When you pay monthly I always feel like I am on the clock and every second I play I am wasting fractions of a cent to microsoft as crazy as that may sound. i wouldn't mind so much if it was a hundred and some bucks for life and then I don;t have to worry about it. PSN just offers financial peace of mind for me even if it is somewhat subpar for the time being. PSN isnt really that stable for overseas users. Ridge Racer 7 and Resistance are flawed at best when playing gamers outside of japan for instance. Ive never gotten a good game of resistance since the international server patch.

That being said, who do we trust more here, Gamespy or XBL. Im not sure if either is really that trust worthy when it comes to quality. Id take xbl though over a third party I think.

I really don't think gta4 will be a network problem for any system, it's primarily a single player game and i'd be surprised if half the players actually got online consistently.

PSN in terms of functionality is great imo.

warhawk: 32 players online worldwide with voicechat in-game. This is a NETWORK ONLY game so everyone that has this in thier ps3 is playing online. I've personally yet to experience any issues.

Resistance: 40 players online worldwide with voicechat in-game. It may not be played as much now but when this game came out it seemed like everyone was playing it and then when it was released overseas people were playing it like crazy. Never had a problem.

resistance 2 will have 60 players online and the next socom will be insane as well

I have a 360 and a ps3 and till' this day I still ask myself why the hell isn't live free or at the least the core functionality of it? PSN does what matters most to gamers for free, the real gamer could care less about the shitload of extra services and features that live has and as far as I know is rarely used by most(disney movies, abc shows that you can get online officially for free?).

Look at Blizzard for an example of a right way to handle "unexpected high demand". Yeah, WoW has never been flawless either, but during launch they had a little over 40 "servers". Mind you a game server is probably at least 15 boxes plus database and so on, so thats a decent amount of hardware. And that was all maxed out during launch, so they doubled the hardware and had over 80 realms up a week later. Some realms still had some issues, but most people could play the game they bought. And even now they continue to balance load across the 140ish servers they run for the US alone in a way that minimizes downtime during primetimes. MMO servers are much more tasked then Live is, since most of Live is just matchmaking, IM like online presence, and stats.

2 months to increase capacity like that seems like a long time, just as a month+ of issues.

live was never fully down you could still play people were just having issues signing up for live and recovering accounts. which is a pretty big deal during the holiday when everyone is trying to get on live for the first time, but people that were already on the service had only minor problems.

And the games I would start would crash usually after 20 minutes of play. I dont know if that had to do with the number of people that were online or not but it sure did suck. basically we saw all sorts of "This match is no longer available", and "Someone unexpectedly disconnected". The loading time is really really long too.

Sorry, I got alittle side tracked, back to the network issues.
So when the xbox live tanks because of GTA4 I'll just boot COD4 and do a little Team Deathmatch. Oh wait; the entire server is hosed, I can't play anything online. Great! Now I am paying for service that I cannot even use. That's ok, it's only the server, what else can go worng?

Well, in January just after XBOX live was back up and running I powered my system up and received three red lights as oppose to the green lights I was accustom to seeing. I had my unit for only 13 months and my warranty was for 12. Ok, so now I have to ship my unit to them, pay $100, wait 5 weeks for it to return and continue paying for xbox live.

After receiving my system back I called Xbox support to see if they would give my a $12 credit and they said no, "We do not give out credits". I even ask to speak to the "supervisor", and I wasn't allowed to. So anyway to end this, I have a 360 for sell message me if you are interested.

360 Elite = $449.00
Xbox Live = $56.00
Replacing a bricked unit = $100 + 5 weeks down time
200 gb HDD = N/A

PS3 = priceless

I do take issue with people constantly digging on PSN functionality. Spend any time with it and you will realize that it's very stable. All the online play I've done has been very problem free (almost a year) and the problems that do come up are usually due to my own router or ISP issues. The games on PSN don't have the consistant set of functions like Live- all games with multiplayer, leaderboards, and voice chat, etc. I do think that's a real weakness too, and I hope that Sony will tighten up the requirements. A little research is an easy way around this people. Being free also says something. For Live, to play online, you pay about $4.23 a month. After paying that you still have the same sorts of problems you get with the free PSN, along with many games being p2p hosted. I really don't get having to pay for p2p hosting for any game. If you're paying a fee then all the games should be server based, otherwise what are you paying for? A menu?

Live is (I'm sure) a great service. So is the PSN.

Alot of games on the PSN use their own servers as opposed to unified servers like Live. It may be free but for just 4 dollars a month it sure does beat the socks of the PSN.

Since I don't understand anywhere near what I'd like to about networking, I'm kinda assuming that GTA could take out every online game on XBL. It's nice to hear about them anticipating it, but this is going to be the XBL equivalent of Black Friday, and even though most people will care most about the single player, I assume a ton will at least want to see the MP. And I just don't have any faith when it comes to 360 reliability.

The first time I tired to get on PSN it was out for a day. And not for some maintenance. The psn has been out for a year, live has been around for over 5. If after 5 years, the PSN has had only one glitch, thwn you can talk.

Each game is hosted by the developers so each studio will have different luck and is on their own... PSN is not a centralized network where everyone is together on PSN... no ... GTA will be on GTA servers hosed by rockstar... or as they mentioned above probably gamespy...

and gamespy most definitly isnt bulletproof either... ill stick with XBL and my 3 expansion backs for GTA... and playing with my friends on XBL end of story....

Hey! While I'm playing this, let me pause briefly and see what everyone else is playing, have a chat with a friend who's playing a totally different game, background download some trailers and send a couple text messages.

Guess which one is which. Yes. Playing games when I am a party of one on PSN is fine. Managing a network of friends and having large-scale gamenights that AREN'T all in one game all night, etc. is just a pain in the butt or impossible.

So for certain users, PSN is fine, but for the people that really USE Xbox Live, it's so far superior and worth every dime. An XMB will help greatly, but PSN still has a long way to go to catch up to what Live had at the 360's launch.
