Fantastic review. And i love SSB. I think his most resounding point is the paragraph about being "that guy". It's true for a ton of nintendo party games, where we all assume everyone gets the fun of it, but then you try to teach someone how to do a mario kart power slide and you realize just how indoctrinated you've become to the idiosyncracies of nintendo game design.

Two thumbs up. He's right all over. I just love the game anyway.

Sunjammer

I can't hear the review, so I'm not going to watch it yet, but Honestly I have to say the novelty wore off quickly off of Brawl. Mainly because Subspace was boring and I hated playing it even with friends!

Multiplayer is still fun, but I feel that there is a certain competitive spirit that is gone that I used to have when I played Smash 64.

I noticed this when I saw myself losing interest from the game after maybe 25 min compared to the couple hours lasted in Melee and and the infinite hours in Smash 64.

Honestly, why didn't they have a separate ranked system along with the random easy to access system they have now? You appease the competitive players and the new players who don't want to be intimidated! WIN WIN SITUATION!

Contrary to all this I still like the game and see myself playing it in the foreseeable future.

Dr.Chocobo

@Shaoko: The problem with that logic is that, if people inevitably only dislike games they suck at, there would truly be no bad games. It would also make you a hypocrite for disliking even a single game. Do you like every game you play?

Yes, everyone is entitled to an opinion. But is that opinion well-formed? Whether or not Smash Bros. was well-received is irrelevant; it has real problems. As do many popular titles.

Handsome Fat Man

I hate when people take a game that's received well then try to bash it all these different ways and say it's a bad/average game just because they don't like it, or the real reason: They suck at it.

On that note: Halo sucks, Megaman sucks, any game with a sequel SUCKS. (By the way that's sarcasm.) The thing that makes me laugh my ass off is when people are always bashing Nintendo for all their sequels, when you see these same people dieing over GTA 4 which will arguably be the same as the last 3 games in the franchise just with different graphics. Heh, opinions are opinions, but honestly you guys just don't know when to state one and just keep feeding off the programmed "I hate this company because I love this one" bias.

Shaoko

I have to disagree with that last part. No, really, I do see more bashing. You might say PS3 was the most bashed console, but that went out of style like a year ago. For some reason, whenever I visit a 360/PS3 post and a Wii post, there's more rouges that like to insult the system and their fanbase on the Wii one then on a 360/PS3 one. See for yourself, instead of just saying the Wii is full of mini-game collections.

Jac21

I think everybody need to remmber that this is yahtzee talking here. Its his job to highlight flaws in a funny and original way. His job is not to give an in depth review. To get upset about him being too hard on a game or being baist would be like getting upset at him for being british.
He also has a very particular taste in games.

1 He manly likes single player games, particularly ones with a story thats meshed well with gameplay. SSBB being a game for multiplay doomed it to a ton of point loss to begin with.

2 He doesn't like fighting games. Which SSBB being a fighting game dooms it to even more of a points loss.

3 He also doesn't like nintendo and how they keep using old IPs. SSBB being the reserection of nearly every nintendo IP dooms it to lose what every point it had left.

4 Its yahtee hes the Simon of game reviews.

I like yahtee his reviews bring smile every time, But a then comes a all the fanboys defending the game or cheering yahtee on for bashing it for them. Same thing happened when he reviewed halo 3 the fanboys where in a uproar about it for a while.

So everybody please calm down yahtee is here for our entertainment so enjoy and stop fighting.

nightshade71986

LOL this is a very accurate, honest and hilarious review. It's equally funny to see people defend the game and most can't explain why they like it. I played it a few weeks ago and found it to be a interesting title that did a great job incorporating this cast, but I didn't find it to be that compelling game that would hold my interest for hours on end. Sure there may be some depth behind the combat if you chose to look beyond the wackiness but face it SSBB is a game meant to be played by a twelve and under crowd. I a not saying that you have to be a kid to enjoy it but if you think that this "beats all fighting games in existence" than you probably think that: the storylines in the WWE are real, paint chips taste great and can't leave your home without your little white helmet and leash.

