home has to come out swinging, and thats why they are really pushing to make sure Home is READY before releasing it.

...thats in fact why when they first release it its being called an open-beta... to make sure people realize its a work in progress.

The 360 would have a huge lead time to gain even more market share if Sony had waited this long and BD would not have won the HD format war w/out the PS3 being out. There would have been expensive incomplete Bluray players(the first besides the PS3 to actually have an internet connection still hasn't hit the market) and the competition of the 360 HD-DVD addon drive. The addon sold very well for a console peripheral but couldn't compete w/a console. It certainly could have competed if it weren't for the PS3.

In short no, Sony absolutely needed to release the PS3 before now or they would have lost more of videogame market and very likely the HD format war.

Yes, you were all excited about the gazillion features they thought of and promised for Home, just like you were all excited about the graphics they showed in the E3 2005 Killzone 2 trailer and pretty much every time they claim pre-rendered scenes are PS3 in-game graphics, or back when they claimed the PS2 would have photorealistic graphics...

They lie; it's just that simple. They don't do it any more or less than the others, but they do. Stop being excited about features they are unlikely to ever bring out; buy your consoles on what they actually DO, not what a wishful marketdroid thought up 5 minutes before a keynote to try and one-up the competition.

And this is not only directed towards Sony; why doesn't Microsoft have anything new to show about Live Anywhere? And the Zune/Live integration? And the video marketplace in Canada (yes, it's there but the content is ridiculous)?

Really ingame XMB is not new its not a bonus feature that is being added cause of demand, it was supposed to be there the whole time. There is video of a Sony game Untold Legends Dark Kingdon I believe via IGN that predates the launch of the console and it had in game XMB and the hinted other times that was going to be the case.

The problem now and why I suspect they are having issues is that it takes resources to run the XMB process cycles memory etc. The 360 planned for their blade system from the start and reserved a thread of one core and some memory for this purpose so all developers have to respect that space and work with the understanding that those resources will be used and they can't touch them. With the PS3 it does seem that has been done and not sure it can be done quite the same as the PS3 only has one PPU and I am not sure a SPU could handle this process well. But there really is no excuse it could have been done via software, Sony could have said here is the plug in for XMB Developers please use it in your game. Retroactively implementing XMB for text messages and in game friends list I wouldn't think would take too much resources but voice and say play list support I suspect is another issues all together. But to me it seems the longer they wait the harder it may be to implement and the more games that may possibly have issues running with it(Sony to a Developer "yeah we need to to patch your game for XMB support" Developer "Whats in it for us that games has already lived out its cycle we aren't making anymore" Gamer who bout the game used for 10 bucks "man XMB on this sucks but I really want to play it".

No one is really holding out on purchasing a PS3 for Home. It's exciting to some of us, but the majority of people out there have so many reasons to own a PS3, this is just icing on the cake when it's ready for consumption.

On another note, I know a guy in the closed Home beta. He says it is definitely not ready for the public. So, this delay is probably a good thing.

Keeping franchise collection on one line of platforms (not sure how that makes it a better game)
No dice roll (red ring of death) every time you play ( now that is just a cheap shot )
No disc drive noise (another cheap shot)
HDD caching ( only helps get the load time to the same as the 360 )
Superior lighting and textures ( no real proof of that )
No slowdown (remains to be seen)

I mean, how can you push a feature back a whole year? This is something they stated they had the idea back with the PS3. Now here they are, the PS3 is finally taking strides to be a serious console, and they pull crap like this?

I was certain for once with the Warhawk Home integration add-on in 1.3, that things were finally going to be smooth. Now I see the Warhawk crew wasted their time when they could have postponed working on that feature for another 8 months. Just makes me sad :(

Sony has promised the moon with the PS3 but console and software delays make me wonder if any of Sonys various divisions actually talk to one another. Delays are nothing new to the gaming industry, and the frequency of them has conditioned many gamers to accept them as normal. What if the NFL announced it's schedule for next season tomorrow and then delayed those games months later? People would shit. Same with Hollywood; if the big blockbusters kept on getting their release dates pushed back time after time, most people would lose interest and see something else. No other major entertainment industry hypes it products like the gaming industry. Sony told us last July that we would have Home by the fall of 2007. At TGS it was delayed to Spring 2008, and now that spring has sprung we get a Fall 2008 for the open beta. That means we won't be seeing Home until 2009. Reminds me of the PS3 release that got delayed after release date were announced with much fanfare, and then Europe got delayed despite the PS3 being on sale in Japan and N America.

