Once you get used to XBL, there's no going back. It's so functional.

You are sitting in the GTA lobby and want to start a game, so you bring up your friend's list (without having to leave the game) and see who all is online. You can see who is already playing GTA and exactly what they are doing in GTA, so you can pretty easily tell who is available and likely to join you.

You've been playing a game in the same lobby with this fellow you just met today. Out of curiosity you pull up his gamercard (without leaving the game) and see that he has a high gamer score on many of the games that you have enjoyed in the past. Boom, you know that you have similar gaming habits and he'd likely make a good addition to your friend's list.

You're having a really hard time getting past something in a game. You know you have friend's that played that game, so you check their acheivements to see if anything indicates they may have passed the area you are stuck in. As soon as you find someone, you send them a message (without leaving the game) "hey man... I'm having a devil of a time with that... how the hell did you do it?"

There are so many uses that really do make gaming more enjoyable.

robinandtami

ah. thanks for clearing that up for me. If this is how most xbox owners feel, i can understand why people spend so much money on it. But i still think its alot of cash just to play multiplayer games with friends.
i actualy dont realy like multiplayer games on consoles, i think multiplayer is a pc thing, but i guess i'm just a bit old school about that. hmm.. i think i just have to buy one if i truly want to understand the love for this machine n.e way, thanks for the reply..

You are probably half right. Five years from now will be almost 8 years after the launch of the 360. I certainly HOPE they have a new console by then. I feel certain MS will have learned quite a few things from this generation and we will have very few hardware problems the next gen. Couple that with the 360's superior software (i.e user friendliness, XBL) and the next gen is certain to be the best ever.

robinandtami

I can explain that. I Have a PS3 and two 360's. My PS3 sees zero game time. None. It is a nice blu-ray player though.

I love multiplayer games, and after using XBox Live for years; there's no way that I could tolerate multiplayer on the PS3. XBox Live allows you to have a community of friends, and makes it very easy to keep up with them and play games with them. I have friends on my list that I have played with for YEARS. I would never be able to tolerate having to exit the game I am playing in order to send my friend's invites to that game, or to send them a message, or to send a friend request to that guy that I just had a blast playing with. It's really assinine and something Sony needs to fix ASAP if they want to be able to keep up in America. XBox Live is for me, and many others apparently, enough of an enticement to ensure that I remain an XBox cusomter through this generation of hardware diffictulty. BTW, between my two 360's; I have over 4 years of 360 ownership and have only had one RRoD. It was mostly my fault though. Even though I was aware that the 360 needs A LOT of ventilation; I put it in a poorly ventilated enclosure. It ringed out there almost immediately after working flawlessly for over two years in a well ventilated area.

robinandtami

all of the consoles will have inflated user numbers if you only go by consoles sold.

Specifically, a percentage of 360 have been hit with the higher than normal hardware failures. A percentage of ps3 sales have gone to people who only buy it as a cheap bluray player. And the wii has a percentage of super casual gamers who may feel quite happy only playing the wii sports bundled game.

That's why it's better to look at software sales, or even how many people get on xbox Live at any given time. Going only by console sales will always be misleading.

JVODKA

I always wondered how much of the hardware sales numbers from 360's are from people buying multiple systems to replace their 360's that burnt up (before the 3 year warranty or because it was 4 rings or a drive issue, or just because they are impatient and want one now and cant wait for 2 weeks).

When I sent off my 360 I had no problems what so ever with customer service on the phone. It probably helps because I was nice on the phone. That was aided by the fact that I traded a card with 50 dollars store credit on it for a RRoD 360 because that customer didnt know about the 3 year warranty so my 360 was in effect free.

Oh well. Now it's dvd drive is failing (starting to scratch disks) so it looks like I'm going to have to order a replacement from somewhere and fix it myself.

Derigor

You'd like to think that, but not really.

I used to work for a broadband ISP as a technician. We had a series of procedures the tech support reps would go through with the customer to determine if a technician had to be sent on-site.

Now, if the technician showed up on-site and it turned out the problem was covered by the procedure on the phone and you lied, you'd end up paying my hours and transport. It was in the ToS. And it wasn't cheap.

My 360 is the first launch console to last me over a year in 3 generations of hardware. Then again it might be that i'm particularly careful with it, unlike shown in the picture, there is nothing on top of it and it's on a DVD box to facilitate air flow, only plug self powered things in USB ports, etc. I agree that you shouldn't have to this and that doesn't mean they won't break at some point but what can you do.

But i certainly wouldn't leave my 360 set up like in the picture, and if i were on my 4rth i would give it up already (then again i went through 4 ps1, so maybe i'd just bite the bullet).

Fabrice

You know there's something wrong when you feel blessed because your 360 "only" RROD'd once (plus the obvious freezes and DREs). Or when "RROD" becomes a verb.

But is MS's customer service in the US so bad that you'd need this kind of "tip" to get anywhere? While I hated having to send in my console for repairs, at least the hotline people were semi-competent (or maybe completely incompetent, hence why they sent UPS for same-day pick-up without bothering any further).

Of course, it's not like they can afford to be glib with their customers, especially here in Europe where Microsoft has been in the European Commission's bullseye for quite a while.

@iamspoo: The non-English speaking whatever-they-were from Easyjet's baggage claims dept. were fun, too.
This is not charity. Microsoft (or Sony, or Nintendo) is a business. Customers give it money in return for products. When something goes wrong, they have an obligation, both morally and legally, to set it right in a timely fashion.

When they fail to do that, they deserve to lose customers, and therefore profits. That is the corrective built into the free market: poor service creates a market for companies who provide good service. Voting with one's feet is the only power customers have.

Taking five months to solve a problem which should have been corrected in a week is absolutely unacceptable. That kind of incompetence should be repaid by giving one's business to M$'s competitors. And that is exactly what I've done.

@Sailorcancer: LOL.. who said you can't learn anything from Fox news. Nothing says "friend" like opening an statement with the word darling.

The comment about the PS3 and RROD was just referencing an earlier story but it was poor humor on my part to do so and aggravate you.

On the bully topic, I remember fixing it by uninstalling all my games, deleting my saves, reformatting my hard drive then disconnecting from xbox live. It worked fine after that as long as I played it with my GH3 player.

Just to show that there's no hard feelings here, Here's the recipe for a jelly tube with meat rockets if you don't like paperweights:

1) Jelly
2) 1 Tube (2 Tubes for higher elevations)
3) Meat
4) and yes, of course, rockets.

enjoy.

okenny :)

I don't love my 360 that much but if I did, I would by at least 4 of them to show MS my support and to say thank you for the many hours of joy their hardware and Kameo have given me.

the fact that you have to do this is pathetic. it should be fixed by now. there's no excuse for still keeping this problem. knowing microsoft with their windows products, it's no surprise. oh well, this was the reason i didnt get a 360 and went with a ps3. well, one of the main ones. socom and my love for other playstation franchises was the next. im not investing $300+ on something that is faulty. Hope those that have the problem get it fixed as fast as they can. it would suck to have ur console broken. especially with the launch of gta.

Albanian_Killa
