It's amazing how many useless dipshit responses there are in every freaking comments section on here.

If you people spent as much time learning about the limitations of different storage methods as you do trying far too hard to be funny by insulting projects that are beyond your capabilities, you'd be more than the useless husks of bone and (very little) muscle that you currently are.

To the modder, that's pretty much about as sexy as you're going to get with a 3.5" external housing for the PS3, regardless of how you want to orient the unit with, so I wouldn't listen to the functionally retarded masses that just like to put everything down. Good job.

Wow, the level of complete asshattery in this thread reminds me of why I comment here less and less every day. Sometimes I start wondering if Joystiq switched to a green and pink scheme and has been fooling me...

As for the mod, it's a really good effort, the casing looks well done, and I completely understand the reasoning behind it (I actually started planning a base to hold 3.5" drive and the PS3 would stand vertically on it, but then I got a half price 2.5" 120GB...)

I have a few suggestions:
A) It looks like you need external power, so get a little barrel adapter for the power, the type that the wall blisters plug into
B) Get some flexible black plastic wire wrap, it's easy to find at an auto supply store.
C) carefully cut two holes in the original ps3 drive bay cover, one for the data and power to go out, and one to mount the barrel adapter in. Just hook the molex from the hard drive to the barrel adapter inside the ps3 drive bay.

This will give the whole thing a nice polished look. Though I doubt it will shutup the philistines.

Rather than this hack (he seem to be running a cable inside his PS3) why not simply buy the HDXT esata adapter? It slots into the 2.5 inch drive bay and provides an esata port on the side of the PS3 that can then be used with any compatible drive enclosure.

Any USB root hub like the PS3's ports ought to supply 500mA of power, which is the maximum any USB device I've seen would draw. Definitely no more than 1A.

That is one horrible looking mod. The good part is that he at least tried to make it look like it's part of the actual console, but the execution is...well, unique.
Lessons learned from this are that you should save money for a 320gb smaller drive to swap for the original, or make the 3.5 inch version an external cool looking additional box next to the console. Otherwise you'll end up with internet fame that is not positive.

I think that if it were a little more streamlined, it'd be better received.

That said, I usually look at projects as how they are executed versus my opinion on their style. So... good work.

I have a 320GB external hard drive for all my media, and it's great in some ways, and bad in others. The inability to make music playlists from it, loading movies, etc...

So, whatever, I'd not feel the heat from the comments. If it works for you, who gives a piss what a bunch of folks on the 'net think?

I don't think a lot of people get it-

You can't use a USB hard drive as your primary.

You get a lot more space per dollar using 3.5" and currently, you don't have many options for making a 3.5" HDD as your primary look pretty, besides Team Xecutioners(right?) PS3 HDD extender.

Nice mod dude, props. Don't listen to these butt heads that are bashing on it for no reason. Nice craftmanships and good idea.

The HD I have connected to my PS3 doesn't work in my car because the device draws more power than USB2.0 specs. gotta love it :(

If you are running a 3.5" drive in an enclosure you more than likely will need external power, even some 2.5's take too much power :( it's a shame.

@fuchikoma: Was your drive formatted correctly? The PS3 won't recognize a NTFS formatted drive. FAT16/32 should do the trick.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure most flash drives are formatted as FAT16/32 out of the box.

I've only used my 60gb WD Passport drive on my PS3 via USB.

I'm the guy who made this and while I do agree that it... stands out a little, you've got to admit that at least I got the style right.

I should probably justify why I actually did this. 3.5" HDDs are a shitload cheaper than 2.5" ones, infact the 500GB one in there only cost me £60; I was running out of space on my 60GB one; I didn't want to use an external disk because you can't put games/demos/updates etc on there and probably most importantly, I needed something to do for my technology project in school.

Also, it's not actually attached to the PS3, it just rests on top.

Let's see, you can get a maximum of 320GB in a 2.5" form factor that fits INSIDE the console, or you can bolt on this hunk of pure fucking fail and get an extra 180GB for a total of 500.

With the mentioned swap out of the HDD, 160 GB of space is still far more than plentiful for my needs. I used to connect an external 500 GB HDD via USB, but that didn't allow me to download in the background, which turned out to be useless. For this design, I don't dig it at all with the extra pounds its packing on.
