@mariospants:
I remember watching some show on PBS debunk acupuncture. Turns out they're just stabbing those needles into nerve clusters, which causes your body to release endorphines to deal with the pain (yes, pain), which in turn gives you a chemical high. In other words, you feel good afterwards, but that's about it. After that, it's all in whether you _believe_ it'll do the job or not. And a lot of that comes from the fact that people incorrectly associate events with each other. "Oh, I went to the holistic healer last week, and I feel better today, so it obviously works!" Well, if it took that long for you to kick that cold, your immune system did all the work.

The few instances where alternative medicine has proven to have any real, non-psychosomatic effect, it can usually be traced back to some odd chemical that the drug companies may or may not be able to replicate. We got aspirin from willow bark, and pennicilin from moldy cheese, but now both of them come in little plastic bottles.

Purple Dave

People who go out and eat cheeseburgers every night and think they can balance it out with eating a stick of celery gobbed in peanut butter don't know what they're doing. Eat organic. Lots of fruits and veggies. Lean meat. Eat at home more than eating out. COOK, don't be lazy and order fast-food and take-out. Sleep a lot. Drink a lot of water. Stay away from sugary and fatty foods and sodas, and replace them with healthy snacks and water or juice instead. Vitamin C is a great immune-booster, as well as garlic. Go anti-oxidant crazy. See a doctor regularly.

Studies have shown that cancer rates are indirectly proportional to dysintery rates. Blow out your bowels on a regular basis, and it appears to clean out a lot of the known carcinogens before they can have their full effect.

The human body requires balance in life. One cannot survive on too much laziness, but conversely, cannot survive being overworked.

It makes me sad that this typically puritan perception of how our lives should be lead has pervaded the cultures of countries in which puritanism has never existed. China and Japan have taken on this idea that rest, relaxation and recuperation in the capitalist world are things to be quashed - the more work you can do before you die the better.

This Puritanism may have originated in the UK, and it still exists in some grotesque form, but I'm glad to say it is nowhere near as pervasive as it is in the US, or Japan.

Having lived in Japan with my Japanese fiancée, seeing her work herself into sickness makes me realise how dangerous it is. Unfortunately however, it seems to be something you'll only ever realise as an observer and rarely as the sufferer.

Balance is key. Just remember this.

TigerDX

I stopped drinking orange juice for a few years and did not have any other major source of vitamin c coming into my body.

That was when I was in high school. I was sick a lot in the winter and during weather changes haha.

I started drinking orange juice like its my job this past year and using a humidifier for the dryer times. That and saline nasal spray has helped me a lot, I have not been sick yet once this winter/weather change this year :-)

good luck.

ImaginaryPlaces

I'm a voice major in college, so staying healthy is a requirement in order to not fail out of school. And as you can guess, getting lots of sleep in college isn't always doable.

My recommendations:
1) Trader Joe's "Chewable Oranges & C" tablets taste like candy, so you'll be getting like a zillion % of vit. C per day without having to swallow a pill.

2) Drink lots of water. This helps your body process the vitamin C, and is good for a hundred other reasons. Save soda or even sweet juices for a special occasional treat.

3) Exercise helps keep your immune system healthy, especially respiratory stuff. If you're too lazy to run, like most of us are, play DDR, and actually put it into your schedule. Whether you use a paper planner, or excel or whatever, actually schedule in exercise time so it has to happen. Doing even a half hour a day will help your body fight off bad stuff, and you'll sleep better as a bonus.

teh_sideburns

I can see why she'd be worried! I'd want to make sure it isn't some caffeine/theobromine stimulant drink in addition to the vitamins/health supplements.

...I guess no toxic levels of certain vitamins too, but if they're that close to over the top they're probably already toxic. :p

fuchikoma

Sleep, and low stress of course...
Also wash your hands a lot. Like, not obsessively, but be aware when you've touched something dirty. Be aware WHAT is dirty. I work in IT - mice, keyboards, and phone receivers are some of the worst breeding grounds for bacteria; toilet seats are pretty tame in comparison. These things seldom get cleaned, and collect skin flakes and oils. Gross, I know, but... "The more you know~" Personally I don't clean mine obsessively, but sometimes shut it down and wipe the surface with 99% rubbing alcohol. When using them, I try to avoid rubbing my eyes or scraching my face/stroking my beard/moustache etc without washing first. I bet you 10 to 1 game controllers are at least as bad as mice.

fuchikoma

Zicam is the shit. I have two small kids and they are germ factories. Every time I start to feel a cold coming on I get some of these puppies and use it until the symptoms go away. If I start using it when I'm first starting to feel sick it usually keeps me from getting ill. If I am already sick it shortens the recovery time.

I don't just use each swab once. I can usually get two or three applications out of each one. Just stuff the swab back in there and it keeps it from drying out.

Slothboy

Taking too much Vitamin C can lead to indegestioin, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, flushing of the face, headache, fatigue and disturbed sleep. In other words it can make you sicker. With regards to the common cold Vitamin C is fairly ineffectual and, as I have stated, can cause serious problems if taken improperly. It has been suggested that you talk to a doctor if you take more than 1000 mg a day (that's roughly 11 times the RDA).

Agies

Last time I started to see spots I promptly passed out- well, maybe pass out isn't the correct word, more like "body ceased to function in a way which was acceptable," though luckily I still had bowel control. The rest of the body wasn't too keen on responding to electrical impulses sent by my brain though. You ever try to go to the bathroom when you have to climb down a set of loft-stairs when you can't move your legs? I haven't either. I just waited it out.

So, um- drink miso, it can be made really easily and it's great for that kinda crap. Take a hot shower and then lie down so you can cough up all the crap in your system. Increase caloric intake and get fresh air.

denki
