Pretty awesome. Niko is one of the best things of GTA IV: Dark past + New Life = Gray desitions on Liberty City.

I've never been so interested in another GTA after GTA2... they simply weren't the same. But now Rockstar really impressed me: Buying a PS3 is now top priority on my list (and then in June I can enjoy MGS4 too ;D )

@mrghost: The tracks in SAW 2 actually had no names, but each had a specific photograph associated with it.
Hence, the 'name' for the track is actually "B&W Stripes", and 'Z-Twig' was just something the fans came up with.
There is no 'Z-Twig' in the track listing at Amazon or any other retailer.

@peAr_nectAr: I actually haven't seen much in the way of gameplay; I was going mainly off the look of the models in the trailer and screenshots that I've seen. I'm really not entirely sure what I have against Rockstar's style; I think it might be that all their characters' features seem squarish because they've never had much in the way of a cloth engine to make the clothes look realistic.

@peAr_nectAr: You also have to consider Euphoria. It is as utterly astonishing as the hype would lead you to believe. It really is the next step after Havok, that all games have to and hopefully will follow.

But it's not just the Euphoria-driven animation and A.I. reactions, which can't be overstated, but also the numerous small touches. Pedestrians holding newspapers over their head and racing to the sidewalk when it starts to rain, getting out of cars and confronting each other after an accident (sometimes erupting into violence, sometimes apology), cops arresting people for various things right in front of but also completely oblivious to you, people smoking, eating, drinking, doing yoga, talking, jogging, etc.

The level of detail on the NPCs and everything else is completely absurd and I doubt it will come close to being matched in this gen unless Rockstar releases the next GTA title. Other developers have to feel somewhat shamed by this.

The NPCs feel far more alive in GTA4 than in any other game I've played, and it's not even close. The devil really is in the details.

The actual characters, including the NPCs, look just as good if not better than most (or all) games I've seen. Especially considering the magnitude of the world they have created, the size and the detail in the artistry of characters is simply amazing.

@Yossarian: I think the architecture is simply stunning, and the way the different lighting effects mix with each other, along with the weather, combines for some truly beautiful symbiotic and aesthetic effects that I've rarely ever seen in games.

The lighting engine itself falls under the "technical" category, but what they choose to do with it and how they choose to use it is purely artistic. Few things are more beautiful than driving through the Times Square equivalent in GTA4 during night-time, or viewing the city from a helicopter.

I also think the so-called "Bob Ross filter" is quite striking, and often helps make for some rather picturesque still shots of the game.

@Zeliard: Graphically amazing on both of those levels? I can see the argument for technical beauty (if only in the lighting and particle systems), but artistic?

Rockstar still can't make a decent 3D model to save their lives, and I don't know how they can spend years on each title and still end up with low-poly models that look completely rigid and unrealistic. The day a GTA character doesn't look like something that a PS1 could render is the day I play a GTA game again.

The ICO save music is one of my favorite game music tracks of all time. Many people like that game, as do I, and I must say it is one of the few games to ever move me emotionally in a direction other than "fuck yeah I just killed that dood!". I don't say that in a bad way honestly, I've had plenty of strong emotional moments playing fighting games and shooters, it was just refreshing.

The soundtrack had a lot to do with it. If you liked the game and haven't had a listen to it, I highly recommend it. Here's the Wikipedia for the composer:

@Islandkiwi: I agree. I've seen many people attempt to trivialize the DLC by saying something to the effect of "well, I never really cared about the story in the past GTAs and I never finished the games, so more content doesn't appeal to me."

I have a feeling it's going to be quite different when it comes to GTAIV. I think people will want to see where Niko's story goes and what he's really all about. Rockstar's made many clear efforts to head in a deeper, more dramatic and realistic direction with the series, starting with this entry. If the DLC builds on that in any way, that's enough for me.

@PapaBear434: The lighting engine in GTA4 is absurdly powerful, and it is indeed completely dynamic and in real-time, and seems to affect every object individually. I believe the lighting and the Euphoria animation is what will most impress people on a technical level. The draw distance and particle effects are also spectacular, from what I've seen.

And of course, the detail is on a level that we've never come close to seeing, and on a very large scale. The game is, quite simply, graphically amazing on both a technical and artistic level. Graphics should be the last problem anyone has with the game, which is odd for a GTA game, but that's a part of what makes this one so special.

Honestly about 3 weeks ago, I could really care less about GTAIV. I've played all of them (except SA, which I own, but have never started it), but for some reason this one just didn't get me excited.

Enter the Kotaku Hype machine.

Coming here everyday and seeing a new GTAIV post and reading everyone's comments, and seeing just how pumped everyone (for the most part) is about this game, has just got me in the mood for some Grand Theft Auto! I think Rockstar owes Kotaku some $$$. If it wasn't for this website, I probably wouldn't even think about picking this game up. Now, I can't think of another game I'd rather play!

Aphex Twin background track for the win! After reading the IGN review for this game I'm pretty pumped, even though I've never finished a GTA game before. I like how this new one has characters concerned with more than just getting power, but who actually have souls and anguish over their choices. Great trailer.
