After some thought, I've come to the conclusion that the PS3 is the better buy. Imagine my reaction at learning that the options for buying one today range from bad to worse.

SonyStyle.com lists an 80GB model with DualShock3 and Metal Gear Solid 4 for $500. Perfect, I would buy this today if I could. However, there is no word as to when it will actually become available. Estimates range from June (SonyStyle.com) to "at least August" (Sony shill met randomly at a bar). PlayStation.com does not even mention an 80GB model -- only the 40GB is listed.

The other option is to buy the 40GB model for $400. Together with the cost of a DualShock3 controller, we have $450 -- 90% of the advertised price for the upcoming 80GB model, above, for a system with 1/2 the drive space, 1/2 the ports, no card slots and no backward compatibility.

If the 80GB model is released for $500 anytime soon, anyone who bought the 40GB today would feel ripped off. Not only that, but there's some chance they'd simultaneously drop the price on the 40GB at that time, killing its resale value even if one wanted to trade up!

I just had to summarize this here -- this way of doing business by Sony is nothing short of baffling. Basically:

Sony: the killer app for this generation of console's was just released. You can't buy our flagship product, and we won't tell you when you can, because we want to get rid of the last of these crappy versions first. Buy one!

Microsoft: buy an Xbox 360 today, with GTA4, and we'll give you a $30 discount (Xbox 360 + GTA4 on Amazon for $380 total. Free shipping.)

I'm glad to see that you say they're about the same. I don't own a PS3, but I was considering buying one if this game was far and away better on the PS3. I do agree with the guy who said in his post that he liked the dualshock controller better, but I'm (slowly but surely) getting used to the 360 controller for other games. Never played any GTA versions on it, though.

Here's another thought...every store I've been to in my area (Pittsburgh) - including GameStop, WalMart, BestBuy, Circuit City, Costco, and Target - have had loads of the PS3 version, and been sold out of the 360 version and the crazily overpriced 360 Special Edition (or Collectors Edition, or whatever it's called) I might have to buy a PS3 just so I can play some version of the game.

Sad for Sony that there are only 2 selling points for the PS3 for me:

1) I do like the dualshock controller.

and

2) All the local stores are sold out of GTA:IV for the 360 cause it's way more popular!

We Compare The PS3 and 360 Versions]]> I've tried them both at the local GS this afternoon and when forced to give a nod to one or the other i reluctantly give the nod to the (drum roll please.........)XBOX 360 version.Overall Gameplay is slightly more enjoyable on the 360 version that the PS3 version and in the end there's nothing like being able to grab the game and play it on ANY 360 without a lengthy install persiod, BUT they are literally so close in look and feel that's you could easily swear you were playing the same game if it weren't for a different controller in your hand.

All in all both editions are top notch
with a very slight extra nod to the 360 version for being more user friendly and having a clear future with the exclusive content downloads coming later in the year as well as having a more user friendly online enviornment.

For the Xbox 360 edition here are some great reasons why I'll be buying it for this platform:

- You won't waste 7 minutes and 20 seconds of your life installing it.

- Multiplayer XBox Live wins vs. the Playstation network everytime.

- Downloadable content.

- Achievements and Gamerscore

- Smoother frame rates.

Let's face it... this is generally the rule of thumb for every cross-console title that comes out.

My question is about the install time... Does this mean that some of the loading times in-game would be reduced on the PS3 version? Has this been covered anywhere?

Another good reason to get the PS3 version would be that the next GTA is likely to only come out on the PS3 unless the 360 figures out how to store such a big game on a DVD, DL maybe(which would take forever)? Just think what we could have if Rockstar were to use all the space on the BR :) Once Home comes out I think achievements may be implemented. The only thing that bums me out is the ammount of players in regard sto online play. There was an mod for the PC version of San Andreas that allowed over a hundred people to play at once. That was/is FUN! Of course a console could'nt handle hosting a game like that but it woud be nice if there were central servers for GTA IV that could. Nitro would have been nice.

Which online do you prefer or have more friends on? I have more friends on line on Live...simple as that for me.

