Dumbest thing is that Sega *has* a great tennis game in Virtua Tennis. I have no idea why they didn't just take the tennis engine out of that and slap some new graphics and new characters in it and call it done. No, they go and create an entirely new game with sucky ass gameplay. I mean, the characters sort of float across the court, and half the time pressing the stroke button just does nothing. And with the garish graphics, I can't even see the ball more often than not.

No thanks, I'll pass even at $19.99. I would have bought a Sega-themed tennis game if it was actually good.

The mini-games (which I consider the actual game) are way too much fun.

Plus, I like all of the Sega characters as opposed to Nintendo where I only like a small handful. They all have a unique charm.

The demo (for 360) does it absolutely no justice. It's almost as if the controls between the two are different. I played the demo and hated it. Had a free rental at Hollywood Video and it was the only new release they had, brought it home and fell in love.

The controls do take time to get used to and there are definitely times where you can swear you pressed the button but Amigo just stood there with that stupid grin on his face. The AI is often questionable, too. Alex Kidd is absolutely horrible and somehow manages to hit the ball even if he is in another time zone.

On a nitpick level, there's some questionable design decisions. Any and all references to House of the Dead have been unceremoniously titled Curien Mansion, the Outrun stage is missing the actual star of the game (the car), the Jet Set Radio crew lack their unique cel shading, and it doesn't go deep enough into Sega's library. Virtua Fighter, Phantasy Star, hell, even Congo Bongo would have been interesting.

Having said all that, it is fun and definitely radiates a sort of Dreamcast-era vibe. The puyo-pop minigames are fun, most of the music has been nicely ripped from previous Sega games, and, as stated, once you get over the sludge-like handicap, you can use it to your advantage to run faster and pull off short hits and lobs.

Without the Sega nostalgia, the game really wouldn't be much. With it, though, and it's not a bad start. Ignoring why the game was made in the first place, most of the game was done right. You genuinely get the feeling that someone on the development team was a big Sega fan and really put his or her heart into the project despite having to make some odd concessions. The game probably should have been released at $20. If you need something to keep you occupied for a while, you could do a whole lot worse with $20.

One thing that bothered me about it though is on some courts the frame rate drops. Throws you off when it's 60 fps the rest of the time. The Eggman court is especially annoying cause on one side the fps drops cause of the Eggman hologram while your opponent gets 60 fps playing the other side.

I expected a mediocre tennis game with sweet Sega skins, but I found the input extreeeeeemely laggy and unresponsive compared to any other tennis game I tried.

But what really got my interest piqued was the "hype deflection shield" comment - that's a great idea! How about a "hyper hype" or "uber hype" etc... tag for games like Halo, SSBB, GTA IV, etc that get a half dozen stories a day? That would let people skip the way overhyped games, and optionally dig back through the archive and look at all the most anticipated titles at will!