CoinSlot

@mrplow8: That's a problem... but not the only problem.

Unlockables. To get the game you paid for you have to wade through a mountain of unlockables. Yes, you may enjoy the fact that you have to "work" to "earn" the priviledge of playing as Toon Link. I want to play him right out of the box.

Via trophies and other memorabilia, the game has enough to unlock without needing to unlock characters. Maybe if the likes of Wolf and Toon Link didn't require several hundred VS. matches, with the alternative being *shudder* the Subspace Emissary, but they do. (And stage builder unlockables? Come on!)

PLUS, on top of that, YOU CAN'T COPY YOUR SAVE FILE. So no DLing a save with everything. Sakurai insists you do it HIS way or the highway.

SSE is garbage. Pure, unadultered garbage. It is repetitive, boring, and full of questionable level design (guess where to fall? guess wrong? lose a life). If you didn't need to play it for unlockables, I could have safely skipped over it.

That there are certain trophies you can't unlock with the golden hammers is bogus. Playing boss battles on the highest difficulty is not fun.

TRIPPING. Another fatherly "Sakurai knows best" design element. Can't turn it off. Yes, I am way of it every time I consider dashing. No, I don't like it, and like the other options in matches, I want the ability to turn it off.

No voice chat in online matches.

No DLC.

SSBB has lots of issues. It's a good game, no doubt. But great? Not a chance.

Handsome Fat Man

Well, I haven't played Brawl, but his review totally echoes my experience with Melee. I spent most of the time confused, unable to follow what was happening (still can't seem to keep track of the action, even when I just watch). I couldn't pull off any of the special moves, yadda yadda yadda.

Of course, I'm a misanthrope who doesn't really like to play video games with other people, and I didn't own any consoles between the Atari 2600 and the Dreamcast, so I'm probably not the audience for this game.

Yahtzee usually seems pretty dead-on to me. He tends to pick out all the things I dislike about the games I've played. Plus, you know, I find the excessive bile and hyperbole entertaining.

Fishmonger

@Rhys:

You win so very much.

Now I never took Yahtzee's reviews seriously, as they're hardly reviews. One really can't make a decision on a purchase on any of his videos and most of the time you have to have played the game to understand what he is talking about.

They are sketches if you ask me, at best.

So I hope no one assumes I'm upset or disagree with his current review just because I'm a "fanboy" or liked the game and he didn't.

Usually he makes valid points and even now he had SOME points I agree with, unfortunately they were very few and practically non-existent.

1. You can't win by button mashing in Brawl... seriously you can't.

Maybe against people who REALLY suck or (as so many commenters here have described) your drunk friends but that doesn't prove or show much.

I would take on ANYONE and see them try to win by button-mashing against me, you won't. Why?

Because of a simple Shield + Grab or jumping over your opponent. Not to mention projectiles. Unlike 2D fighters you can't button-mash in this game.

2. Calling anyone who liked Brawl a fanboy, this is not true. In fact I don't even think you have to be a hardcore Nintendo fan to recognize at least most of these characters. Gamers in general should recognize most of the characters.

Yes there are "obscure" characters but Marth is hardly one of them. For pete's sake he was in MELEE and if you purchased Brawl chances are you have also played Melee. He isn't that unfamiliar (unlike Lucas).

So it surprises me that there are people here who agree with him about Marth, makes me wonder who they are to have purchased a Wii, bought Brawl, and yet apparently never played Melee. I can only assume this is because they were too young to play Melee.

Besides, Sakurai already explained before why he included Marth and Roy in the previous games. In hopes it would encourage Nintendo to sell Fire Emblem in the states. Guess what?

They did, hello Fire Emblem 7, FE8, and the Path of Radiance series.

That is why Lucas is in Brawl, in hopes that Nintendo will release Mother 3 outside Japan. So Yahtzee's complaint is moot as Sakurai intends for Lucas to generate attention for Earthbound.

