A friend of mine mentioned the discussion going on here, so I thought I would drop by--glad you (generally) enjoyed the report. Since people asked: I don't live with my parents (good thing, too many games in their basement ;) ), I am married (with a child), I don't have either a whole lot of money or time to play games (but what I do have goes right to that, natch :) ), and I do indeed hope that my students think that I am a cool professor (I could be labeled worse things). And you get to be a fantasy fiction professor by spending a whole lot of time in grad school and then writing fantasy fiction yourself...my first novel is due out next year.

Also--I'm glad people picked up on the SLIGHT bit of self-parody which might have been going on in that clip. Just a bit. :) In all seriousness, I may be a little overenthusiastic about games, but I grew up with them and my friends and I still have a lot of fun playing them...it's a good hobby. And last but not least: Talisman is awesome. Those who claim otherwise just don't understand why getting the Gnome follower is akin to reaching a state of personal bliss.

Damn I love me some boardgames. It's been a while since my friends got together and played.
Settlers (and both expansions); Starfarers; Puerto Rico; Twilight Imperium; House on Haunted Hill; Starcraft; World of Warcraft; Arkham Horror (and 3 expansions); Carcasonne; Epic Duels; so many great games, and tons I'm forgetting.

... don't get me wrong, I love my video games too! XD

Man, this guy is lively and you can tell he really loves his hobby. His game collection must be like children to him. At least you know his class wouldn't be boring. It seems like he would be really passionate about his job as well, and I'm pretty sure he could make you laugh and smile and generally have a good time while you study fantasy fiction.

I feel your pain my friend. Ever since I moved to NYC from PR (now you see why we shot lizards with bb guns!) I haven't played any board games.
Here in NYC I dont have any friends who like that. In PR we had a group of a dozen or so friends who, on and off, got together to play at least once a week. Like I said above, it was a blast.
Its better when you play with friends, cause it makes it more casual. I dont like to be fighting over an obscure rule, or having to reference the rules book about a particular action in the game (that is fairly common in board game clubs). To me this was the same as hanging out at a local pub, or a get together BBQ with friends.

ah, TALISMAN!

I remember spending lots of SUNNY summer afternoons hanging out in my friends garage playing this game. That game used to take HOURS just to finish ONE session! Lots of beer, cursing, whining, and shooting lizards with bb guns (dont ask).

@Cameroo: I too wished GW would have kept making board games ( well I worked for the small part of GW that made the Street Fighter / Soulcalibur / Darkstalkers / SNK CCG ), then I still might have a job. The company I worked for got bought up by Fantasy Flight Games in the great GW purge of 2008. Seems GW wants to reorganize their situation since they are losing money hand over fist. Thats what you get when you shell out big cash for a license and have a game tank all the way to the shire...So all GW board games except for Space Hulk and Blood Bowl, FFG is going to be getting it.

I don't do the doll painting or the dice rolling of mini games but go over to Privateer Press and check their shit out. Ex-coworkers who made it off the sinking Sabertooh ship found their way over there.

Oh and good luck finding the two extra special cards for Talisman that came out with the new set...

My older brother and I used to be big into GW for a long time, he even used to work at their HQ in Nottingham. I remeber seeing that he'd bought a copy of Twilight Imperium and having a look through it.... holy shit, that's complex. Quite a far cry from Blood Bowl and Space Hulk...

I still enjoy playing board games with my friends, it's a good change from video gaming. I think a few of the comenters on this (hardcore gaming) blog need to have a look at themselves when they start insulting the guy in this vid for being so passionate about his (mostly social) hobby.

@Kyle81: Right but thats a scene in itself. Then maybe you an your buddies go to a tournament or something and everyone else from your region is there playing. But no-one I know wants to play board games. No-one. Except my little brother and then its just monopoly or cluedo. About 5 years ago I got this awesome looking lord of the rings game, absolutely plastered in great artwork and cool pieces. Know how many times I've played it? None. Because there's no-one to play with.

I would buy the starcraft game, the doom game, I'd try some of these other ones you guys mention. @Veltis: The cost to produce board games like Warhammer Quest really skyrocketed. Back then board games couldn't be sold for the large bucks these specialty games are sold for, and these games also had to be sold at big retail chains. The board gaming market suffered, board games got cheaper, smaller, etc. Hobby shops though in past years at least have brought back the board game, and the big complex board games have made a big comback now.... course they are expensive at $80 a box in many cases.

@Cameroo: I think the reason they stopped making Warhammer quest was because you just had to buy a charachter in a warrior pack and not a freakin huge expensive army, and it was not enough for Games workshop pockets.
They dont make enough money as it is with new editions and codex every 2 years.

@Kyle81: You are right, but from time to time we play with just 500 pts before going somewhere while the wifes finds out what they wanna do. And its not everyday we play an apocalypse (2000 pts+). And its true Warmachine is more expensive than it was, like gas and food will be very very soon ; ;.

@Cameroo: FFG does put out some duds though, but usually they are the ones they published, not developed internally.

The recent released "Dust" is pure and utter crap. Really boring and broken. It's Axis and Allies without anything that made Axis and Allies good. It plays like a game of risk with more randomness.

Just picked up Descent: Journeys into the Dark this last weekend. Deffinatly worth checking out! Arkham Horror is another people really ought to look at if you a fan of Lovecraftian horror like me. Those folks at Fantasy Flight games really put together some top drawer board games.

I wish Game Workshop would get back into the boardgame scene. I don't know why they ever stopped makeing that gem of a game that was Warhammer Quest.

Oh and Talisman was probably the game that got me hooked on fantasy gameing way back in the day. The 4th edition is pretty damn great. But not as good as the 2nd.

I agreed with him up to Talisman. It is the worst game I have ever played.

Starcraft is a good game though, as it Twilight Imperium. Both are quite long though (Twilight Imperium usually is 6 hours+)

@Veltis: No one plays small warmachine battlegroup games anymore. The whole WM/Horders thing has gone into larger battles now, and the cost has gone up greatly for that game. It used to be a selling point to play Wm that you just bought a battle box and went at it, but seriously, that hasn't been the case for years now.

Twilight Imperium is crazy delicious. Does take the better part of an afternoon to play so my friends and I can only break it out every so often but on those happy days we research technology, plan invasions, and bribe each other for votes on an upcoming political agenda. I recall the game was an influence on Brad Wardell in the design of Galactic Civilizations as well.

I wish there was a bigger board gaming scene in the UK. Most I've managed to find is one guy who used to play Risk and Games Workshop. Warhammer is fine but sometimes you don't wanna have to spend 15 hours painting one mode, you wanna slap your pieces down and get playing there and then.