What this represents to me and many others is a failure on some level to get the product out on time. I have an XBox as well. I know how good Live is. Time is EVERYTHING here. The more they delay, the more they will lose.

My big thing isn't so much that the "game" part of Home is delayed. I mean, that sucks, yes, as they've been hyping it up as "Coming sooner than you think!"

But what bothers me is basic network and messaging features like in game XMB, in game messaging, cross game messaging and chat... Things that should have been ready out the frigging door to compete with XBL, still have yet to be realized because they are either waiting to release it with Home or because they are too busy with Home that they haven't got around to it.

Like someone else mentioned: You hype something up, and continually delay it, people stop caring (Haze). Delay it enough times, you end up a joke (Diakatana, Duke Nukem Forever).

I fear that with this announcement, they have moved into the "Don't care" department, and with the amount of hype they pushed on it, they may have set it on an accelerated path to joke status.

And though all of this, they are holding back on releasing basic online features that will put them on par with MS, thus letting the house that Windows built sit back and laugh at their ineptitude.

What is the point of complaining about a service, mind you it's optional to use, that does not stop anybody from playing online just because it's not develop yet. Some of these people saying that they are just waiting for Home to be release to buy a PS3 are just the same people who will not buy one in the first place. You guys are stressing out over nothing. The problem for Sony is the hype train is going to lose a lot of steam from this. Maybe by letting a large number of new testers in they can keep the talk about it going. At the very least letting a new group in will give you the standard "It needed to be pushed back" reinforcing statements, and the "It will be worth it, Home is going to blow people away" statements.

So now, despite games releasing patches to integrate Home (warhawk), PS3 users awake to learn we have been totally jerked around by Sony and had our expectations (that we got straight from Sony) shattered, AGAIN.

This means the open beta probably won't come until October. That means SIX MORE MONTHS of no Home-integrated games, six more months of no achievement system, six more months of no sort of online community, and six more months to wait for a product that has been promised and denied no less than 3 times.

I'm sure Kaz is really concerned about making this perfect, but in light of the fact that Sony has hyped up the release timeline only to delay it, has failed to release in-game xmb, and refuses to share release dates of PSN games...it all adds up to a real sense of maltreatment among many of their customers who, like me, feel totally out in the dark.

I have a suspicion this delay is more about boosting fall holiday sales by including Home with juggernaut game releases rather than a necessity to make improvements to the product. They must want all that press coverage in the fall rather than summer to compete against the Wii. Otherwise, why would the last 6 month delay not have been enough time to implement the changes Kaz wanted? Arggg.

The time this has taken and what do we have to show, outside of continually slipping release dates? It seems like everything on PS3 has been a waiting game. People can't tolerate infinite delays and there is no sort of greatness that will ever be able to match the hype. Nothing can justify these delays. I don't care how many hair styles there are.

There are important features we don't have yet. We haven't had even a taste of Home. Closed beta landing a year after the product should have been here? I'm not seeing where the optimism's coming from.

Everyone should understand the longer you wait, the more (hopefully) content (in which i mean things to decorate, see, play and etc) will be created. It will also establish a good impression on everyone.

This is a massive environment where we can all play right? So MMOish in a sense, and development for MMO's for those who do not know take a long time, not because of content but more because of user-stress tests. Content will not be in the form of a typical MMO so you can't blame it on that.

What my point is, don't hate on delays, it inevitably gives us (the user) a more polished and refined experience without all the launch hassle. And when launch comes, and you do not experience the extra polish or content, then we have a right to complain.

I remember Gran Turismo 4 being pushed back for more than a year, and ending up being very good and very succesful.

Looking back at the 360 and al of its hardware problems, everyone has to see that staying at the drawing table a little while longer is not a bad thing.

Al these negative shit is just Xbox 360 users that are afraid Home 'could' (and I use the word could, because nobody knows exactly how good or bad it is going to be) become the weapon Sony needs to get ahead of Xbox Live.

The 'hype' surrounding the service is kind of ridiculous, though. It's not the second coming of Christ or a Live killer. It's a free platform for the PlayStation community. The comparisons to Second Life aren't too far removed, but it's not as demeaning or trivial as it suggests.