I agree with him that it is stupid that you can't unlock Snake and Sonic from the get-go, yet Nintendo announced them. But at the same time it isn't like it's hard to unlock them . Snake and Sonic are VERY easy to unlock and were amongst the first characters I unlocked, if your friends complain about an incomplete roster just play for an hour or so w/ them and lo and behold!

You unlocked most of the characters! Yahtzee seems to be unaware of the fact you can unlock characters through multi-player, something I find odd seeing how he supposedly had played with a bunch of friends.

Mikazukinoyaiba

I'm going to try and reply to a large amount of the comments here and explain some things they don't seem to understand.

Do you understand what it is games do? The wording may be different from different people, but in general, games should evoke a response in the gamer. That is, the game causes the gamer to experience emotions that are satisfying in some way. These can be things like joy, tension, excitement or even frustration and sorrow.

All together, when these emotions are brought about in a satisfying manner, the result is known as fun. Therefore, it can be said that games in general, aim to give the gamer fun.

When we look at Super Smash Brothers Brawl, we need to understand that it was designed so that its audience could have fun. The decision to use characters from various other franchises was to make the game fun for a certain audience. This is why a game like Brawl would not do as well with unknown characters. It is not because the gameplay is necessarily bad, it's just that the gameplay plus the characters adds up to more fun for the audience; a simple and obvious decision.

As for unlockable characters; there are a variety of strategies that contribute to providing fun in a game. Basically they are immersion, fantasy fulfilment, human interaction, excitement, reward, challenge and addiction. (If you're interested in finding out more about these, read this.)

Essentially these factors reveal that, surprise surprise, different people play different games for different reasons. From what I know of Brawl (as I haven't played it yet although I do own Melee), there are lots and lots of little things that have been put into the game to attempt to cover these different factors. Unlockable characters is one of them; falling under collectibles in reward.

Hopefully knowing those different aspects of game play motivation will enable you to understand the reasons people play and enjoy certain games, but there are still more things to cover. Firstly, hype.

Hype, contrary to popular belief, is a marketing technique, not a design technique. The aim of hype is to generate more sales, and therefore more money. Brawl has received a lot of hype, and some people don't seem to understand why. Money. People generally like to get paid for their work, and if they can, they like to get paid a lot.

Brawl was hyped with weekdayly information revelations. Websites that cover video games, (Kotaku just for example :p) also cover these revelations; every week, for the past however many months, without fail. Do you see what I'm getting at? Brawl has been a part of our lives whether or not we intended to get the game. This is hype.

Brawl has also inadvertently received hype from "fanboyism." As you know, the game is linked to many other popular franchises, and is an established and popular franchise itself. So long as you have or have had contact with either the fans or the series, you have been linked to brawl. This is hype. It's not a part of the game.

Now button mashing and being "that guy." I have trouble with these concepts. Like I said, I haven't played brawl yet, but in Melee button mashing was next to impossible. Button mashing is possible in most 2D fighters because you usually only have a limited space in which to fight, and it isn't blocked with obstacles. You can't run away or evade easily if someone is just hitting buttons near you. In Melee, many of the levels are quite large and have platforms and items and all sorts of different factors getting in the way of mashers.

The move set of most 2D fighters involves a set of standard moves and a set of special moves. The same is the case with Melee. However, in most other fighters, the standard set is activated by pressing any of the buttons just once. You use a special move by pressing a combination of the standard buttons and using the directional input.

In Melee, standard moves are locked to the A button, and special moves are locked to the B button. If you mash, you either do a quick standard move or a long special move. You don't want to do special moves randomly. Let's say you're mashing with Kirby. You hit A a few times and you do some weak standard moves that aren't likely to hit anyone because they have such short range and mashing means you aren't usually moving in a specific direction.

