They're designed as home entertainment hubs, and that's what these download services are about, along with the future TV content (PlayTV for the PS3, with the 360 getting BT Vision).

The likely thing to happen in the future is that more film companies will have their films featured on the download store, but obviously Sony films are being used at the start since PlayStation's access to them (as guinea pigs, if you will) is relatively easy.

Seriously, people, I really wish we all could get off our fanboy horses and realize the inherent DANGER of having a company like Sony or Microsoft or Nintendo CONTROLING so many different sectors of entertainment. How far away are we from Sony movies only playing on Sony players and on Sony TV's? Or Sony Music only playing on Sony digital players and with Sony headsets?

Gaming consoles should not have exclusive MOVIE content, be it the 360 or the PS3. Games? Yes, fine, whatever. Movies? No. Its going to far at that point.

Some of us use torrent sites to get things we have already legitimately paid for. I pay for full cable but miss alot of shows i love due to work. Its easier to download them from torrent sites than screw around with a vcr.

Whether they sell it on a download or BDR does it really matter as long as "they" are getting a cut. They certainly aren't fighting a format war on that front anymore.

An attractive media service could push a lot more people over to the PS3 than the 360. I guess the question is, is Sony going to aggressively push such a service or is it just adding to a feature list?

On top of the free service you can also offer a regular subscription, rental or buy store for more recent and perhaps HD content.

I think it'll be a lot like Amazon Unbox. With unbox, there's the ability to take your rental portable to an MP3 player, or TIVO. You can also purchase the movie.

With Sony's service you can rent a video and watch it either on your TV, on your PSP, or on your computer.

I used it with Amazon a couple times and it just kinda sucked, as they put strict time limit on when you can watch something.
