What an obtuse comment made by the author of this article. Anyone who thinks that Jedi Outcast/Academy's lightsaber fighting was like that didn't put enough time into the game to discover what their "button mashing" was actually doing.

It doesn't have to be perfect 1:1, just close, plus they could implement some sort of knockback/recovery time so that when your wiimote keeps going when the onscreen one stops, you'd have time to get back into position.

You're failing to remember that a lot of the training and practice that goes into being a "real" swordsman is to do with the actual sword. It takes a higher degree of skill and training to wield an actual blade because your movements need to be fluid while compensating for the weight and balance of the blade. Not to mention when sword fighting you have to deal with the force of another blade striking yours.

None of these are a factor with the Wiimote, it's not heavy or unbalanced and you don't have to worry about hitting anything else (unless someone is standing a little too close). With a "weapon" that light and easy to wield any untrained person with decent reactions could go against an AI.

You can't have 1:1. What happens if you swing and it gets blocked. It's not like your motion is gonna stop as well. It's a nice idea in theory but it just can't happen in any thing that's even remotely fast paced. And if they could figure out a way to actually stop your hand from moving with some type of force feedback it brings the problem of people don't actually know how to fight with swords for the most part. There's too many flaws in even attempting 1:1.

If this is online, this is going to be an instant purchase for me. The online multiplayer ALONE (if supported by enough people playing), would be INSANE with the Wiimote and the levels, and running around collecting power-ups and throwing people into space.

At the very least I could see Star Wars fans that are Wii owners making this one a bit of a cult classic.

If you never palyed Jedi Knight multi or did and didn't like it, you aren't very well qualified to diagnose the quality of this game. JKO and JKA multiplayer is deceptively simplistic, and it takes a patience to understand most people aren't willing to give. Having played those games for 6 years and understanding how amazingly fun 2 directions of control are, I've long known that the 1:1 movement everyone here gets a hardon for is not only impossible, but a plain waste of thought. If you took JKA multiplayer and added the depth of control shown here, you would have what I consider the greatest multiplayer game of all time.

If you have no basis for comparison, don't go to the far end of the spectrum expecting it to be the best option. 1:1 movement is so consuming that it takes the things that make great combat and makes them impossible.

@Totorototoro: I think 1:1 controls sound interesting to say the least. I just wonder if it's not implemented do to a limitaion of the Wii or it's stirctly because of a gameplay design. Maybe Microsoft can give it a try with their "Wii contoller"? Hurry take the Yahoo money and throw it at Lucas.

That being said I'm as typical star wars gamer as the next guy but something about this whole project has never excited me, except the wii version. All they seem to show of the 360/PS3 version is the different ways you can pick up people and toss them. Looks like a tech demo, hopefully it will pan out.

Here we go again with the "sword experts" who think 1:1 combat is desirable by 99% of gamers. Anyone with any experience in Kendo knows how difficult it is to actually swing a sword accurately.

1:1 motion controls SOUND great-they don't necessarily make for great gameplay-regardless of how good your cosplay costume may look while you are playing :p

Developers-don't be swayed by the inevitable whining by the 1% of gamers who think everything has to be 1:1-just focus on making the experience enjoyable.

The controls look rather sloppy, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt until I play it. I think I'm going to get the Xbox360 version for sure, and depending how good the control is on this Wii version I might get that too.

Honestly, if the controls are bunk, then really I don't know what to say. The Wii's been out for a year and a half and theres still nothing that even comes close to 1:1 motion controls. The cake is a lie!

I wasn't really interested in this game at first, seemed like the most exciting aspect of it is the physics engines but other than that it's just another Star Wars game. The Duel Mode got me interested though. Until I found out it's 2 player only, no online or playing against the computer. I never have anybody around to play games with I'd never get to use it.

@Vetterli: Do the graphics really matter? If you want fantastic graphics, go PS3 or Xbox, the Wii is about gameplay, and this seems to deliver that, wiimote lightsaber-ing.

And to everyone who is disappointed because it's not perfect controlls, what other Wii games have? LoZ didn't, and that game was amazing. And I'm pretty sure, but not positive, that No More Heroes wasn't either.

So far the Wiimote has been a pretty big let down. It's just not responsive enough or sometimes it is too responsive, causing the character to do something unwanted or vice versa. I imagine this title will be a let down, waggle just isn't cutting it anymore. :( I hope I will be wrong come September.

It's called third parties being morons.

Anyone who knows anything about actual sword fighting knows they cannot program games to 1 to 1 movement for the simple fact that any decent AI could never be defeated by anyone who hadn't been trained in sword fighting. Hence why 1 to 1 swordfighting will never occur in games.

Do people not think that developers actually tried it out? The wiimote can do 1 to 1. Reason it doesn't is because people are not trained swordfighters and would never be able to defeat any AI opponet programmed to fight like a real swordsman.

why do the wii graphics look crapier than ps2 games? Isn't the wii suposedly a overclocked GC? Wasn't the GC way more powerful than the ps2?...

as i recall reading, i think from kotaku a while back that it is not 1:1 light sabe controllers with the wiimote, but it comes close. I'll totally buy it either way.

I'd just like to say that I won't be buying neither Wii or Xbox version: I won't be buying this game. It looks mediocre in all senses of the word. A mid 80 which should be given a solid fifty-something.

It just doesn't look very interesting.

You'd be better off getting it for PS3 or 360...much, MUCH better graphics.

It's looks like fun, except I usually play alone at home -- unless it's online. Plus, I'm not sure it's worth it to buy two versions of the game just for that. I'll probably end up just buying the 360 version ... although, the PSP one sounds tempting, too.

@Vetterli: After been playing games like GTA4 and Skate I have to agree the animations do seem a little brash. Since the game is using Euphoria though I'm hoping the animations meet are expectations from this hype train and more.

27 Chars sounds nice. The gameplay looks a little cluttered though, there seems to be way to much going on in the levels that can interrupt a fight.
Oh well, I'm probably still gonna buy it- I just hope it'll be fun.

@Owen - yes, I can easily imagine people shelling out for a Wii just to play this.

Hmmm, I think the animation looks rather edgy. Maybe it's just because it's so fast paced but it doesn't look that smooth to me.

I'm still not really feeling this Wiimote as a lightsaber thing. Only recognising 5 movements is not really the total control feel I had in mind when I "instantly imagined myself using it as a lightsaber".