Then you hit B in your mashing frenzy. Kirby uses his sucking power, a special move that takes time and needs an enemy to be close by. If your enemy isn't an idiot and has moved out of the way or blocked and rolled away from your weak standard moves, he now has the perfect opportunity to annihilate you. The moves are so simple, it's easy to avoid an enemy who's using randomness, and then attack him when he's out of range or doing something stupid.

This leads to the "that guy" thing. I was that guy since Smash 64 (despite my friend owning the game and not me). I kept beating my friends with Kirby so they kinda got annoyed and wouldn't play Melee with me at first. I started using different characters to go easy on them. My motivations revolve around challenge and immersion, so I like to test myself and see how well I can evade the enemy using as few attacks as possible. I still won.

I couldn't understand it. The game mechanics were so simple, I couldn't understand how other people couldn't improve themselves. Block attacks with R. Roll away when blocking. Throw when they block. Attack when they're off guard. Rinse, repeat. For whatever reason, my friends never got the hang of it until one of them bought Melee and they started playing while I wasn't there. Finally they were able to challenge my victories.

So, as a result I've just assumed it's something to do with player morale and not the gameplay. If one player is more motivated to achieve victory, they are more likely to get it the first time. If they continue to win by constantly challenging themselves, the other players will become demoralised from their losses, and subsequently will not improve. It becomes a vicious circle.

Anyway, to sum it all up for the many of you who skipped this; games are for fun. Some fames give fun to a particular audience. Brawl is one of them. More often than not, a game that you don't understand just doesn't have the motivational factors that you usually play a game for. Hype is not intrinsically a part of game design; it is a part of marketing. Control types determine how a game can be played and Melee was not a game that could be played by button mashers. Being "that guy" is a matter of "that guy's" nature, not the gameplay.

Sorry that this was so long. I just woke up and was in a "writing mood."

(As a side note: I've been to Game Traders Robina. Hooray! ^^ )

Rhys

I'm boycotting SSBB regardless, simply because I'm tired of supporting games that are released here decades after the US and Japan for no valid reason; but I still agree with him on many point especially the whole unlockable characters and levels bullshit.

They need to have an option screen right at the very start with two buttons:

[I am a fanboy, I give a shit, make me work for it]
[I just want to play the fucking game]

because although I purchased SSBM (at a reduced price from a friend) I didn't actually unlock anything. I got my mate around who was into that sort of mind nunbing time waster and got him to do it in exchange for beer. And then when he had I sat down to play the game, in myltuplayer with my mates, because that is the only actual interest I had in this game.

The same could be said for Mario Kart games, but I do tend to play those solo for a bit, as I'm truley shocking at racing games and need the practice before being humiliated by my seven year old cousin who has never failed to beat me.

Hedgeworth

He didn't even talk about the gameplay or anything. I could have made a trollish review like this just based on general knowledge before the game even game out. I have tons of issues against the game myself, but none of the crap that he brought up in this "review." Yahtzee freaking sucks.

Green-clad Gamer Dude

I have to imagine this was anticipated pretty highly by the PS3 and 360 fanboys who, if this thread is any indicator, have used it as a free pass to rip on Smash Bros Brawl. Most overrated game of all time? Please.

Some in this thread seem overjoyed to say, "Haha, Smash Bros. got owned and so did everybody who likes it!! HAHAHA in your face, Smash Bros. fans!" Apparently it's not enough to simply dislike the game, you want to rub it in the faces of people who do enjoy the game and somehow look down on them or something?

As far as I'm concerned, this thread is one of the lower points of Kotaku.

