Nintendo have issues. I am glad to finally find people who are annoyed as I am with the frequency they keep 'changing' their gameboy models. To me, it seems that for the past few years, Nintendo has used deception to stay ahead of the market, by bring out something shiny and new every couple of years. I say deception, because they make out like every current model is the 'end of line' product when in fact they have 4 other waiting to pop out of the oven.

It has cost them though, the Gameboy micro didn't do to well and interestingly enough they are SURPRISED at this, squashed between the release of the Gameboy Advance SP Mark 2 and the release of the Original DS, they are actually 'disappointed' that they didn't sell as well as they could have done, or shown consumers their real potential.

What they mean to say is that they are sorry they couldn't fleece us for more money, because their factories coughed out another pretty looking gem.

They don't seem to capitilise on a model before moving on to the next, it reminds me of a kid getting bored leaving toys on the floor and pulling something else out the toy box.

They can release another DS I won't bust any sweat to buy this one.

@stop2: Absolutely! It probably has a totally different name that marks it out a a clearly separate product and nothing remotely like Hamamura was suggesting! For example, 'DS2' say.

@Foxstar Sixtail: Sure but it's about time for one (not right now but before too long) - not necessarily a really new system, just another upgrade. My guess would be DS Lite + 1GB flash memory and new firmware to allow paid game downloads. (What I'd *like* to see: that plus extra RAM and a graphics processor that lets it do better 3D graphics, not sure that is feasible on the same battery consumption but I doubt it will happen anyway yet.)

It's true. The DS Lite has the worst d-pad I have ever used. I can only play Jam Sessions on the original DS because diagonals are so hard to hit on the Lite. A subtle redesign could be in order.

@eastx: The GBA port isn't only used for backwards compatibility, though. Several DS games use it for expansions or peripherals. Nintendo themselves sell various things like rumble packs and the DS browser which won't work without the GBA slot.

Also the BC makes Nintendo millions and millions of dollars. They shan't be getting rid of that slot. That's for sure.

If a new DS model came out, it'd have the same size screens and the same graphical ability. I would like it if the screens were closer together, and if the buttons were more comfortable. Also they could fix the hinge problems that the DS Lite has.

These are all such small flaws with the design that I can't imagine them releasing a new revision of the hardware just to address these issues.

Even if Nintendo really is planning a new handheld, can you really blame them for trying to keep it under the table until they're really ready to talk about it? Maybe people have forgotten about it in the spoiler-filled internet age, but companies releasing a new product do tend to want to unveil it on their terms and not based around people leaking information and then reporters coming to them to ask about it.

Speculate all you like, just don't harass them. That's just being a dick.

@edb87: No, get a DS. They may drop in price but the DS lite is here to stay until its successor is launched sometime in the next three years. If it were true Nintendo would only respond with a "we can't comment of speculation and rumor" that always comes out when some secret has been stepped on. I can't recall any of the big companies saying out right that something is not so and then seeing it happen. They tend to be pretty good about that at least.

@NeoAkira: Bigger screens are a BAD IDEA. I think it'd break the DS if that happened. Why? The touch screen. If you scale the image, you're going to have to scale the touch screen without breaking the link to the images below it, or interfering with the intended sensitivity and response. That'd be difficult as best, assuming it's even possible and the touch screen parameters aren't hard-coded into games because developers assumed that they wouldn't have to worry about baloney like this. I will admit that I'm far from an expert on the DS hardware, but everything I know about programming and interfaces makes me think that scaling the touch screen would end disastrously. And just in case it gets brought up: yes, you could theoretically scale just the top screen upwards, but that'd create a visual discontinuity that would ruin games like Contra that rely on both screens as two halves to make one large whole. Bottom line: bigger screens are theoretically possible, but they'd be a huge MESS to implement, unless Nntendo's got a card up their sleeve I'm not anticipating. If so...well, I'd love to be proven wrong come E3, but we'll see what happens.

