're right next to a window and it's not reflecting Faith. I hope that was just to make the "It's a girl!" reveal at the end of the video more of a reveal -- otherwise, not having a reflection will be the new not being able to see your own feet.

Stephenls

This is definitely on my "must play" list.

Im liking that first person view, for a change. I really feel like Im in her head and moving along. What always bothered me from an otherwise awesome game like Half Life 2 was that you were just a "floating camera with a gun and sometimes a hand". Gordon Freeman would never emit one sound, not even when injured and you could turn the camera all the way down and you could see how you were suspended in the air with no feet. The worse was when you grabbed a stationary gun or sitting in a car.... no feet on the gas or hands on the steering wheel/gun would appear!
Loving this change of view.

Alex_Mexico

It's got tons of minimalist style, and hopefully they take good advantage of that keeping the majority of the game low-key as opposed to action-heavy.

I find it funny, people always whine and complain about developers not taking any risk, someone tries and takes a risk and people complain that its not like the other games.

Baby steps people, while the first person isn't 'PERFECT' its damn damn good looking. You want a perfect first person experience, you need to go buy a helmet with almost 200 degrees of viewable area around your head. How do you end up getting something like that? Someone takes a chance and creates something like this first.

Personally, I really like the feel of it. The future (if going by the past is any example) gets cleaner and cleaner, who's to say the future enviorment couldn't end up being squeaky clean? I personally like the idea of it. Yet again, tho its different.

And finally a main character who isn't "OMG HOT!!!111oneone". She's average looking, and personally I dig that. I've played the big tittied heroine, I've played the giant buff guy with super powers. Whats wrong with playing as a semi-normal person? In truth, none of the stuff she's doing is out of reach of someone who has done gymnastics or even martial arts ( a little emblished maybe), so there really is no reason the main character has to be some kind of super hero.

I just find it funny. "That game does nothing new!!!111oneone" vs "That doesn't do things like the rest!111oneone". Screwed if you do, screwed if you don't, I kind feel sorry for developers. :/

Khabi

Second, there are guns in the game but killing people literally has no point (other then to kill people) seeing as she's running to a destination with packages and such and guns will slow her down (the interview talked a lot about this). And as to why the city looks pretty baren, it's because this takes place in a very 1984 totalitarian clean of any and all artistic expression type of world. All the buildings are clean white and sterile looking on purpose.

Syndicated Terence

Watched the video, something seemed a bit off. Watched it again, and figured out what it is. These guys made the same mistake every other first-person game designer makes - they're tilting the viewpoint.

Here's a fun exercise: look at something on the wall. Now turn your head 30 degrees to the side. Did the object turn 30 degrees? No, it still looks like it is oriented up and down. There's something in your brain that ensures that within a reasonable range of rotation what you see is reoriented so that up always faces the same way. Until designers of FPSs figure this out the view is always going to feel disorienting.

Cloral

By and large, I don't care for 1st-person platforming or melee combat in video games. There's only so much you can immerse yourself into a 2-D image on your monitor, even if it's built with polyhedrons floating in a virtual space.

Sometimes, as with Portal, you just can't convey things with the same sense of immediacy in 3rd person. I'm actually more intrigued by the 1st-person perspective for this game aesthetically. The real challenge is going to be making it fun to play without over-simplifying the commands or being too unforgiving when judging "distance" from enemies/obstacles/etc.

A 3rd person replay feature, similar to Halo, would be an interesting addition, just so I could see the cool things my floating camera's shell is doing. Besides, I kind of like the character design.

Iron_Cricket

People who want this in 3rd person must be taking retarded pills or missing the whole point.

1st person body awareness is the whole point of the game. Yes anybody can make a 3rd person game that has all sorts of acrobatics, thats not hard to do. In fact its been done to death. However the 1st person genre has sorely lacked a game that actually makes the player feel like something other than a guncam. Yeah sometimes they add a pair of feet under you, but you still don't really feel or move like a body. M.E. is trying to tie the camera to a simulated body to bring that sense of immersion home.

I am really looking forward to this for that very reason, as it really brings another level of immersion to the the stagnating FP genre.

Besides, i don't know about some of you, but 3rd person is a total immersion killer for me. Unless i'm somehow having an out of body experience, my POV is not several feet behind me, its in my eyes. I want to feel like the character, not see the character,

Flyingdebris

3rd person is like playing with dol... action figures. So boring, being a floating camera that follows a dude around. Maybe I'm jaded as a 3d artist, but watching a model do some animtions just doesn't do it for me.

