@quaver: That's interesting. I remember seeing some fliers in Japan that said you should turn off your gas and open your front door if you're in the middle of an earthquake. I could have misread that though... (^-^;)

I've got a funny earthquake story, too! Ready?

In 1994 I was living in Los Angeles. The Northridge Earthquake struck. A friend of mine had his house completely destroyed! Fortunately he was out of town at the time. Another friend of mine had his vintage '65 Mustang SE smashed by a falling telephone poll! My own house suffered about $10,000 worth of foundation damage.

I think Witzbold can attest to this, but if you live in Tokyo, you're going to feel earthquakes. All the time. The last time I was in Tokyo I experienced no less than 5 quakes over a 4 week period. They were all very small, and occurred at night or in the early morning, but they happen constantly. Japan is right smack on the Ring of Fire, after all.

My wife and I lived in California at the time. She had just gotten an electric toothbrush for us and I was using it for the first time. I see my face in the mirror and I turn it on and my head really starts shaking in the reflection. I think, "Man this thing is awesome powerful!"

But then I hear my wife scream and I look over and see her laying on the bed clutching at the sheets and vibrating all around. Then I notice the computer speakers fall over and the keyboard start moving across the desk. It finally dawns on me it isn't the stupid toothbrush as I hear some things fall in the kitchen and watch books tumble on the shelves.

But then right at that moment as suddenly as it started, the earthquake stopped when I turned-off the toothbrush. I joked that it was, "My fault, sorry Honey, won't do that again."

Another time I freaked my kids (3, 5, and 7 year olds) in St. Louis. There was an "earthquake" button in the elevator. I told them what ever you do, don't push that button on accident. But what the in the world is an earthquake button doing in an elevator in St. Louis Missouri? What does it even do?

It was a nerve-racking experience. For the next two weeks, my wife and I would feel little aftershocks…which made us really jumpy. I began to wonder if most of the aftershocks were just figments of my imagination.
Well, no one was hurt, and it could have been worse…

All the pipes could have burst in the bathroom like in that scene from "The Goonies". :)

yes! I know! We live on the San Andreas fault! I can assume that Earthquakes of a large magnitude will happen numerous times within a thirty year period!

@Witzbold: You dont have much to worry if the construction code if well applied, aftet the big earthquake of 1985 in mexico almost all building that where build after that where build with more strengh and that why each time mexico city feels a 7.5 earthquake nothing dangeroues fell appart...

As for feeling earthquakes, I apparently was in two minor quakes on both occasions I was in Tokyo.
Didn't feel it both times though my friends did.
No idea why.

I've seen a volcano erupt before, Mount Arenal in Costa Rica. It's breathtaking to watch, you can feel the danger, but it's beautiful to watch at the same time. Thankfully, Arenal is a fairly tame volcano, and I was lucky enough to see a fair sized eruption with no clouds obscuring it.

Also, earthquakes are just shaking of the ground, almost like those inflatable bouncy things you might have played in as a child at a party or festival. Just, not as bouncy for most quakes.
