I am surprised that so many people want to do custom soundtracks. I can understand that for a racing game, but GTA is immersive and I feel like that kind of thing pulls you out of that rich world. Why not put personal photos on all of the billboards so that you feel like you are at home?

kingofallcosmos

Actually, Rockstar used our service to get their stuff into Amazon. I got a chance to work closely with the R* folks, they're really cool. Our delivery time is about six hours, and we don't take any of the money from the sales, so it was a no-brainer for them.

It's great to hear music while playing the game and know, hey, I helped get that into the stores!

Two things:

a) It's Rockstar's niche tastes. They actually pride themselves on this (mainstream ain't cool, yo), but it also means that half the music they like frankly sucks. They like it because nobody else does outside of their little group of friends. Well, sometimes there's a reason for that.

b) Honestly, this has to be the worst-publicized "service" I've ever seen, and I guarantee nobody - nobody - is going to buy music tracks this way. I've had the game since day one and I had no idea this even existed. I read a NY Times article about it the other day and I was like "huh?" I still have no idea how to even do it. (You could say that kind of publicity sure won't hurt... but I guarantee most GTA players are not regular New York Times readers.)

I think it's a good predictor of the future - someday people probably will regularly buy music this way - but I doubt this iteration of this service is going to be anymore mainstream than many of the songs on the soundtrack.

badasscat

@SlowDeath420: I agree. The soundtrack disc that came with the special edition is garbage if you hate rap. Rocky Mountain High and Stand Up Jamrock are the only songs on it I like, but the game its self has a brilliant soundtrack. So many stations worth listening to, unlike Vice City, where all I listened to was VRock, or SA, where Radio X and K-DST were the only thing I listened to.

Also, is this issue why none of the songs I identify with ZiT! show up on my R* Social Club don't show up?

RageKage

Ok so I like the music in GTA4. A lot. Some of it I even had already, a reflection of how well my taste generally seems to mesh with R* musically in this case.

What I don't get, is WHERE THE FUCK....is my CD/Tape/etc player for playing songs off my HDD (360 vers). Thats the whole reason I bought the Xbox1 version of all three previous GTA titles, so I could play my own music after I inevitably get tired of the in-game music.

Yes, sorry, no matter how much I like a set of tracks, in this case the ones in GTAIV, any playlist where the track count<infinity gets="" old="" for="" me="" eventually.=""></infinity>

A very, very minor gripe on what has so far been a masterpiece of a sequel, but the reason I mention it here is that I can only surmise this deal with Amazon and the ZITS concept in general to be responsible. Its also a bit annoying in light of their recent "fuck casuals" statement, MP3 player support in-game is about the least casual feature I can think of.

Yes, you can do it with the Xbox dash player. Problem is that doesn't integrate well with the game, plays over cutscenes and other vocals, etc. Music should play in vehicles, like its always been.

DaiMacculate