I love the direction of this game, it's fantastic. I say, no 3rd person option whatsoever. Sure it's more difficult, but impairing the player done right creates excitment. Like Steel Battalion. Games are so easy to play these days... It's a bit boring.

Also, I enjoyed FEAR and Dark Messiah, both games that dabble in this type of movements in fps somewhat.

And about motion sickness. I'm sorry you can't play this, but would you deny the rest of us this pleasure because of that? I know I won't be sick, and I want this. My mom gets sick just watching someone playing an fps, but I've never ever felt that. Still I get boat and train-sick. Um, I forgot where I was going with this.

@slickchris7777: Why? It's not that good. I mean don't get me wrong it's fantastic, but it's not so fantastic it's unbelievable (you might remember certain 'target render' trailers - this doesn't look like those, and clearly also looks like gameplay rather than cutscene).

The music was great too. Overall this looks like a fantastic experience but I agree with those who have issues with first-person view. First-person and platforming has always been a dismal failure in my view (and I'm talking about even the platforming elements of the otherwise excellent Metroid Prime games, for instance). On the plus side, it looks like this game is probably more about fluid movement and keeping going than literally trying to judge the exact moment for a jump, so maybe it'll be okay on that score.

quen

Ok, for all the people who don't like the character model.
Think it's too simplistic? Look at the rest of the world. The whole style of the game is very simplistic. While there's many many many buildings, the textures are very similar and straight-forward.

I think this is a bold and exciting move. Too many developers have been showing their prowess with dirty and beat up textures. Yes, it takes more skill and time to make these old worn down textures, but we see it all to often now.

If you can make something this beautiful using the simplest of textures then thats skill above just slaving away at the individual texture .
Seeing the bigger picture of how everything works together is where the art is.

coop510

About first person - I didn't comment on it before, but...

In most games that give the option I play in third. This is usually because a floating disembodied camera doesn't give much feedback. In racing games I don't know where my car is relative to the camera and I crash into things. In Tourist Trophy (bike Turismo) without seeing the rider's body I don't know what position he's in, so I fall off the bike.

On the other hand, now that I have GT5 Prologue, I play a lot in first person because I can actually see the inside of the car as if I were driving. (Though if I'm in a hard race I go to third again because then I can see who is beside me.)

So this game could be different if you can always see your body. No traditional fps "I'm a hovering camera and I have to walk a tightrope with invisible legs" issues.

But with that said, if there's a third person option, and first person doesn't let you quick look U/D/L/R manually, I'd go to third person because it's just not realistic unless your character wears a neck brace the whole time.

fuchikoma

Hmph, I watched the vid for like the fourth time, and I still don't see where CG would be needed.

- Notice how the world itself is quite sterile. Very little in the way of clutter on the rooftops, scratch marks on the buildings, etc.
- The main attraction are the buildings, but I'm a little disappointed in the simplistic blockiness some of them exhibit - see where she makes a jump, looks down, and sees a completely flat row of windows.
- Objects in the world are quite distinct: a good sign of an actual game world, which has characters interacting with individual objects as opposed to CG where the artist can blend the character into the environment.
- Pretty simple textures, although I'm guessing it's a stylistic choice.
- Also fairly simple lighting, especially after what we've seen of games like Killzone and Bioshock.
- Pre-canned animations: another dead giveaway, your character can only interact with other characters at certain angles and distances, and it's hard to get right; Uncharted was so smooth because they were very lenient with the angles/distances and recorded a ton of animations for different situations.
- Lack of characters/physics, at least in the trailer, means you only have to worry about rendering the environment.

It's not just about the pretty reflections, people.

Datheron

Well it looks seriously interesting, something I can't say for a lot of games these days. I like the idea of a first-person game that doesn't rely entitrely on gunplay, and this appears to be of that kind.

Also, to the people hating on the game for the character's appearance. WHAT THE FUCK? Since when does a female protagonist have to be a perfectly proportioned symbol of beauty? I thought we were trying to prove that the gaming world isn't just made up of shallow, hormone-driven teen boys. Then again, this -is- gaming, so should I have expected better?

RaptorShadow

I'm worried it'll just be "Hold down A" as in AC, but it'd be pretty awesome if you could sprint, then choose whether a Monkey Vault, Lazy Vault, Kong Vault, etc. would be best for the obstacle coming up on you. That'd add some nice freedom and depth to the gameplay with unnecessary or inappropriate moves slowing you down or hurting you.

