@Xenigma: According to an article I read, the team handling FFIV specifically targeted the complaints from FFIII to improve the UI and load times.
If you ask me, that's the exact reason why FFVI hasn't been done yet, all part of a step by step process:

1. Remake FFIII, a great test bed of both technology and consumer interest. Garanteed to sell a decent amount of copies in Japan because it's FF (and the best on NES), and in the US because the game had never been released at all. Ultimately it's not a game many people care that much about out of the history so if things go horribly wrong, it doesn't tarnish the name.

2. Remake FFIV: Take the lessons learned from III and improve on everything. Now we have a title that has a following, but still not the hardcore crowd that FFVII, VI, or even XI has. How will people react to the improvements made in the rehash engine?

3. This step depends on the results of step 2. Did the fans take to FFIV better than FFIII? Worse? Do people like the gameplay better? How about the new content? Let's take all this feedback and push it to FFV...or if the feedback was THAT positive, FFVI.

Having never played FFIV, this is an exciting release for me, but at the same time the visuals are giving me flashbacks to FFIII on the DS, a game that I'd really like to forget due to how bad the game beneath the pretty graphics was. @Kaemon: Been there, done that. I finally kicked myself in the ass and started going through all of them again with intention of beating them all. In order.

I've now beaten 1-7, with FF2 (NES) done twice, once on NES the other on PSX.

I did break the "In Order" streak though because I've beaten the main story to FFXI (haven't completed the expansions yet), and when FFXII came out, I picked it up and couldn't put it down till the end cut scene rolled.

This one is completely different from the ground up - the story and basic gameplay are the same, but this is truly the "ultimate" version of FFIV that has been released.

@Kaemon: I used the DS as an alarm clock when I was studying abroad, because the thing is lod, annoying, and won't shut the heck up.
@tk.: It's pure difficulty and uses an imbalanced "invisible stat" based class system, with a weak narrative holding it together. Very old skool RPG, if you're into that kind of thing.

FF4 is possibly my favorite Final Fantasy (5 and 6 are up there too). I really want to lpay this. My only gripe is the model for Dark Knight Cecil. He looks so stupid. Like some bobble-head. I reallize they're trying to put a 3d spin on the old super-difformed characters and msot others look ok but Cecul just looks dumb.

I wonder if they'll remake FF5 and 6 like this. I dread to see what they'll make Kefka look like.

@Shiryu: Well, I have high hopes for this one because it's pretty much brand new, it's going to be harder, there's going to be added story and (good or bad) your favorite characters will have voices that you can associate with them!

I, personally, can't wait. This is one of the most memorable FFs for me. I can remember renting the game and not getting very far (just about to Fabul, or maybe up to Mt. Ordeals) before having to return it. And then later I would go on to play and beat it on two different ports (PSX and GBA). The GBA was my favorite of the two, having the ability to switch characters at the end. It's disappointing that they got rid of that aspect... Either way, I can't wait to see what they DO do with this version, and I can't wait to play through it again.

And in line with everyone else, I've played at least one version of pretty much all FF games. X-2 is the exception, but from what I've heard, it's not that important. I've beaten I (PSX), IV (PSX &GBA), VI (SNES), VII and Tactics. And from what I've played, I think I liked the original FFIII (NES) a lot better than the DS remake. Some things that they changed made it very awkward. I didn't like having to zoom in to find hidden items and I also didn't like that they removed the ability to target a whole group of one specific monster (as opposed to strictly one or all of them). Anyway, that's enough ranting.
