Well, one of the more useful aspects I find is that if I've got LDraw/MLCad running on the desktop, I can look up what colors a specific LEGO part has been released in so I know how I may need to adjust the color scheme or physical shape of a model I'm designing before finalizing a design only to find out that it's physically impossible to build.

If looking at the topic from a productivity standpoint then it depends on what tasks you are trying to accomplish (and how many of them there are). If you use both screens for a single task then productivity may go up as you have more workspace. However, the use of 2 separate computers would require you to later combine the results of your work which may undo the desired productivity effect.

If you are working on 2 completely separate tasks, your productivity should decrease (though you may feel like you are getting more done). Think about it. If it took you 1 hour to complete each task, then doing them consecutively would take 2 hours. However, if switching you would have to take into account the time it takes to transition from one activity to another (regardless of how minimal). Also, after one hour, working consecutively results in 1 completed task while working simultaneously may result in each task being half completed (ideally).

The only time I really use two computers at once is to troubleshoot a bad one and look up solutions on a good one. Otherwise I'm happy with just one PC at a time.

I regularly use 3 computers simultaneously (5 if you count VMs). I have a dual monitor setup on my desktop, and a laptop next to it.

Synergy2 is my VKVM.

The lappy runs email/web/IM with a VM for P2P and Software testing.
The Desktop runs my productivity apps, media apps, and games, with a VM for a home server, and a remote session for my work computer.

I'm adding a 2nd and 3rd lappy for other miscellaneous tasks as I see fit - or to offload the load from the VMs.

My kid is potty training. He pooped in the corner overnight, after put his diaper back on when he ran around the room peeing. Kids are great!

Nah... I just use my 15" LCD monitor and 32" HDTV at the same time. It does much improve efficiency since you don't have to constantly flip between screens to try and find what you're looking for. If I didn't have both of them for doing my Java Programming homework it could easily add an hour or two a week.

Something like that here, too. Except I use the laptop for the bulk of my surfing (so it collects all the nasty spyware) and photo editing, and I use the desktop to run LDraw/MLCad, play games, and make online purchases/payments. I also travel with the laptop, which is why I use it for the internet (no point in keeping it sparkly clean at home if I use it for the internet when I'm not).

I use triple monitors. A 19" wide screen LCD in the middle, and 2 17" LCD's to either side. The center 19" is also hooked to a 4 port KVM, which has 2 thin clients connected to it in addition to my primary workstation. The fourth channel on the KVM is for whatever im working on at the time.

A second vote for Synergy. Cross-OS one-mouse, one-keyboard integration. Better than a KVM. Also free.

At my last job, I couldn't get IT to give me a second monitor, so I just grabbed an extra walkup PC that no one was using. I can attest that dual computers with a single keyboard/mouse is way more productive than just two monitors if you have them configured correctly. You can take advantage of different OSes, different browsers, different versions of software...

Of course, unless you've actually got two machines, the investment may not be worth the productivity gains the way it is for just a second monitor.

I'm using three computers at home: One Gentoo Linux box, a small Windows XP machine and a PowerMac G4. They share the single keyboard and mouse that I have via Synergy2 (client/server program to share the mouse and keyboard over a local network to multiple machines, each with their own monitor), and I find that I can get a tonne of stuff done. One machine will be cranking out tunes, the other will have a browser open, whilst the third will have a bunch of terminal windows open where the actual work occurs.

My dad does that. He has his older computer from 2002 and his Vista laptop which he got in February. I gave him a Wireless mouse for Christmas. And now, I always forget which mouse is connected to which computer. Personally, I just use my laptop, but I do multitask. I use my laptop and play with my Wii(no pun intended),watch TV, or play with my DS or some combination of the three.

I use 3 computers here at work, a mac, pc and linux machine. I found that synergry works great for a multiple computer setup. You can control all machines with 1 keyboard and mouse(no need for a kvm switch) you can also copy and paste text from one machine to another.

I have two PCs at work: My workstation (well, not mine, its the company's) and my laptop (this ones really mine) for music and extra projects, and even the odd multimedia (image, video, sound, stuff for websites, etc) production requeriment.

Ony thing im proud off of, its that besides Windows Vista (blergh) wich came bundled with the laptop, everything else in it is OPEN SOURCE! Hurray for open source!

I have 4 computers running on 3 screens. On my desk from left to right is: Laptop (light tasks), 22" LG widescreen LCD, 22" Acer widescreen LCD. The 2 LCD's are connected to all 3 of my computers via KVM switches (one of them daisy-chained which works suprisingly well). Although it's a wiring nightmare, it really allows me to work productively on multiple screens depending on what I need to do. I can have email/scheduling/billing open on the laptop, with data management apps on another screen, and remote connections to clients on the 3rd. It works very well for multi-tasking.

Of course when it's slow, I can use my heavy duty work/gaming rig for games or movies or TV with the HTPC and I have my PS3 attached to the other - the advantages of working at home (besides being able to work in your pajamas).

Studies show that more than one monitor, or a larger monitor at that, increases productivity. That's why I invested in a 22" monitor on top of my older 19" CRT (1600x1200 can't be questioned).

I used to use a laptop as well as my desktop when I had a large desk that wasn't cluttered. Though generally it's too much to deal with normally (switch from one computer back to the other back to the other back to the other...)

Maybe your computer's are just nicely suited for slow. If they're slow enough, you can do something on one and switch to the other until the first one finishes loading, and keep doing that. But that's unnecessary nowadays. Time to get away from that Mac, I saw.

Welcome to my world Bash. Be careful though... it can make you look like a freak. While at home I'm always on both my desktop and my laptop, attention split between both evenly.

When I'm in my cave (my room) plotting the end of the world (on both computers at once) no one will even try to talk to me. They say it's like I'm in a trance... Every attempt at contact is met with a very insincere smile and nod.

Two computer setup is handy. I have PC that I use for all the heavy lifting, and Mac that runs music, email, calendar, chats, etc. Less windows on top of eachother, and no goddamn instant messengers popping up to interrupt my work. You just have to find what to run on each machine, and big enough table for the input devices, especially when if have wacom, mouse, trackball, two keyboards, 3d connexion navigator, gamepads, etc...

I dual screen myself. My main work monitor is also taken to trade shows, so I keep my backup monitor attached to my work machine. Since I'm the type to have 12 billion windows open at once, I use a virtual desktop manager as well and group my desktops on certain jobs. (Desktop Manager 0.5.3 on OS X 10.4.)

It LOOKS pretty chaotic, but I think I've got a system down that works for me.

Nice things about having a "trade show" monitor: I get to have a 24" monitor about 50 weeks of the year.
Bad things about having a trade show monitor: The weeks I'm on just the 19" backup are kind of painful. :-P

When I use two computers I constantly grab the wrong mouse. I look at the screen trying to figure out why the cursor isn't moving. Dual monitors on one computer works better for me.

I've got a desktop and a laptop. Desktop's for games and the laptop is for school. I only have both on at home when transferring files.

Don't try to burn the candle at both ends for too long. It's not good for your health either.