Huckleberry

the guy's always hilarious, so even when i disagree with him i still like him.

however, i do think his review is biased by the fact that he doesn't like the fighting genre (and i find muchthe stuff he gushes...tedious at best), and the fact that he throws in Smash Bros. with Dead or Alive is absurd, because all they have in common is that multiple characters are competing with each other. the mechanics are 180 degrees apart from each other. and if you don't like a game (or are drunk when you're playing it), then of course you'll think button mashing works, because you're not going to be good at it either way. and if you don't care enough about a game to try to get better at it, than you shouldn't review it. i'm not saying Smash Bros. is perfect (and he made good points about the unlockables), but his comments made him sound more ignorant about video games than i'm sure he is, and that's a shame.

plus i don't think you have to be a fanboy to appreciate all the fun characters; i thought the Wii name was stupid when I first heard it, but it wore off on me because i understood the company's vision and it's MO in the business. I think the Yahtzee guy (as well as many reviewers) don't get that, and just throw the company in the kiddy box that the larger media does.

however, his "that guy" comments are hilariously appropriate, but in my opinion the C-stick equalizes that out in this game.

Mikintosh

@Ping5000:
Every time anyone can't play a any fighting game they call it a "button masher." That's pretty much the default thing to say about a fighting game if you don't know how to play it.

The truth is any fighting game is a button masher if neither you or your opponent know wtf you're doing.

I don't care what anyone says, fighting games are the most skill based competitive games around. No other type of game requires the same level of wit and reflexes that it takes to be great at a fighting game. It's all about being able to instantly pull of a move when you're opponent is least expecting it, while trying to predict what your opponent is going to do next.

And like I've always said, single player games are for anyone who likes video games, but multi player games are only for people who are good at video games. Anyone who only plays single player games sucks at video games. Don't let them tell you any different.

mrplow8

Funny review as always.. but I felt exactly the same way about Mother 3. However you have to remember that Nintendo did do a fair deal of marketing hype for Earthbound and it was pretty much a failure here from what I hear.

I didn't even know the game existed until a friend told me about it several years after it came out.. so, honestly, you can't say it would outsell anything Nintendo has out right now. Certainly I'd buy the shit out of it and play it to death but it is a rather obscure title.

I am a Nintendo fanboy and even I'm getting sick of Mario Kart being released over and over again, for fucks sake.. it's the same game as it was on the SNES as far as I'm concerned.

glemmstengal

SSBB is really just an inside joke that you NEED to get to truly enjoy the game to its fullest. I've grown up with the Metal Gear series and Nintendo characters and I love them, but I assure you that I'm not blind to SSBB's flaws. Its a fun game(more fun if you have friends over) but if you're looking for a serious fighting game, might as well look somewhere else.

Unlocking some characters was an unnecessary hassle(I honestly cannot picture an 8 year old doing it), and the Space Emissary is way too long, tedious and repetitive.

Pancho_Villasan

I've played a lot of Brawl in the past weeks, and apparently I came to the same conclusion. No matter how much I play, I can't seem to get really, really good at it. I'm competitive but I'd still place myself under the 3rd to 2nd place IF my friends ever get together again, *sigh*.

I am also am considered "That Guy" but in a whole new light. Now I'm "that guy" who picked up the drums in Rock Band for the first time on New Years Eve and kick all out ass. Everyone was raving, which led me to believe that I was more that average at in for a first timer.

Oh, and I didn't know who Marth was either, something about Fire Emblem? But then I did the secret Codec trick with Snake and went through half the cast. I must say, *omg*, that was one of the saddest things I've ever heard. Just like the MGS3 ending, SotC or a story where the hero goes on an epic quest only to end with everyone losing memory of their achievements and they all become distant (ending in a scene where they all walk by each other, blah blah blah). Seriously, poor guy. That's why I try to play with Marth exclusively (love the Fully Charged Shield Breaker) :)

AntiZERØ

I find it absolutely hilarious that every time a new Zero Punctuation comes up, instead of people talking about how FUNNY it is (because they are) the first 50 commenters or so all talk about how perfect his review is or how he's the word of god or how much they regret buying this game. Cause Yahtzee's never said anything you would ever disagree with, right? Right? That's cattle excrement, my friends.

Fact of the matter is, Yahtzee may dislike some things about a game, but then he'll EXAGGERATE them for COMEDIC EFFECT. He's stated as such before. And he's done a good few dozen reviews by now, it is impossible that in those reviews he has not ONCE said something you disagree with. Because you are not him, you have opinions of your own, and sometimes people just don't see eye to eye, no matter how much else they agree on.

