The one thing Fallout Boy does that can even be considered remotely special is vocals, and to me it's the most annoying singing I have ever heard. Tiny Tim's lilt is more pleasing to my ear than that. I like a lot of music with...interesting vocals. But the one thing I cannot stand is that man singing (or from a female vocalist, a pouty baby doll voice). I'll even admit that indie darling Modest Mouse features lousy singing, so don't think I'm just ragging on pop music.

We're not saying people aren't allowed to like it. We could care less. But don't try to make it out to be more than it is. Formulaic, derivative, packaged to sell, and occasionally irritating. In the music world, garbage is just as appetizing as pie; it's personal taste. But there's no denying that one might be rotten and the other freshly made.

I find Delonge's voice grating and his new band to be insufferably pretentious at times. That being said, they still write some pretty catchy material and a handful of tracks off their first two albums are quite commendable, and that's why I'm happy to see them represented on Rock Band.

You have a point: being catchy or popular doesn't automatically equate with talent. I guess that's where I'll break with impartiality and admit that I think FOB's members are talented. I honestly don't listen to much pop-punk for the very reasons outlined by Kanti_V2 -- so much of it is generic and samey. However, the only band that's even come close to what I feel is FOB's high-level execution of the genre was Panic! at the Disco, and their sudden love affair with The Beatles/Kinks/Beach Boys basically axed that competition. Yes, it's somewhat annoying that I find myself in the company of preening teenage girls and emo losers, but I'm not going to count heads before I decide whether I do or don't like a certain group. If 100 other bands are doing it, that's fine. Until one of them comes around that sounds better than the pack leader, I'll be satisfied with just the leader.

Also, thanks for not automatically presuming my interest in FOB precludes me from listening to "more talented" groups. I'm a big Rush fan and follow the entire CandyRat roster of fingerstyle guitarists very closely, and I'll be damned if anyone can classify those guys as formulaic. Apparently liking certain bands enters you into an exclusivity contract against all other forms of music. Who knew?

I will agree with you originality is pretty much dead. a friend told me an amusing quote a while back it goes something like "copy 1 person its plagiarism, copy 2 people you're an asshole, copy 3 people its a homage, copy 4 people its an original idea. I may not have gotten it exactly right but that's the overall gist. and i totally agree.

Yes, I am a musician, thanks for asking. I've been playing guitar for half my life. And of course it's easy to write pop-punk, just like it's easy to write for almost any other popular genre. That's what accounts for the complete market saturation of the genre. However, to write pop-punk that stands above the rest takes effort and some semblance of talent. And guess what? Fall Out Boy does that.

Let's get specific for a second. One one hand, you have bands like All Time Low who seem to write the same song over and over, and they achieve a modicum of success, sure -- but to get to where Fall Out Boy is, you have to do it better than your peers. You have to mix things up and keep things interesting. A lot of bands now try to sound like Fall Out Boy (don't assume my problem is underexposure, because I assure you it isn't); most of them fail horribly. If FOB weren't doing something right, wouldn't another band have stepped up to rival them by now? And don't tell me it's nothing but marketing either, because FOB rose to prominence like any other band from the Chicago punk scene -- endless touring and grassroots promotion at the start.

And yes, of course they take a lot from the bands that came before them; originality in music is dead, and I never claimed otherwise. What I said is that they do what they do well, and it's fun to listen to. Stop being such a conceited purist and pay attention to the actual points of my argument. I never claimed offense, merely disappointment that people can't enjoy music for music, and that it always has to turn into a circle jerk about who has superior taste. I listen to a multitude of genres and artists, and don't feel the need to herald musical complexity and technique above all else. It's why I can't get into Dream Theater much. You can have the best musical chops in the world and still fail to deliver an interesting product at the end of the day.

So please, dear lord, stop trying to pick a fight here with presumption and dick-stroking. Just because something is simple doesn't mean it's bad, and just because something isn't original doesn't mean it's bland. Rise above your petty labels and obsession with hierarchies and you might just find not every band has to reinvent the wheel to be tolerable, or maybe even, GASP -- fun.

The only skill involved is that of the marketing directors, and of the original punk bands they bastardize. Just because you got your little feelings hurt doesn't mean that everyone here is saying they suck as a matter of opinion, or to be cool, you might just have to face the fact that they actually have no talent. There is a simple formula that anyone can follow to make those songs, your problem is that you're uneducated in music, and such have VERY low standards. And try to keep in mind there are HUNDREDS of bands that do the exact same thing, and do it better, they just don't happen to have a marketing team behind them, so you assume they don't exist.

You shouldn't begrudge people for having higher standards than you, there's nothing wrong having appreciation for music that rises above the chaff. If you're happy with generic, bland, re-hashed, formulaic crap, then good for you. You seem to be very proud of the fact. And you're lucky to be an American music consumer right now, because there's no shortage of it.

Fall Out Boy and Angels & Airwaves play well written and tightly constructed pop music, and they do it better than most other bands in their genre. But of course if some ditzy teenage girls like it, then it must be bad music, and the cool people will not only avoid it, but loudly proclaim their avoidance on the Internet. Because they're just that cool.

Look, I might not be the biggest fan of either of these bands, but I will not deny their musical talent as some sort of roundabout stab at credibility. Say what you will about FOB, they're one of the most talented pop-punk bands out there today. Naggingly catchy melodies and hooks are their trade, and they ply it well. If that's not your cup of tea, fine, but your cock doesn't get any bigger by saying they suck. They don't. You just don't like their brand of music. But lots of other people do.

Same with AVA; sure, they're basically just new-wave Blink 182 if The Edge were their guitarist, but they're endowed with the same pop sensibilities that Tom Delonge gave to his old band. Sure, he auto-tunes the hell out of his vocals, but the final compositions are still fun to play and sing along to. And that's all it comes down to in the end; fun.

People, this is Rock Band. It's not your personal CD collection to show off to friends and prove how awesome you are through a collection of tunes you had no part in creating. I know it's a scary world out there with a lot of choices for entertainment, and the sheer volume can be overwhelming. But dismissing things out of hand for cool points is not the way to go about things. Stop being so self-conscious about this stuff. You're playing with plastic Fisher Price-esque instruments. Looking cool should not be your priority here.

Between the rasping gurgling, shouts of panic, and the tinkling sound of falling metal instruments, there was the scream. A scream so awful, so gut wrenching, so nightmarishly haunting that it could only come from the unbridled horror of waking up to see your own chest spread wide open, and your own beating heart laying before you.

That was the worst thing I ever heard in my entire life, until I heard Fall Out Boy. My god they fucking suck, it's the worst most generic shit ever, and no other band has such an insipid and vacuously stupid following. I hope they die.

P.S. - The other bands suck too. Disappointing update.

But anyone who doesn't love Yeah Yeah Yeahs has either never heard them (aside from "Maps"), doesn't like good rock music, or is just an idiot. I say bully to the great people at Harmonix (who would be great regardless) for giving the world more YYY in "Rock Band". "Date with the Night" is a spectacular song, and as far as playing it in the game is concerned, one that won't be as boring for guitarists and will seriously challenge vocalists. Some weeks have awesome DLC, some have not-so-awesome DLC, but any week with Yeah Yeah Yeahs is a week that has at least one spectacular song.
