I was mad about the Napster situation, but I understood his point of view. A week before the monitoring began, I had just downloaded a couple of Metallica albums that I already owned. At that time, it took far longer to encode my CDs in mp3 format than it did to just go to Napster and download them. I would have been mad if I had been banned, but it would have been understandable. They left me a bit pissed off for a year or two, but I got over it because I love the music. (St. Anger never happened in my world.) I understand why people still hold a grudge, but I think it is silly, and hypocritical unless they also hold a grudge against all of the other artists who stood behind them.

Personally I understand the business sense of the Napster fight, but it still soured things so badly I haven't enjoyed their music since. They are the pioneers of breaking p2p services. It also opened my eyes to Lars, and every time I'd hear the man speak I'd facepalm. The rest of them aren't really bad I'd say...

But as Radiohead and NIN showed not long ago, "you catch more flies with honey than vinegar" and if ANY band wants to give a huge exploding F.U. to their fans, regardless of justification, they're going to get the same thing back at least in the thousands.

I will say playing it is much different yet much the same as playing the guitar for real. I've played guitar for about 28 years. It's like I had to relearn how to play. I've conditioned myself to expect a guitar to act like a guitar. Unfortunately the controller even though it looks like my Strat (only it's white) is not a guitar and I can't play it the same way. It doesn't help the fact that I actually play more than a few of these songs so I subconciously find myself playing it like I do on the guitar and wonder why I keep missing notes, etc. It was kind of humbling. To say it was a bruise to my ego and a bit embarassing is an understatement.

In an interview I read, Ulrich admits he could have made a mistake handling the situation like he did. He admitted he was very ignorant about the situation. Of course, in his delightfully charming way, he validates himself by saying he was proud of what he did.

Ulrich aside, it was really the fault of the RIAA - they were far too shortsighted and far more ignorant than anyone would have thought, when it came to the reach of the internet.

Sure, songs could be cheaper, but people have gotten to accustomed to thinking they "deserve" something. Whatever happened to paying people for their work? Just because it's music doesn't mean it's not work. But look at who I'm surrounded by, a generation of kids who think that someone who slaves over a game for 2-3 years does not deserve their 60 dollars because there is jaggies. Fine if you don't like the game, or have no interest, but don't expect it for free. Same with anything else, you pay for what you aquire because that's someone's job your messing with.

Right. The downloading of the unfinished songs is what sparked it. He happen to be listening to the radio on the way to the recording session when he heard the song they were currently working on.
This is what sparked his interest in persuing it.

I followed the case and read all about it as it was happening and since then.

I understand both sides of the case.

Plus, its not like it stopped anything. There are dozens of other p2p programs out there you can get it from.
Where there's a will, there's a way around it. :)

Ulrich chose to be the squeaky wheel... an annoyingly shrill squeaky wheel at that. So he has to accept everything that comes with that role, including losing fans.

It's amusing that in his Senate hearing testimony, he mentions how important album sales are for the lesser known artist... I wonder, if he was so concerned about the average musician, how he can reconcile his support of Guitar Hero. A game that only promotes the more popular bands.

@Ashurahori: the only good metal now a days is out of europe and even then its few and far between the shitty bands...like dragonforce for instance is a terrible powermetal band but hammersfall and kamelot are freaking awesome. then you have extreme metal which is an acquired taste anyways

Once again, people bringing up the napster incident, because they don't know exactly what went down. In an interview with Lars, he himself said he had no problem with services such as Napster, his problem was with the fact that one of their songs was being distributed via Napster that hadn't even been released yet. He said "Download it, share it, burn it, whatever, but at least wait until we are done making it first".

Everyone hears a jaded version of what happened and says "oh Metallica sucks because they shut down napster". Lars just happen to the be the front runner against them. Did you stop listening to the over 150 other bands involved in the case?