On the matter of the review, he's as hilarious as ever, but still exaggerates a few of the game's aspects to a certain extent. The campaign mode isn't as repetitive as he makes it out to be, and actually mixes things up sufficiently. It's true that the campaign mode is the easiest way to unlock characters, but you can do the same simply by playing multiplayer. Yes, the game was designed to appeal directly to fanboys, but how is that a bad thing? How many times have you seen someone play something like Gran Tourismo who didn't already have an interest in car racing, or Halo when they weren't already into shooting things? Yes, button mashing is a problem in fighting games, but it's like a basketball player who will simply push over any other player near him in an attempt to get to the ball; it's irritating, but any half-decent player will know how to get around that and still win.

However, the one thing I'm with him on is the "that guy" syndrome. It's common in most games, and half of "that guy"s will remember that it's all about having fun and won't use their l33t skills to wipe the floors with their friends mercilessly, and the other half just get their kicks out of winning and pwning n00bs. If you are "that guy" like I am, try to be like the former and not the latter. Everyone will thank you for it.

So the moral of the story? Folks, don't be such sheep that you can't formulate your own opinions. You don't have to agree with him to find Yahztee funny, especially since, odds are, he's not being completely honest with you. Remember that gaming is supposed to be for everyone's enjoyment, so if you find yourself to be "that guy" don't hold it over peoples' heads. And last but not least, don't let yourself get sucked in by the hype, because there might be the chance that you're not the intended audience.

GhostWhoWalks

@Altuenar: Jesus, you'd think Yahtzee insulted your mother! ... Wait, scratch that, he insults everyone's mother in every other review, and doesn't get so much rebuke for it.

C'mon, what he does with SSBB is no different from what he did with Halo 3, BioShock, DMC4 and other massively hyped titles, regardless of whether they deserved the hype or not (hint: they never do - no game ever does, but such is the name of the game in entertainment).

The day he starts publishing "serious" reviews with "honest" arguments is the day I'll stop watching Zero Punctuation. Yes, he sometimes blatantly ignores the qualities of games he's set out to destroy. Yes, he blows certain flaws out of proportion. But that is, by and large, how all comedy works.

Do I laugh out loud at every ZP review? No, but even at their worst, they're still damn enjoyable, and a far cry from the usual humdrum of modular VG reviews.

Antiterra

@Zaos:
Why not reinvigorate the games industry by making one yourself. A game so awesome and cool that everyone will look up to it. Even a neat fleshed out idea that is possible would be nice. Maybe that you will notice in the process that it is quite a lot harder than the idea brewing in your head.
Most of the time it is: Awesome idea -> [production] + restrictions ->watered down version everyone will try to shit on.

Now on topic:
I liked the review, as everyone else. But it doesn't end after the video stops. The reading of the comments on theescapist, kotaku and /v/ are at least the same amount of entertainment.

THIS JUST IN: NINTENDO FANBOYS ARE SECLUDED RETARDS. PEOPLE WHO HATE NINTENDO FANBOYS ARE OBVIOUSLY VERY COOL PEOPLE. FILM AT 11.

I forget - are people play Nintendo games the total nerds who never get out and see anyone else, or are the people who play Nintendo games the "non-gamers" who actually have lives and like watching soap operas and already have 2.3 kids and 1.2 spouses?

I dunno. The Guitar Hero analogy was actually insightful, that it is true to love a game and yet want to play it with your friends who don't love it as much as you do, but he barely talks about the game at all here. He just kinda whines about it. The camera can zoom out on big maps, and you have to unlock the brawlers - that was about all I got out of it involving the game's actual flaws, and if there was anything he actually kinda liked, he didn't get to it, and the whole "Who the fuck is Marth?" thing just sounded like he was digging for material.

He just wasn't funny or interesting in this one, really. He's reviewed plenty of games that he doesn't like in which he's actually entertaining (see: Uncharted: Drake's Fortune review), but it felt like he just kinda phoned this one in.

dreamshade

Eh.

