But the mass transit system is a part of that whole big city "feel", and it's a bit weird to not have the subway as big a deal in Liberty as it is in NY (... or London, or Toronto, or any other large city of that nature... other than LA, of course). It's probably very hard to design, so the exclusion is understandable, but it's disappointing.

As a whole, Liberty City is a big step forwards but still lacks the amount of "character" that a real city has. Not having bagels is one thing, but it needs to have its own "special" food. People on the street (and cabbies! especially cabbies!) need to be obsessing over the equivalent to the Yankees, and cursing out the equivalent of the Red Sox. Restaurant workers dumping out into the streets after midnight looking for a good time at an all-night bar. A separate AI for tourists. You know, just the intangible stuff that makes a big city fun to be in.

Hopefully they have a couple of games' worth of refinment in them, because improving GTAIV as much as GTAIII was in its sequel would create something truly special. The city in this is most of the way there, but not *quite* what it could be yet.

I'm sure Rockstar could've pushed the graphic and A.I. engine to the fullest by putting at least double the amount of people found in the Square.

On topic, good article. I noticed that about the tolls too. One of the things I am surprisingly most disappointed in is that bridge going from Bohan to Dukes. If they had modeled all the other bridges in the game, couldn't they have made that a Throgs Neck or Whitestone instead of that plain thing it is?

I've known of people that would get drunk, take the train from philly-nyc(1.5hrs) and then back to philly again waking up thinking it's nyc still until they walk a few bocks and start realizing where they are. The center city districts of big cities feel eerily similar to each other, in fact many movies that are based in new york are shot in la or toronto.

I'd say from living just 2hrs from nyc and going there frequently, there is usually far more people roaming the streets but there would be so many to the point where the game would slow down to a crawl. Maybe if we were in the 3rd or 4th generation on ps3 it could be realistically done. I have the 360 version btw.

That was one of my favorite parts of VC. I had been worried that they made the game more "real" by having the mini-games be real world games (bowling, darts, pool, etc.) and not the "game" games from III and VC (I didn't play much SA it seemed too big) which I really enjoyed: racing, RC car bombs... Driving around the airport would have been fun but it nailed me with three stars (in IV I mean).

It seems a lot of people are having some difficulty with the "based on NYC" concept, and how "true" to NYC it should be. One funny thing I realized is that although the game world has Russia and Serbia, the game does not have a New York City. I know this is an odd (and somewhat meaningless) point, but the game "is real" geographically in that it has "Russia" like the real world, but essentially does not have "New York" except to the extent it has instead "Liberty City". So there are characters who are "Russian", and "Hispanic", and "Jamaican" (all in quotes since they are in-game), but there cannot be anyone who is a "New Yorker" unless there was another city that was New York, but then that city would have to be an odd copy of Liberty City since to be a New Yorker in-game a character would need references to many items in NYC/Liberty City to prove authenticity.

You can't forget the pizza in Brooklyn that is the real food in Bushwick at least for me and my fam. But the traveling is true everyone takes the train , not taxi's nor drive..trains. Also we gotta point out that if your looking for a hoe you will need to find a very dark alley way or back road off the beaten path since 5-0's are looking to bust hoe-ing big time. You'll be lucky to find one on a main street, umm. Maybe just to get something to eat or use a restuarant's restroom.

It's really hard to get cars without breaking the law.
The pedestrians have a bad habit of leaping out into traffic to become human speed bumps. (I do my best not to hurt anyone that isn't part of a mission, but pedestrians do seem to have a suicidal urge to walk into traffic when I have a green light. I think I'm around or over halfway though the game and I've only hit a few people, but it's still REALLY HARD to avoid.)
Some of the NPC drivers are really, really bad, so you end up rear-ending them or sideswiping them on accident. All cars in GTA seem to be about 30000 miles overdue for a brake job, so you aren't stopping on a dime at high speeds. Or low speeds. It's best to hit the brakes now if you think you are going to need to stop soon.
Some missions require to you drive fast while shooting at the car in front of you, who is doing his best to drive fast and lose you. Good luck putting all those shots into their car.
If one of the bad drivers is a cop (and some are!), your going to either have to run and hide or go to jail. If you go to jail, you lose all your guns, and that gets EXPENSIVE.
Nitpick - no speedometers or speed limits makes avoiding speeding kinda tough.

A "100% completion - zero civilian causalities" achievement would have some people crazy enough to get it, but I'm sure one of them wouldn't be me!

Why do so many New Yorkers think only rich Manhattanites own cars? Haven't you noticed that the vast majority of non-cab cars on the streets are brokedown junkers? That's because lots and lots of average people live in parts of the city where, if you have two kids and a dog, a car is nearly as necessary as it is in any other city.

When I lived in Bay Ridge, I owned a brokedown junker (and no, I didn't commute with it). And yes, there was never any parking. Why? Because everybody else owned a car too.

As for GTA: it got wrong that most New Yorkers prefer their hot dogs with the skin on. I mean, WTF?

1.They 'based' Liberty City from New York. They did not copy New York itself!! And when they said 'based', they meant just the look, not the lifestyle.

2.The game is not going to be fun if all the cars are just taxicabs! They called it Grand Theft Auto for a reason. Not "Whack-A-Guy and take the nearest transportation as your escape".

Liberty City will obviously not look and feel like New York because(and here comes the obvious) the game takes place in Liberty City, not New York City. LIVE WITH IT!

I would accept this argument if GTA:IV
s location is New York City. But it isnt.

Liberty City is not and will never be New York City.

What's with people and opinions? Yes we all have one, yes they all stink, no yours isn't more important than mine, etc. what drives people to basically rage and get outraged by the most inane things?

As for the article? He's spot on, I haven't played GTAIV yet (Yes I know, the shame) but those are the sort of things that make the difference between immersing yourself into a familiar environment or still having that brick wall that separates you from the game world. I spent way too much time in NYC as a kid and the things Totilo mentions are things that are easy to spot and very representative of the behavior of people.

Kudos to Rockstar for getting it 90% right and kudos to Totilo for pointing out there are still things missing.

I think I was running from the cops the other day and fled into a park and I could have sworn there were children playing in the park whom quickly became introduced to the front of my beat all to hell car, followed by a hoard of cops mowing the rest down with out a worry in the world....

Plus, Niko's cousin owns a taxi service...there couldn't be a more accurate circumstance for an eastern European immigrant in NYC to be driving around all the time.

@Pezdispenser: You're glad there are no bagels in the game? What, too ethnic for you? LOL yeah I'm sure Rockstar plans to make the next GTA take place in Texas. It'll be called Grand Theft Pickup, and every mission would consist of driving around drunk talking about football.

If it were any more like NYC then people would complain that it's promoting violence in real life scenarios. Where as, if it isn't, people will complain that it isn't anything like a real life city.

Sarcasm aside, if you're willing to find faults in a game that aren't really there, you deserve the backlash. Reason number six alone has me wondering why the author thought he had a valid basis for the post to begin with.

haha you were right, that is a good read for a good laugh. that writer sure does need to learn how to talk to his readers, despite how critical they might