If you are seriously picking which version to get based on negligible amounts of pop in on one system or the other, color filtering being slightly different, less then moderately different load times, or any of the other nit pick differences that reviewers needed to look for then its just sad. If there were REAL differences between the two then this would be a completely different conversation.

And to the MS fans screaming DLC, you all don't even know what the DLC is yet so you may want to set that aside for now. If you want to argue for easier use of Live or Achievements, fine but bringing up this phantom DLC that people can only speculate on doesn't do you any good.

Ultimately it will come out for pc, and when it does the PC version will of course be superior so if you're really have patience, you should wait it out.

Where does it says the PS3 version is superior?

I've read numerous reviews, and every sinlge one says the games are darn near identical.

The only real differences are achievements and the DLC, so why shouldn't reviewers mention this?

If i had a choice of 2 cars, almost identical in spec and price, but one would have a better resale value in a couple of years, that would be a extra point to consider.

DLC is the same. It doesn't have an immediate effect, but if you keep the game 6 months, then you'd be annoyed if nobody had said you could have got extra content if you'd brought the other version.

- Every preview site OTHER thank Kotaku has reported a better framerate and anti-aliasing on the PS3
- Less overly-saturated colors
- Less pop-in and longer draw distances.
- Most probably exclusive PS3 content of its own, especially considering Kotaku reported that Sony said that the PS3 was getting some DLC, regardless of the 360's exclusive two episodes.
- DualShock3.
- Comfortable with the PS brand and controller.
- Free online gameplay.
- HDMI (I have 360 Launch Syndrom as well).

However, I'll get the 360 version because that's the version my friends have :P

Here in Europe microsoft is throwing a lot of money to introduce the console+GTA4, the price is good but people generally have very bad feelings about 360 for all the problems they know about his fiability.

From all my entourage, a lot just sells their 360 and buy a PS3, to play GTA4 without thinking about when they will have to send the console to microsoft. Then there is Gran Turismo 5 and Metal Gear Solid 4.

In the past I was a 360 user too but she breaks 2 times and, with 6 games (3 of them mostly unplayed) I was forced to sell it too, losing money (games+console+accesories).

Then again I think differently, to me it was Sony's PS Brand that was propelled into the stratosphere by having all the big names make products for their system. I dont think Rockstar Games should be labled as a company who was propelled into massive success by Sony. My initial assessment of the 360 versions anti-aliasing may have been due to playing the release version via component cables, then playing the retail version via HDMI. And that's what I hear from most sources and from friends that actually already tried the game first hand. Kotaku is quite alone in it's opinion, so I'm afraid that I think they got it wrong this time. It happens even to the best.

My own conclusion is that, this time, the PS3 shown an undieniable power edge over the 360 (in a game that pushes the envelope quite a bit), and that the age of the supposed superiority of the 360 at multiplats has hereby ended.

I am still not sure. Right now I'm leaning towards PS3 because for five years I've played grand theft auto on PS2. The controller layout is just "there" for me with the PS3, and seeing 5 gta's on my shelf all for PS2 and than getting it for 360 might be awkward.

My problem is with the DLC, which could potentially cost $30 a pop for all we know, and a couple of other things mentioned including the controller. With around 28 hours to go, I might choose the PS3 version.

360 20GB + GTA4 = 280€
PS3 40GB + GTA4 = 440€

That's quite a difference for a game that is essentially identical on both platforms. Even the 360 Elite bundle is cheaper (380€ with a 120GB HD).

On the one one hand, I'd much rather play through the campaign on the PS3 because the texture-pop-in that ran rampant through Mass Effect nearly killed it for me. Well, that's not true, it was still a great game, but the emotional investment I had in the story was pretty low, and I blame the texture issues. Every time something happened, it started out as a bare figure, then the textures filled in 2 or 3 seconds later. Couldn't shake the knowledge that this was just a videogame.

On the other hand, I really want to play online with my brother, because the online multiplayer actually sounds quite nice. He has a 360, so I may get it for 360 for that.

DLC doesn't effect me at the moment. I want to learn more about it, but right now I don't know enough to care, and by the time I do know enough to care, it'll be months later. Could always make switch from one version to the other if necessary.