I understand that the Zero Punctuation reviews aren't all that serious, but this was a disappointing review.

Not infuriating, or irritating. Just disappointing.

So you took a game you didn't want to review (both because of the popular hype and the fact that you're not much of a fighting game fan by your admission), plunked it down in front of other people who didn't have much interest in it, and put it down because it didn't change your life? Whoop de do. I don't like wrestling much, but I don't go to matches just so I can yell "You should be reading Shakespeare!" at the fans. Then you're also "that guy," who can't understand why everyone doesn't have your same interests and who obviously knows so much about the world that NEEDS to be shared, if only people would open their ears and listen! "That guy" knows the Way and the Light of Utopia, but no one cares, which makes "that guy" even more assured that he's right and the rest of us are just practicing yoga to see how far our heads will go up our anuses first thing in the morning.

Of course, I am annoyed at his continued harping on Nintendo for using their existing franchises. Konami is releasing Metal Gear Solid 4 (and doing a beta for Metal Gear Solid online) and probably working on 2 new Castlevania games, Rock Star is about to release Grand Theft Auto 4, Call of Duty 5 is in the works, we're approaching Final Fantasy XIII (and looking at a remake of Final Fantasy IV for the DS)-but only Nintendo tries to ride the coattails of its franchises, apparently, because they also make a console. We'll conveniently ignore Halo and Microsoft making out in the corner.

And then there's the Mother Three rage. I didn't know who Marth was when I played Super Smash Brothers Melee, but he was fun to play. Then this little game called "Fire Emblem" came out for the GBA. I picked it up, gave it a shot-really enjoyed it. How did that series come over here? Well, it started when people met these guys named Marth and Roy in SSBM, and got curious. Perhaps that's why there's a character from Mother Three in Brawl? No, couldn't be. Oh, and let's be honest with ourselves, Mother fans-if Mother Three does get released in the US, it will not suddenly sell 70 million copies. Don't be "that guy."

I wouldn't say Yatzhee is slipping, but this was still a disappointing review. It wasn't that funny for me, and that's before we factor in the "FANBOY SMASH!" reaction. Compared to his Condemned 2 ripping, I was left cold.

Quick, let me offer a pre-made rebuttal before I go- "Wii Fanboy!"

There, cut and paste that to save some time, so you don't get caught by your boss on Kotaku at work. Cheers!

Altuenar

Yeah, I can only really stand to play this game is with the wonderful tournament rule set. That's pretty much the only time skill really gets involved I'd have to say. 4 player free for all on Mushroomy Kingdom (or any other annoying obstacle ridden level) with items is far too random for anyone to play seriously or competently. The depth really comes out in 1v1 itemlesses on sane levels like Animal Crossing, Final Destination, Lylat Cruise etc. I really wish they'd try to expand that area of the game rather than adding more random crap that you know no one who plays this game on a daily/weekly bassus for the next 5+ years'll give a crap about. They did do some cool things to the core gameplay. Personally, while I didn't hate wavedashing, I think it's refreshing to see it leave so the game feels a bit different so we're not just playing Melee again. Overall, I really like Brawl when played the "correct" way, but absolutely hate it with default crack settings. Not to say that fun can't be had outside of the "tournament" style play, because mini supersonics with fire curry on a huge custom level is amazing.

Pickens

@Ping5000: Exactly my point. I dont see how people think Brawl is a fanservice to Nintendo fanboys. Well it is, but that's not the whole reason why people think it's awesome. If you replace the characters with totally new characters it would still be awesome.

9a3eedi

As somebody who owns Brawl, played through it and all that stuff...I completely agree. Nothing really makes me want to go back to the game, not even multiplayer, because it still feels more of the same. New characters pasted into old system with a few tweaks to physics and what moves you can do when. Even with the movesets, most of them feel stale after having used them so much in Melee already.

GyrFal
