I'm still a fan of Vader being in the game, but I'm not a fan of special editions. DLC I'm cool with, but $80 is seriously a stupid price if you ask me.

ok so heres my rant to you SW and SC nerds,

give it up. stop comparing fictional rules, when in fiction there are no fucking rules. My most educated guess is that most of you (not all) are not aware of what a crossover is. these things have happened in comic books for years, and now videogame companies are starting to see the potential for these things. Ex: SSBB. (nuffsaid).

secondly,
in SC they slash at each other at will, yet no one bleeds or scars, should that be a concern? and most of the fighters in SC are all fictional characters that would never exist in real life. is that a problem?

thirdly,
this is coming from a franchise who had Link,Heihachi,and Spawn, who clearly dont belong in the universe by SC standards, but they do......why?

because this is all about selling games and fan service. George Lucas was like like "what? you want to put my precious Vader and Yoda in the most revered weapons based fighting game? all to help you promote your games and keep Star Wars on the radar? sign me up!"

please folks stop acting like a bunch of old farts and start usig the same damn imagination that got you into videogames in the first place.

@djgil: Yea. I remember. But PSX (PS1) games were $40 new, sometimes on sale for less on launch week. Compared to the $60 cart for the N64 games, it is one of the reasons they won that round.

In the gen after, many games were $50, but at least one retail chain would launch it on sale for $40.

And this is before Ads were in games at all.

Combine that with the fact that Namco likes to charge $5 dollars for planes, $ for maps already on the disc (Katamari), and a ton for the Idol game add-ons, I expect SC4 to be guilty of this as well (on top of the price of the collector's edition).

personally i'm a little miffed by the 80 dollar collectors editions things, but i'll still end up getting it anyways because im a CONSUMER WHORE. but yeah >.>.

as far as current gen games being 60 bucks, where were you when super nintendo games were around? some of those were as high as 75, and that was all that time ago when 75 bucks ment more than it does today. its a continuous cycle. eventually games will probably be back down to 50 bucks.

i would rather they allow the cross platform characters to be downloadable on the other console (so yoda DLC on ps3 and vader DLC on 360) than not having them at all, cause i dont have a 360 but i would like to be able to play as yoda. unless he plays the same as vader and its basically just a skin change, though from what gameplay video i've seen that's not the case at all.

in any case im looking forward to this game and the many many hours of vs matches my friends and i will all be playing hehe.

Hell, Episodes I-III broke canon but you didn't see anybody boycott the movie theaters. I, too, like to think of Vader as some aloof, impossibly powerful evil entity but I don't run the franchise. When Episode III came out, a local free rag (Ottawa Express) had a great article on the movie with a full-cover image of Vader's helmet and the words "Back in Black". That issue disappeared from newsboxes by noon.

I love how - 30 years later, even with all of the creative genius and genre-busting cross-cultural influences we see today - there still isn't a single villain that makes an entrance like Darth Vader.

I can't say much as a fan since I was only kind of into Soul Calibur 1 for a few months for reasons that would be sure to draw flames, but...

Could it be that people are upset about THESE cameos as opposed to say, Gon in Tekken 3, because Star Wars has kind of become the poster child for cherished classics being flagrantly cut, added to, tweaked, altered, and then forced on us with no choice? I mean, are the original originals out on DVD yet? I stopped paying attention - there was the remastered set, the remastered set with special FX, the "Han shot first" controversy, I don't know how many others because I started ignoring them after enough alterations, but I remember YEARS of fans on the net clamoring for just the original, unedited trilogy on DVD, and it was always refused - they even pulled the rights to show it on TV (I think?)

So maybe people are less genuinely upset with SC's canon being disrupted, and more automatically incensed by having mascots plugged in from another (bigger, overshadowing) franchise that practically represents disregarding canon in a classic? Maybe they just feel that with Star Wars characters added, SC couldn't possibly remain true to the series, whatever that might entail...

I'm not really upset about either series, but here's some fodder for discussion...

The novelty of "collector's edition" releases is really wearing off at this point in time. I must say though, it's tempting for a big Soul Calibur fan like Fut here. Looks like there might finally be a Special Edition version of a game that's worth shelling out the extra bucks for; I'm guessing the "tournament kit" will involve some way to record matches, which I can live without, but I'm curious as to what the extra customization content will be. Extra costumes and custom character parts, perhaps?

I do have to say, however, that the article headline was rather misleading; I saw it and thought Namco was going to dump all of the backstory completely out the window, which wouldn't have been cool. Bonus secret characters and things like that is not "disregarding canon"; it's just the game's developers having some fun. Isn't that the idea, to have some fun? Chill out about it already.

Does anyone actually pay that much for a game? $80?!? It's total insanity. If you want a little plastic toy or a some PR material, write to a studio and have it sent your way. A lot cheaper than shelling out close to a hundred bucks for a game that shoehorned Yoda and Vader into the publisher itself has lost faith in the franchise without gimmicks. Too bad, to -- Soul Calibur for the Dreamcast is one of the best fighters ever made.

Someone needs to start legislation against these collector's edition things. Just wait:

Games don't deserve these things just because its a sequel. Assassin's Creed, the figure was the best thing about buying the game, Bishock, barring the broken ones, was awesome. Halo, waste, GTAIV, give me a freaking break, SC4? No sale.

I’ll probably pass on shelling out $80 for the premium edition, but I’ll still be getting this game at launch for the PS3. I can’t wait to play as my old favorites; Mitsurugi, Cassandra and Zasalamel. I am curious as to who’s penning the comic for the premium edition. Could it be Takuji Kawano? or Mine Yoshizaki? As an illustrator, I’d love to see what talent they have behind that.

On another note, who really cares about canon in a fighting game? Since when have these types of games been known for their narrative? I've played every SC and I still have no idea what's going on. Something about an evil sword and a good sword, eternally pissing in each other's coffee.

Well, there's one more game I can cross off my list.

I refuse to pay $20 extra for a better version, and I'm not going to buy the regular version if I miss out on actually in-game content by doing so.

My budget is extremely tight this year, and even though I only want a small handful of games, I'll be lucky if I can afford half of them. Bullshit like this makes the elimination process a lot easier.