Finally, achievements & the controller: I prefer the PS3 in both of these areas, because I like the Dual Shock 3 more, and I detest achievements. They deter me from having fun and wind up frustrating me more often than not. The descriptions of this game's achievements sound like a lot more frustration will ensue for me. I have a problem, I know.

So which version do I get? I cannot decide!

I'm thinking 360, just because the multiplayer does sound quite enticing. If I intend to play it, I'll want to play it with my brother, so 360 version it shall be. I think.

Dislike the PS3 controller at the best of times and I can't be bothered to import a DS3.

The lack of proper consistent online presence on the PS3 is dreadful, I have a handful of friends with ps3s and it's a ballache to get them into Warhawk games. Don't get me started on the MGO beta, ugh.

I have a really close knit group of mates on Xbox Live who I've played with since the Halo2 days on gears, halo3 and CoD4. These are genuine friends who make online gaming what it is for me. Any multi platform game with an online component is a no brainer for me, Xbox Live all the way. I'm really really stoked for the multiplayer in GTA.

Personally, I'm not THAT interested in the DLC but I am intrigued as it could be something special so I'm keeping my eye on it.

Also to those who write off Achievements as a way of adding life to a game clearly aren't paying attention. Admittedly many devs don't use them correctly but with a game like Crackdown, achievements were a massive component as they were so damn well implemented. Achievements should be used to spur a gamer to push the boundaries of the game that little bit more, and on a free roaming game like GTA (and Crackdown) it can make all the difference.

If you're a multi-console owner, you're probably going to buy the version that you know most of your friends will be playing, unless you are anti-social.

If you're a new console buyer, well, I have my predictions on that but that's for the future NPD posts.

2. Frame rate: 360

6. Motion Controlls: PS3 but recommended to turn this feature off. lol
7. Rumble: tie ?unless you didn't buy a DualShock three for your PS3? so then the nod goes to the 360

My final thought: All in all there about the same and it really comes down to controller preferance and the fact that XBL allows for the best online friends list intergration all with voice. Kotaku you didn't mention that the PS3 version doesn't support voice.

"One of the problems with the 360, and it affects games like Grand Theft Auto if you think about how much content we put in the actual machine, is the fact that they don't have a significantly larger storage medium than the previous systems. It's a slightly bigger DVD disc.

"I think that the 360 is going to have to get 'round this issue we're talking about. I can think of various ways they can do it. Hopefully, they're going to adopt one of those in the next year or so, because it's going to become more of an issue. If we're filling up the disc right now, where are we going? It's not like our games are going to get any smaller. I think that issue's on the table with a bunch of games right now. I'm sure they'll come through with an intelligent solution."

Houser's right when he states that the issue is affecting other games. It has been claimed that the size of a DVD was problematic for the devs over at Bizarre making Project Gotham Racing 4, while Epic's VP, Mark Rein, has stated in the past that the 360 version of Unreal Tournament III may not have as much content as the PS3 and PC versions due to storage limitations.

A DVD holds up to 9GB of information, while a dual-layered Blu-ray disc holds up to 50GB.

Of course, going by the length of time between San Andreas and GTA IV, we're probably looking at four years before the next full GTA game hits. It's not unreasonable to think we'll be into the life cycle of a new Xbox by that point.

Houser also mentioned the subtle differences between the graphics of GTA IV on the PS3 and 360, saying (paradoxically), "We're at a point now where the games pretty much look identical side by side. There's a slight difference in the way they look. I think that's to do with really low-level technical stuff that I'm not the guy to explain. The 360 games have a certain look to them; PS3 games have a certain look to them. I like the way [the PS3] renders. There's a certain kind of softness without being blurry -- some warmth to it -- and then there's a certain more clinical element to how the 360 looks."

I honestly wonder if you really understand Anti-aliasing. There is no "glazing effect" caused buy Anti-aliasing. To put it in layman's terms, you are simply smoothing the edges of objects on your screen via Anti-aliasing. There is no other effect that I have known or heard of.

AA is useful at all resolutions, not just low resolutions, though aliasing is naturally less severe at higher resolutions due to the size of the pixels.