Uzumaki_Kiba

Actually, judging from what a reporter of the Swede mag LEVEL says, that's what it looks like.

He also said that it reminded him of Max Payne, Portal and Prince of Persia, which I for one doesn't dislike the idea of.

One misconception I think that a lot of people have is that this will be a free-roaming game; it's not. But it still allows for improvisation, and a nice balance would probably suit it.

He also noted further that the guy playing in this trailer knows the level very, very, very well.

Regarding the graphics, I don't see that's not possible to make? We've seen PC games that are better looking, and by the looks of it they're using pre-compiled lightmaps, which would kind of explain the very nice ambient lightning in the vid.

Just sayin'.

Melonfodder

@WarlockSoL: I said all publisher *try* to make holiday releases. Obviously games are released at different times duh, but I know from my own experience that EA is far from the only publisher to pressure developers to cut corners to make release dates, OK? Yes Blizzard is a ridiculously successful exception to this standard practice, and very few developers are afforded the same luxury.

I don't think my analogy is poor, you may have heard that Jackson sued New Line for payment issues. They did pressure him quite a bit about time and budget during the production, and anyway you're missing the point I was trying to make, which is merely that many people seem to think that EA is CREATING Mirror's Edge. Do you really think that it's worth arguing against that point??!

gaijira

Wow. I can't believe how profoundly different my (positive) opinion of what we have seen so far of this game is from a lot of people here. I hope you guys don't "focus group" the freshness out of this.

1. Some people want 3rd person? No way. It is much better this way. (I'm the guy who drives in 1st person in GTA IV, and wishes there was a "closer" view on foot) Here's hoping, so everyone is happy, that there will be both 1st and 3rd person views available, but I wouldn't necessarily bet on it.

2. The main character is "ugly"? Come on! She looks like an ACTUAL WOMAN. I love it. I am totally sick of the ridiculous barbie dolls in most games, they embarrass me when I try to show a game to a non-gamer.

3. The city is too sterile? No way! Nope, not to me. Finally, a dystopian future that isn't all burnt-out, brown and decayed; instead is a scrubbed-clean police state. I love the fresh, bleached look. Blue! Red! Yellow! White! I may actually be able to easily navigate this game world, and not have to strain my eyes to see one slighter darker brown pixel amongst a sea of other lighter brown pixels. Look at it this way: YOU are the dirt in this game, the humanity.

4. Cookie cutter plot? Are you serious? You want more aliens destroying the world for no explicable reason? It is at least as good as anything else out there, and in my opinion, reads great, is very promising. It has this great "of this time" vibe to it. I love that I can play a subversive character, who is very "physical" and human instead of being some hyper-ass cyborg with chainguns for arms. Cheers for "lo-tech"

5. Pre-rendered? Check your eyes. Do you play modern games? There is nothing about this that would make me think it is pre-rendered. It all looks like very plausible gameplay.

6. Looks like "standard" platforming fare so far? Even if, mechanically, it is, I dont necessarily have any problem with that. It is the style, presentation, art direction et. al. that make this stand out. BTW, I like "breathing" sounds in games. Very immersive.

I am disappointed so many people see this and just shrug. I guess it is like me shrugging off gears of war.

Mega-Driven

Wow, I'm completely turned off by the first person perspective. I don't feel any connection to the completely sterile white city either -- or the character for that mater. I'm sure the lack of any story from the game images/video isn't helping with that.
Glaring tunnel-vision isn't my idea of a free-running experience, especially when you're left with a bobbing camera and glimpses at the characters hands and feet every few seconds.
The graphics looks great... but I don't see how a bland white pallet is any better than a pale brown/gray one.

With that said, I still think it's ridiculous that there's so much criticism over the girl's design. She looks pretty attractive to me.

Arttemis

I see games like this and sigh. The concept sounds perfect, the graphics look lovely. The music is great (sans the horrible panting). Then we run into the wall of perspective.

Haven't game developers learned? For heavy, intricate platforming games, Third Person is the best for a REASON! STOP trying to make every freakin' genre first-person friendly! Not everyone LIKES this perspective- and more importantly it ISN'T ALWAYS THE BEST PERSPECTIVE TO CHOOSE.

I sincerely hope that it comes with a thrid-person option, but I doubt it will. Which means I will sadly have to cross another game that used to have potential off my list.

MarsLove
