While I enjoyed the movies you mentioned, if all were like them, I don't know if I would bother to watch them all. It would simply get too heavy, too repetetive, variation is always good. I'm personally happy that not all boils down to serious business, I know it would be hard for me to get through my daily life without any entertainment. While I agree that games have potential to be used for much more than just simple fun, that's important too. Gaming will eventually mature to have titles like the movies you mentioned, but as for now, other medias will handle that.

Time also selected Stalin as Person of the Year in 1940, these are not "Best person on planet" nominations, they are about people who influence lives of the people, be it horrifying, or trivial fun. There is no deep meanings behind any of Miyamoto's games. He's created lots of fun games but something equivalent to ohhh, Schindler's List or Ghandi?

That's the problem. There's a difference between escapism media which while fun, is lowest common denominator and political / humanitarian media which can be used to effect world society in a way that is absolutely positive.

What I'm arguing against is the acceptance of games staying in a childish state. The Time list just shows that society views escapist media as more important to their individual lives than trying to do something truly noble. We know that rabid fanboyism is not a good influence on society.

What's sad is that the list plays up negative stereotypes of first world countries.

It shows we care more about individual pleasure than greater global responsibility and that's what is negative about it.

Sure, as you said, creating rabid fanboyism can be considered a form of influence but you also have to ask is it a good influence or a bad one in light of where it is on the list?

Wait you just compared a n64 game, to GTA4, completely, and I mean, COMPLETELY, different games. They have 2 similarities: They are 3d games, and they are third person.

Not to mention, that OoT got a ten, from most places.

OoT has a 99/100 metacritic score (essentially an average of reviews from all over the place), and so does GTA4, but OoT has a 9.2 user rating, where as GTA4 has an 8.3.

When you have to compare (insert title here) with a 12 year old game, to make yourself feel better:

Now, I know this will probably piss people off , but I've lost a lot of respect for Nintendo and Miyamoto lately. It doesn't really seem like they're trying anymore. I mean I used to be a hardcore Nintendo fanboy, the first console I played was the SNES, the first 3 consoles I owned were a GBC, a GBA, and a Gamecube (which was my favorite last-gen console), and most of my best gaming memories are on pre-Wii Nintendo consoles, but the Wii is just kind of depressing. When they make something NEW that is as awesome as Pikmin was, then maybe I'll be interested, but for now, you've failed me Miyamoto.

Also, Most influential person shouldn't be decided by readers, as they clearly have no clue as to what's important.

@Fallible: Ah yes, you mentioned Tetris and Pacman, I claimed they haven't gone anywhere since their first iteration, and you said that recapped Mario nicely and my tired mind completely forgot you mentioned Sunshine. If comparing Galaxy to Sunshine, differences are certainly lesser as the series builds upon itself. Varying gravity and the wiimote waggle would be the biggest new things then, eh? Not much, but kept the game new and interesting at least for the few hours I've played it. I haven't actually played through any of the Mario games after World, not my type of games. Thankfully Mario games are not all Miyamoto produces.

@ara: I'm starting to think the same, you seem to be skimming through my posts and picking up on choice words to try and pick holes into. I believe my comparison in terms of Mario was Sunshine, but I'd even go to Mario 64. If you can honestly say that there are noticeable differences in terms of gameplay other than the added waggle I'd be surprised.

I'm a believer in 'if it is not broken, do not fix it' but after a few generations it just gets boring. Brawl and Mario Kart, for example. My opinion though, might not be yours.

I'm way too tired to list all the features in Mario Galaxy, but you honestly think that it's gameplay hasn't advanced at all from the side scroller where you could run to right (little left too), crouch and jump? Honestly? The series is certainly incremental, next title always building upon the previous, so only few of the Galaxy's features are new, but the series evolves quite nicely.

As an example let's take Mario and Metroid, and their latest incarnations, I found nothing improved in terms of gameplay in either from their earlier releases on DS and GC, Hunters and Sunshine specifically.

In all honesty I found Galaxy worse than Mario Brothers on the DS - which I still play regularly.

Nintendo uses the same characters over and over again, but they use them in various genres, and always improve and add new game play elements. With DS, Wii and all his games he certainly influences more people every day than any other game developer does, people that did use to play games before, as well as us who have been gaming our whole lives.

@mva5580: Yep, GTAIV is exactly like London in it's boring storyline and 'nothing-special' cinematic views. MGS hasn't told a good story since the NES has it? Call of Duty hasn't taken the step from WWII shooters into Modern Warfare and added a multiplayer system that has become vastly successful. This entire paragraph is, of course, sarcasm. The next one isn't.

I'm inclined to agree with FF, Halo and DMC. I don't know enough about Elder Scrolls to comment but the rest is generic material that's churned out and given acclaim.

As for the time - nomination. Good for him. Though I always feel a bit bad with these 'awards' of some sort. I'd rather have awards that target a team or a company. The time that one person can be significant in a whole area has passed in my opinion, and it would make a lot more people happy.
