But Beck is actually completely correct in his statements about a soldier's propensity to take the first shot in combat at a human. If anyone would really like to learn more about this, pick up a copy of Lt. Col. Dave Grossman's "On Killing". Overcoming the human adversity to taking life is actually very difficult, and video games are pretty good at it. Does that make a normal kid into a mass murderer? No, not at all, it just makes it easier. I say this with over 10 years of experience working in an industry that trains professional law enforcement in the taking of human life should the need arise. What I thought was neat about GTA however, is it gives you choices a lot of the time. No where in the game do I HAVE to bang a hoe and take her dough, but if I'm evil I can chose to do that. I can chose to run people down on the sidewalk, hell you can even chose if you want to take revenge on the two people who've wronged you. Funny how Beck doesn't mention that, but no, that would imply we had the ability to make decisions for ourselves, not to mention the ability to keep our children from playing this sort of game.

I slightly disagreed, but understood it. He just doesn't blame Video games, he blames culture. And he's right. Many may disagree, but it's silly to assume that culture doesn't dictate our life styles to some extent. You may choose to do something else, but you are you, you aren't everyone. I'm also seeing comments about there not being a chainsaw in the game. I'm not sure about GTA4, but for the other installments, I'm pretty sure there were chainsaws. And there might be some in this game. But I don't know.

One more thing, dispite how many may feel, our army has been using video games as training simulators. they have a powerful affect, of which many don't realize. I'm not saying everyone is going to be trained or so. But It would be outright FOOLISH to assume that you or others won't be trained.

I usually avoid hitting people as much as possible. When it comes to prostitutes, I really don't care about that at all. I still haven't bothered to pick up a hooker, because even though you can do it, it's not that interesting to be honest. I just think Rockstar added the prostitute feature to underline the factor for freedom in GTA. Also, while the game has a lot of violence and gore, the game is an M-rated game. If people looked past the most immediate impressions of crude entertainment people would find a lot of content which satirizes popular culture in clever radio commercials and banners, NPC banter and the like. The problem with these anti-video game politicians and media figures is that they barely invest any time into the game, and thus never really get a good overview of how the games work.

I am reading the book "On Killing" by Dave Grossman. He uses the same data on WWII and Korea and makes the strong point that training has influenced soldier's likelihood of shooting the enemy. The parallels in media to this training are quite strong. It doesn't mean people are more likely to go out and act violently, but that they are more likely to use violence as opposed to flight, or posturing if put in a situation where it is a possible option.

On a less facetious note, the thing I find most strange about this is how he is able to trot out "facts" to support his claims that I can't find any evidence for. It is true the number of TV's in the US rocketed during the 1950s [< 10,000 (1945), 6,000,000 (1950), 60,000,000 (1960)]. By 1960 around 9/10 households had a TV. However, the justice and research association has figures for homicides over that time period ([www.jrsa.org] - pages 38 and 39). During the 1950's the homicide rate (per 100,000 population) did not double but in fact remained essentially the same for the whole time. For the whole time the number of television sets was increasing exponentially there was no change in the murder rate. It's worrying that he can say things which are apparently untrue on national television, to back up his already pretty ridiculous arguments.

There IS a chainsaw in 4 (and yes, it is called GTA 4 so therefore, it is the official 4th version and not some spinoff) and can be unlocked via hacks or eastereggs. His argument was taken out of context, as most is, and people missed the point that video games were originally intended to train soldiers when this type of content was used. When we were kids, the games' most violent moments were throwing a fireball at a Goomba, not aiming a 9 at a police officer.

Your opinion concerning GTA IV is at best laughable. Your bias on the subject was clearly shown by having 2 anti M rated game advocates on your show without even providing a counter balance for an issue that deserves a more nuanced approach. As an independent thinking objective 23 year old its clear to me that your rants are the equivalent of the criticism given to Elvis , rock n' roll , comic books, heavy metal/rap and dare I say Jonathan Swift's ' A Modest Proposal' for its portrayal of human expression and or commentary. GTA IV is a satire of what is wrong with America not vice versa. Trying to blame GTA for people claiming they emulate its gameplay is as trivial & sardonic as blaming your show for registered Republicans who happen to kill registered Democrats. The people who claim they were compelled to act because of violent videogames are the same percentage of the population who's brains haven't fully developed. As someone smarter than you once said "you can't cure stupid".

1) This was on CNN, not Fox, so all the Fauxnews comments are just stupid.

2) This guy is an idiot. THIS guy. Of course, that doesn't stop the idiots here from immediately using him to paint the entire religious right, or even anyone who happens to be christian. But these are probably the same people who immediately get outraged when news commentators paint GAMERS as violent when the whole "Knifing in GTA line" story broke.

And since all of them are talking about all that "adult only" stuff you can do in the game.. isn't that luring MORE underaged kids to get a hold of this game ? I mean I remember when i was still under 18 i'd always like to get those games that were thought to be too violent or whatever, just because i wasn't 17 or 18 or whatever age yet. Sure they're trying to stop parents from getting the games for the kids but with the internet.. you can find anything pretty easily if you know where to look. I also remember something like violence on TV actually has been statistically proven to increase violent acts but it's not exactly the same about video games ?

Two other highlights in the video:
"TV caused a doubling of the homicide rate." WHA? I would be willing to believe that "The increase in widespread TV ownership coincided with an increase in the homicide rate." But as we all know, correlation does not imply causality.

"Every body always says 'Games are just harmless fun.'" Do they? I'm a gamer, and certainly don't think that video games "harmless," especially when you're talking about letting an 8 year-old play GTA. And it's certainly a stretch to say "every body" feels that way; I'd say that in fact a minority of people feel that way.

This is all just fear-mongering. As gamers, I beleive we do ourselves a disservice when we get overly riled about it.