In all seriousness, I call it a revision only because what Nintendo did with he GameBoy series of hand-helds; there was at least 4 or 5 revisions with each gaining a feature that made games for it unplayable on its predecessors. Nintendo has a history hear that the consumer doesn't seem to mind.

We can never trust the "clearly denying" of present days... but I also don't think there will be a new version of the DS.

It might've even been a good move from Nintendo, specially after the recent PSP explosion in sales.

But I fail to see how a new DS version would be so incredibly better, unless they messed with the hardware.

And messing with the hardware would generate compatibility problems and other stuff... so it's better to release a DS2 rather than a revamped DS...

Also, why would Nintendo spend more money on a portable that is still making unbelievably XBOX HUEG lines to sell for almost triple the price only because it is a version with some stickers on it? -> [kotaku.com]

Me too, the DS Lite D-Pad is too squishy. But the screen is so much better. The colors on the Phat are too washed out. But I still haven't dropped $130 on a Lite.

But this "news" just reminds me of when I read the Reggie interview in EGM about how Nintendo wasn't even thinking of a DS redesign, then two days after I bought that issue, the DS Lite gets announced.

And it would make perfect sense to redesign it now, too. The PSP Slim is catching momentum.

Wouldn't adding joystiqs, ram, processing power, and widescreen more so constitute a Nintendo DS 2 as opposed to a Nintendo DS 1 revision? While those things would be nice in a DS 1 revision they would cause DS games that utilized them to be unplayable on previous sold DS systems.

Changes like brighter screens, smaller form factors, and changes to button placement don't actually change what the system can do from a technical perspective, and thus can be done without releasing a new handheld system such as a DS 2. Of course, if you were just saying you would want to see a DS 2 instead of a DS 1 revision ignore me as I misunderstood your posts.

@thinkfreemind: Some people have said that, but if you the GBA slot, there's a few million DS and DS Lite consoles that provide it. So slot-needing gamers can hold on to their existing DS Lites, while people who desire a slimmer system can get the new one.

Well I agree that there's no point in releasing a new DS right now since the current DS is still selling extremely well, but there is a lot of room for improvement on the current design.

for starters: Bigger buttons, a longer stylus, better speakers, maybe a joystick, larger screens.

I'd also like to note that a little boost in graphical power would be cool, but it's not necessary.

The area that the DS needs to improve most is the gap between the two screens. Making it even slimmer would probably be at the top of the list also. However, I think Nintendo would end up ditching the GBA slot to make this happen, at which point it might upset people who would still want that feature.

@GREY GECKO: Well you figure what ever it is, it's going to be a variation on the dual screen design. There's still much to improve about the DS.. the performance and resource limits being a prime candidate for improvement. Wide screen... better sound, more RAM... the possibilities are endless. motion control would be a foolish idea on a portable in my opinion so I wouldn't even consider it.

Doesn't really seem necessary right now.

The GBA SP was very clearly meant to be a proper model as opposed to that inscrutably dark screened original. A definite fix of a shitty design flaw.

The GBA Micro was basically a novelty that sold well, but relatively briefly.

The DS Lite was an obvious improvement on the overall aesthetic, which many saw as unattractive. But the original was still perfectly functional.

I just don't see any reason for a new DS model right now. I just haven't heard any demand for an improvement.

I call truthiness on this one from Nintendo. Which is actually rare by my count.

I think Nintendo mistook "clearly denies" for "we don't comment on rumors or speculation". I think a new DS is as likely as Microsoft's version of the Wii Remote. After all, the PSP is outselling the DS in Japan, and I bet demon Iwata won't continue to stand for that.

Quite right, we can't ignore precedent.

Though I can't even imagine what Nintendo could possibly do to make the DS cooler...and if they were to do just that, then, well I'd have a whole new handheld to purchase!

I love my DS Lite as it is, and I feel as though it's unnecessary at the moment to release a new handheld...But that's just my two cents...
